Hi!! I recently had a successful endometriosis excision laparoscopic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and wanted to share here for anyone seeking surgeons/treatment.
Background: 29yo, stage 4 endo with frequent endometriomas (cysts on ovaries), bowel endo and upper abdominal endo noted. Two surgeries completed.
I was diagnosed in 2021 and underwent surgery where I lost an ovary and barely any of my endo was removed. After 2 years, my symptoms began to worsen again and I decided to seek out an expert in the field. After extensive research and consulting with many different surgeons and clinics, I finally decided on the gynecology speciality unit at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. I live out of state but it was still covered under my insurance and I was able to meet with a surgeon via Zoom so I only had to travel in for a week for my MRI, surgery and recovery.
I cannot say enough positive things about the Mayo Clinic! Every single human I interacted with was kind, caring, professional and organized. The clinic was a model for how healthcare should be run. Scheduling was a breeze, although I did have to wait 2 months for my consult appointment and then 3 months for my surgery due to high demand. The care and treatment I received was unlike anything else I have ever experienced before. While this was an extremely intense procedure, I feel better than I ever have post surgery and all my needs have been met thanks to the incredible surgeons, doctors and nurses who cared for me.
My surgeon, Dr. Megan Wasson, was absolutely incredible. She was so kind and knowledgeable. She spent time with me before my surgery to make sure all of my questions were answered and that we had a plan in place that worked for me. I never felt rushed by her or pressured to make any decision. She performs robotically assisted surgery and her research and expertise in the field is well documented. She was able to remove all of my endometriosis growth, which was extensive and covering many vital organs throughout my entire abdomen in the surgery, and save my ovary from a large cyst growing on it.
I felt so confident and comfortable throughout the entire process, the communication was on point and I always felt informed and safe. I am so grateful to have finally received the care I need and deserve after nearly 20 long years of suffering with this illness.
TLDR; The Mayo Clinic in Arizona is top notch, highly recommend. Dr. Megan Wasson is an excellent surgeon and worth any wait. Don't ever give up on yourself, fight for the care that you deserve. It's hard to find but it's out there.

Hi!!
I just called the Mayo Clinic gynecology department main line and said I was seeking surgery for my endo. They got me set up with a consultation appointment over video. Dr. Wasson was their only surgeon that was licensed in my state (Nevada), so she was able to see me via telehealth. I already had a confirmed diagnosis, prior surgery images and ultrasound imaging ready to go which probably made things easier. After our consultation, she agreed surgery was the next step and we got it scheduled.
Wishing you the best of luck! Xx
Hi there! I also have a history of endometriomas and I lost one ovary during my first surgery. Keeping my remaining ovary was my #1 goal and Dr. Wasson shared that goal with me. She told me during our consult appointment that she’s in the business of saving ovaries and she was able to save mine. She regularly operates on very large and complex endometriomas and is able to preserve ovary function. Be sure to talk about this with Dr. Wasson. She provided me a lot of comfort and built trust with me that allowed me to go into my surgery feeling fully confident I’d come out with my ovary intact.
Wishing you the best of luck!! xx
Hi there! I’m sorry you need surgery, it’s never easy but it is the best treatment on the table at the time and the Mayo Clinic is one of the best places to be.
My out of state status may have pushed things back slightly since I had to have my MRI and surgery scheduled in a quick time frame. But ultimately I was scheduled several months out because that is just how busy Dr. Wasson is.
Post surgery, I’m seeing a major reduction in symptoms and I feel it was absolutely worth it to wait for Dr. Wasson. I had one prior surgery with a less experienced doctor and my outcomes were nowhere near as good and I actually ended up losing an ovary in that first surgery. I know it’s so hard to imagine living with your symptoms waiting around for a surgery, but in my experience I would wait for the right surgeon every single time. I’ll never get my ovary back and the months I had to wait for surgery were absolutely worth being able to keep my other one.
I hope that helps. Wishing you the best of luck xx
Hi there, I’m happy to answer any questions you have!
Dr. Wasson prescribed me gabapentin for the day of my surgery, as well as another pain management drug. I was prescribed an opioid for post surgery pain management. I felt that pain management was a main priority of the whole staff through my entire surgery experience.
I am anti Orilissa and I don’t remember it ever coming up with Dr. Wasson. My impression of her is that she is open to whatever is going to work best for your specific case. For example, she recommended I go on a dose of birth control to help slow the growth of my endometriomas but I decided not to as it gives me terrible side effects. Dr. Wasson was supportive of me making the best decision for myself.
Wishing you the best of luck xx
Hi!! I’m 5 months post surgery and seeing major reduction in symptoms. Obviously, surgery is not a cure all and I still get some mild symptoms especially during times of stress or certain phases of my cycle. But overall, a huge improvement in my daily pain.
I’m not 100% confident but I believe that Dr. Wasson excised scar tissue during my surgery because I had some from my 1st surgery. She was able to clean up some of the mistakes made in that first surgery, so to speak. I do not know about pelvic nerves but Dr. Wasson is on the forefront of new developments in endo surgery so I would certainly get a consult appointment and ask that!
Wishing you the best xx
Hi! I called the main scheduler and explained my situation and I was set up with a virtual appointment with Dr. Wasson because she was the only surgeon with a license in my state (Nevada) so she was the only one who could legally take an appointment with me. I already had my diagnosis established and a prior surgery which probably sped things along.
Unfortunately, the only way to truly be diagnosed is with surgery. Don’t be afraid to ask for the doctor you feel most comfortable with. But I wouldn’t count the other Mayo surgeons out, they’re all highly qualified.
Wishing you best of luck xx
Hi there! I’m not 100% certain, I’d speak to Dr. Wasson to be sure but I just read my surgery notes and there is mention of scissors, monopolar electrosurgery, and blunt and sharp dissection for excision. The notes state “minimal use of monopolar electrosurgery” in some areas of excision.
Hope that helps!
Hi! I am having long lasting relief and
major symptom reduction, I’m now 7 months post op. My 2 priorities with my surgery were A) keep my remaining ovary and B) long term pain/symptom reduction and I got both of those with Dr. Wasson. Having the confidence I do now with my surgeon, I look back on my 1st lap and wish I’d questioned a bit more and done more research.
Wishing you the best of luck and all of the relief with your 2nd lap xxx

I had my first excision surgery at Mayo clinic earlier this year with Dr.Wasson in Phoenix. I don't regret it at all.
First, we discovered that I also have endosalpingiosis which I didn't know before surgery and I found out that my previous salpingectomy was incomplete and part of my right fallopian tube was left behind and it had adhered to the side of my uterus and some ligaments/nerves. I'd been having unexplained right hip pain for 3 years - bad enough that I saw 4 different orthopedics, tried steroid injections and was offered a hip replacement surgery. I knew in my gut it was being caused by Endo but nobody believed me. That pain totally disappeared after surgery. I also had a lot of Endo on my diaphragm and ribcage which I think explained my random sharp chest pains. Oh, and my liver was fused to my diaphragm and my abdominal wall. Thankfully no bowel resection was necessary.
The recovery itself was brutal but weird. My Endometriosis pain was pretty much gone and was replaced by the substantial pain from the surgery. So while the first week was brutal, I was off the opioids by week 2 because it was back to the level of pain I was at before surgery. At 3 months out I was 90% pain free and having light easy periods. By 6 months post op about 20% of my pain had returned, so I did 10 weeks of pelvic floor physical therapy and it greatly reduced it. I still have to do some at home pelvic floor therapy myself weekly to keep my pelvic floor balanced, otherwise I start to have some pain again. So it's going to be something that I have to manage forever but it's much easier now that I have the tools.
TL;DR I have no regrets. I'm glad I chose a highly qualified surgeon, and if I need to do it again in the future I absolutely will.
Yep, it was Dr.Wasson at Mayo. She was excellent, very knowledgeable and kind and respectful of my choices. Also very responsive to all my concerns post surgery.
Unfortunately many OBGYN's still believe that the only way to treat Endometriosis is to do a radical hysterectomy and take out everything. But your wife is correct that comes with it's own problems like menopause and the potential for prolapse. Also, even without ovaries or a uterus - Endometriosis can still grow. I still have my uterus and one ovary, my surgeon suggested that I remove my uterus but I chose not to. I still got a huge benefit from surgery anyway. With Endometriosis I always know that there's a possibility that I may need another surgery in the future and I accept that risk because I would rather be conservative as I can be and not just take out all my organs that they think I don't need. If she doesn't consent to having them removed then legally they cannot do it, so she just has to make those wishes clear and read through the consent forms carefully to be certain. I'm not sure where you are located at but I had my surgery done by Dr Megan Wasson at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and her entire team was fantastic.
I don't know anyone in Southern California but my surgeon was Dr.Megan Wasson with Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, so not terribly far from you. She was knowledgeable, compassionate and she truly listened. She explained all of my treatment options and we discussed the pros and cons of each one and then once I decided what I wanted to do she supported my decision completely. Her team has remained very responsive and helpful even after surgery (not exactly easy to do when I'm over a thousand miles away from their clinic.)
If you're already an accepted patient at Mayo and you're willing to travel Dr Megan Wasson at Mayo Phoenix has been incredible and she's a highly skilled surgeon and Endo excision specialist.
I looked back and my excision surgery was actually $55k and was 4.5 hours long, but then I had an ovarian torsion 6 months later and that surgery was $35k. So between the two it was over $80k for the year. Thankfully insurance covered a lot of it (and Mayo's billing dept was great at making sure that happened), Mayo patient assistance also covered some and I paid about $2000 out of pocket plus travel costs.
I actually just had a robotic laparoscopic hysterectomy at Mayo with Dr.Wasson in December and it was $56k.
I've had three surgeries with Dr Megan Wasson at Mayo in Phoenix and I cannot recommend her enough. I travel over a thousand miles to see her. She did my extensive excision surgery and then when I had an ovarian torsion and was unable to get treatment at home she pulled strings and got me in to surgery with her last minute, and then in December she did a laparoscopic hysterectomy because my other ovary was trying to intermittently torsion (I'm a weird little basketcase.)
But she also checked and was unable to find any new Endo lesions during my two subsequent surgeries and I'm doing very well.
“Found through Reddit. Patient reports best post-surgical recovery ever. Wasson found residual ovary from prior hysterectomy and scar tissue; pathology clear for endo. Patient praised Mayo's approach to pain management, pre/post-surgery care, and feeling believed. Recommended to coworker as well.”

Mayo has just been the best experience! I never wouldve gone to Dr Wasson had someone here not directed me to her. After fighting for a year and an MRI later, I'm having my fourth surgery for this today! (This will be my 3rd laparoscopy, first after my hysterectomy). Mayo has just been the best and their care for pain and living life as normally as possible has just been awesome. Most importantly: the drs have all said they believe me and my pain. Just so validating to hear!
I highly recommend if you're having issues to please seek out Mayo, or if you are in Arizona, seek out Dr Wasson. I almost went with a different "specialist" that invalidated me left and right and this surgery may not have even happened.
Thank you so much random person that answered me early this year. I'm so happy to get this shit out!!!
Wish me luck today and dont forget how much y'all rock!
I just had surgery with Dr Wasson in December! She is just thr best and I found her through this forum as well. The way Mayo approaches their prr surgery and post pain was the best I've ever had and she did my 4th laparoscopy I've ever had. This is the best I've ever felt after surgery and I honestly cant recommend her enough.
Damn, I'm so sorry. I've had a full hysterectomy and when Dr Wasson did mine she discovered I had a piece of ovary still and that was causing a ton of my pain. And scar tissue! I have the most insecure bowels because they are always gluing themselves to the back of something (back of my pelvis via scar tissue this time). She actually didnt find any endometriosis, which we were shocked because it looked like it but the pathology reports all came back clear.
Mayo is just awesome. Some advice to help you:
- With you having so many of these surgeries already, I'm sure you know this/go through it, but she'll more than likely have you do a pelvic MRI scan. MRI team is awesome.
-The Phoenix campus is under construction and the buildings can get confusing (theres 3 but your appointments will be all over the 3 buildings and I'd get confused if I was suppose to go to building 2 or 3 that day) so leave plenty with time and make sure you know exactly which building you're going to that day.
-The Mayo app is dabomb.com. It's really easy to use , quick access to your labs, and I highly recommend doing the precheck in on there before your appointments whenever possible.
-Best selection of movies to watch while you you're in the hospital. Seriously, this makes such a huge difference to me. I watched 2 and 1/2 Christmas movies before I had surgery and I felt so happy and relaxed.
If you have any concerns, questions, or just need a fellow Phoenixian to chat with, by all means, DM me! Dr Wasson was just so reassuring and everyone at Mayo were validating and never made me feel like it was in my head.
Whooo, you poor people! So so sorry she had to go through ALL of that! So glad she has a strong partner to help her through it.
I had part of an ovary remaining after my hysterectomy and it took going to Mayo in AZ and dr Wasson was amazing, kind, and got me fixed up.
I'm just throwing my two cents in to say yes, if you can, please go to Mayo! They treat you like a person and their approach to pain and surgery it top notch.
I hope you and your wife are finally on your way to healing and peace.💛💛💛
Hi! I am still feeling pretty good! I've had other health issues not related to my pelvis or Endometriosis since then but I am so much better thank was before surgery with her. She took her time during the surgery and found out I still had part of an ovary left over from when I had my full hysterectomy 7 years prior to the surgery with Dr Wasson and that was causing me so much pain. I still highly recommend Dr Wasson for surgery and I recently recommended her to a fellow coworker as well :)
Good luck with everything and if you need any more information or help, feel free to DM me!
She gave me gabapentin, celebrex, and something else for pre surgery and post surgery I got either oxycodone or morphine, I forget which. That's crazy to me that you wouldnt get a narcotic of some sorts for post surgery! Being a woman is literally the worst. I hope you have success with Dr Wasson!

Mayo Clinic Journey (Sciatic Endometriosis)
Mayo Clinic Journey (Sciatic Endometriosis)
Hello lovelies,
For those of you that have been following my journey I thought I'd update. For those of you with interest in Mayo Clinic this is also for you! So I'm hanging around Scottsdale/ Phoenix in Arizona. They have several notable excision surgeons here and all of them have been trained by Dr. Megrina who is partially retired. I chose Dr. Meghan Wasson and had my consult with her last week. She was extremely kind, intelligent and willing to answer all my questions. She says she's handled several cases of Sciatic Endometriosis and feels comfortable removing it using the da Vinci robot. She confirmed that I had an endometrioma on my ovary and said she's only had to remove 4 ovaries in her career, seems optimistic that my ovary will be fixed and work as normal. She agreed to place the mirena while I'm under and said it shouldn't be a problem as she's only seen a few women who truly can't fit the mirena. If all goes well with it, it should prevent endometriomas growing on my ovaries. She'll be doing a lidocaine tap block and will be rotating ibuprofen and tylenol around the clock with oxycodone for backup if there's breakthrough pain.
Overall I feel confident in this plan, Dr. Wasson said with the mirena she feels I will not need another surgery for quite some time. I've heard the "you'll never need another surgery" rhetoric before but I do believe with the mirena it will hopefully spread them out farther then a year like this last time. I know we've had a couple of ladies go to the mayo pain clinic but I thought it worthwhile to post about surgical treatment here. My surgery will be at the end of September (as I'll need to save up for another trip down here, she has availability much sooner but I couldn't take it). I'll update more after the surgery but wanted you to know I've very much enjoyed the coordinated care I've recieved this far at the Mayo Clinic.
Thankful to all of you for your support.
Small Sciatic Endometriosis Update :)
Small Sciatic Endometriosis Update :)
Hello beauties,
Quick update here with a quick review first: I went to Mayo in Arizona and met Dr. Wasson who confirmed Endometrioma in left ovary and scheduled me for September.
She called today and said she's been having her specialty radiologists continue to go over my 9 MRIs from this year. Her radiologist believes my most recent MRIs show endo growths on my nerves. This is something I've been fighting for for a year basically. Dr. Wasson said that for it to show up on an MRI means it's most likely DIE and she's worried that it's gone beneath the initial nerve sheath. Because of this she believes the best course of action is to include her mentor and one of the excision pioneers, Dr. Magrina in my surgery. He isn't available for the date I'd picked but I'm hoping it doesn't push my surgery out too far, I'll find out tomorrow.
My leg is basically in a constant dull ache and at night it worsens. During my cycle it's horrific. I don't know if it's safe for me to double my gabapentin only during my period as you have to build up and slowly come down with a drug like that. I'd take more all the time but it makes me so dizzy and I'm already dizzy enough as I have POTS (also discovered at my Mayo visit).
Lots of waiting but lots of progress over here too it seems ❤
Flying after surgery? Requesting overnight stay in the hospital?
Flying after surgery? Requesting overnight stay in the hospital?
Hey friends,
My second excision is scheduled for early October, in Arizona with both Dr. Wasson and Dr. Magrina. My last excision was at a hospital 30 minutes away from my home, this one is 11 hrs by car or 1 1/2 hrs by plane (with an hour drive afterwards).
My surgeon says she prefers patients to stay 72 hrs in the area, I am wondering if this is enough time? With the costs of hotels, flights, etc all these things are cheaper when booked far ahead of time. I don't want to schedule a flight home 3 days after surgery then have to miss it because I can't make it. Last year I wasn't even able to do stairs in my home until day 4! What are your thoughts on length of time to stay? What are tips you have for flying post op?
My second question is, can I request to stay the first night in the hospital? I have incredible insurance and would really rather being somewhere where I can be helped for pain, bathroom breaks, etc. My first night last time was really awful and it's the only thing I remember about the first week of recovery. I have sciatic endometriosis and a moderately sized endometrioma (3 cm) that will be removed during surgery. I don't want to be in pain in a strange hotel room without any thing to help. My lovely mother will be joining me for the trip, she was wonderful at helping me last time.
Oh one last thing, have any of you had a tap block? Dr. Wasson says she injects lidocaine into the abdominal muscles and it lasts for 3 days.
Thanks friends.
Sciatic Endo/Mayo Clinic update
Sciatic Endo/Mayo Clinic update
Hey friends,
My surgery with Dr. Wasson was yesterday. She was extremely thorough and found absolutely no endometriosis throughout my pelvis. She diagnosed me with adenymosis and placed a Mirena. She said my sciatic nerves on the right side were super inflamed and enlarged compared to the left. She doesn't know why but believes it's the reason I have so much pain. Will have to meet with some neurologists back home.
I'm disappointed that my pain was not endo so it's not fixed but it's important that this was done anyway so we can move on and find someone to help. Thanks ladies for all your support.

Hey I don't live in AZ but I traveled there for treatment with Megan Wasson at the mayo clinic in Scottsdale. She is truly one of the best in the world. I highly recommend you meeting with her and her team to discuss your case, she saved my life truly. On top of that, my insurance didn't cover the mayo but everything was comped 100% by the mayo clinic financial assistance department. It was an insanely expensive surgery out of pocket and they covered it all!
What I'm guessing is that your endo was significant enough to have an estrogen supply established so when your uterus was removed it continued to thrive on its own. Dr. Wasson does an incredible job of excising the endo instead of burning it and has even removed endo from the chambers of the heart. For me personally she removed all of my organ linings and excised endo from my sciatic nerves and bladder. She's THE BEST. Anyway, wish you luck friend. Hopefully more painfree days in the future!
Wasson also did mine with her mentor over seeing it because I had endo on my nerves, I can't remember her mentors name. He may be retired now, he actually was part of the team who developed excision as treatment for endo over ablation. Anyways, mayo in Phoenix was great all around. Their endo center was so gracious and kind.

“Patient's 4th surgery (3rd laparoscopy, first post-hysterectomy). Dr. Wasson discovered a retained ovarian remnant causing pain and scar tissue adhesions. Pathology returned clear for endometriosis. Patient describes best post-surgical recovery ever and highly recommends. Mayo's approach to pain management and validation described as excellent. Patient has since recommended Dr. Wasson to a coworker. After fighting for a year and an MRI later, I'm having my fourth surgery for this today! Mayo has”

“Robotic laparoscopic excision of superficial endometriosis found extensively throughout pelvis. 12/16 pathology samples confirmed endometriosis. Patient still awaiting third post-op period as 'new baseline' for pain relief assessment. Pre-menstrual cramping only so far on third cycle. Doctor committed to ongoing care and said she would keep trying if surgery did not provide relief. She said to my partner 'if this doesnt provide relief, I will keep trying and working with her, dont let her worry.”

My god, you're going to make me sob. I love that for you so much. Seriously, chivers down my spine for how fucking amazing that is for you. I believe I was reffered to her actually? D.O., Megan N. Wasson? Does she do robotics only surgeries do you know? Was yours robotic? If you do not mind me asking... How invasive was your Endo? Do you also have Adeno or any other illnesses that they were sensative to? (If you dont mind divuldging, feel free to not disclose! ❤️)
This gives me so much hope, I might go see her and actually get it done. I know every body is different and every Endo is different, but if there's a chance she's good enough to do rhat for you. Perhaps she could do the same here? I also wonder how long was your recovery and did you attend pelvic physical therapy after and/or have to take any hormones so far after? Your journey must have been so incredibly difficult, so hellish. My fingers crossed for you to NEVER experience those levels of endo you did before, you deserve all the peace and love in the world 🥰 Thank you, i cant express how grateful I am!! We could message directly as well if that is better for communicating in depth? Lmk! ❤️🥳
Any updates? I'm seeing Dr. Wasson for surgery next week but I went to the same pelvic pain specialist (with dignity health right?) And they were HORRIBLE. I didnt do surgery with them becuse they had no idea what they were talking about and the staff and PA were just pathetic. I'm so glad to have found Mayo Clinic and Dr. Wasson.
No bruising. She is a magician im telling you! You might have a harder recovery just because its a more extensive surgery but she is genuinely a master in her field. I never wanted surgery EVER... but she made me feel genuine healing from it. She said to my partner "if this doesnt provide relief, I will keep trying and working with her, dont let her worry." I love her. She is like a second mum. So brilliant and is the DEFINITION of why the use Robotics in surgery could either be horrific or SPECTACULAR! Because she is so skilled, she is spectacular. Surgery is always a risk, I'm having some pain still and going back wensday (likely due to my coils from a different operation). But genuinely you will be in the greatest hands. I have medical PTSD from being abused by two gynecologists when I was a minor and then an adult... not ONCE did a single person from checkin to the on-call doctor when I got home say anything condescending, rude, or even ignorant... they treated me so human and while surgery sucks they are saints. I actually said that to them after, "im not religious at all, but you people are saints." I guess I gave them a giggle.
As for pathology... 16 samples, 12 ending up being Endometriosis. TWELVE. It was all over the outside of my vagina, all around my bowels, IN my uterus, on the walls of my pelvis too. Oh and the nurse told me immediately after and I started crying and she said "yes, you arent crazy, theyy found it and they got it." They were saints im telling you 😭 Mine was superficial though so yours might be different!! Oh, and i will say, my first period after was HELL and I'm still waiting to see improvement for my second one! So I cant speak to the success for relief yet. And im not sure if you'll have to deal with that or worse/better? (You are getting hysto- as in hysterectomy right? Or hysteroscopy? Because I got the second one and my recovery went well from it) Dont be afraid to ask them lots! 💜 they'll be honest with you. AND TRY TO KEEP MOVING, THE GAS PAIN IS UNBEARABLE! Walk within the limits they give you, frequent trips even to another room and back is great! but i'd do the surgery 10 times over- WITH DR. WASSON and her team ONLY- if it meant relief.
It was truly mentally a healing experience for me, just waiting to see what physical relief i will get. I hope you feel like I did, like Dr. Wasson and her team are performing surgery on themselves and treated you with so much respect and dignity its unparalleled.
Dont be afraid to ask for stronger pain meds! I got Oxycodone and muscle relaxers and tylenol since im allergic to ibuprofen! I skipped some pre-meds because ofy other conditions too and still was a-okay! ❤️ Pro-Tip, Ask for pudding after if you like it... unlimited pudding hack, they just keep bringing it! 🥳
Wishing you the best outcomes, the quickest healing, and all the love in the world! If you have more questions lmk!! But my mum is a PHD scientist, so just know I truly dont take 'semi-okay surgeon' as acceptable... Dr. Wasson and her team are the top Endo team, possbly the top in the world.
I tavelled from Tucson AZ btw!! 💜
Btw! I forgot to answer all the way, but yes they sent everything to pathology for me ❤️🥰 Dr. Wasson wont let anything go to waste!! If you are getting hysto as in "hysterectomy" you should ask! (hysto as in "hystereoscopy" is where they put a camera to your uterus and i had that done not hyterectomy). Dr. Wasson will not only treat you well, she will value the samples she collects! The whole team clearly understands the importance of life, samples, and the patient being more than just a patient. ❤️
-BACKGROUND-
I HAVE BEEN TO 12 GYNECOLOGIST IN TUCSON AND PHEONIX AZ. I have been to 2 in Cincinnati Ohio. I have been abused as minor by 2 and criminally neglected by 4- sending me to the ER all times. I have seen 5 gynecological surgeons for consults, all of them made easily disproven promises or horrific confessions about their lack in skill (the "surgery every 3-6 months for the rest fo your life" crap). I know a good chunk of human pathophysiology due to my upbringing and my passion for how the body functions on a cellular level. I have EDS, POTS, MCAS, Endometriosis, *May-Thurner syndrome + pelvic congestion (cured with stent and coils), PMDD, PTSD, Autoimune Encephalitis (confirmed via cunningham panel), chronic pain, and a suspected pituitary tumor *under investigation.
TLDR *and then some-
Dr. Agha at Iyad Medical Scottsdale first, ask for consult about pelvic congestion, pain, etc. You might need an MRI and/or Ultrasound- bring any previous imaging with you though!! Then Megan Wasson surgical gynecologist (wildly amazing, truly a gem of skill and compassion)- she would be able to reffer you to the right places or manage your care if you didnt want surgery (*i was out of options so i only went with surgery, it went amazing. Im just waiting for the 3 month period after healing to see "your new baseline" as Mayo said. But even if im not better, the experience was truly perfect- aside from the MRi department burning my coils on the wrong MRI machine. But Dr. Wasson continues to work with patients, she doesnt stop at a surgery and then dump you out of the clinic forever. She listened when I was still in pain a month ago and I am xonfident she'd listen if I'm in pain 10 years from now. She told mt partner- parophrased from him- 'I really think this will help her [me] and if it doesnt just know I will keep on trying and we will firgure it out.' I dont know if it was the post-surgery meds but I cried for half an hour when I haard that, tears of relief honestly.). I havent really tried other gynecologists at Mayo Clinic.
-First off... Dr. Agha @ Iyad Medical Scottsdale. Tell em their favourite Tucson patient, Andreana, sent ya 😉
PLEASE see Dr. Ayad Agha with IYA Medical. One in three AFAB people (assigned female at birth) have May-Thurner and pelvic congetion and the only symptom sometimes can be PELVIC PAIN. I have 5 embolization coils and a stent in my iliac because my vascular issues were SO BAD. May-Thurner is comorbid with endometriosis and laproscopic surgery raises your risk for May-Thurner syndrome + pelvic congestion. You could see Dr. Ahmed Agha (younger brother does PCP work) or Dr. Ayad Agha. They WILL help you out. *They are like family to me.
*For a neurologist in Pheonix I recommend David Saperstein, he also specializes in complex diseases like EDS, POTS, MCAS, and autoimune encephalitis! (The only one here that it out of pocket unfortunately, but wildly worth the price if you can afford imo).
*Avoid Heidi Apsey at mayo's breast clinic- she is uneducated, does not keep up on current reaearch, rude, dismissive, and sent me back to therapy by cornering me away from my caregiver (for medical PTSD) and telling me i was crazy and just percieving my illnesses and they werent real. To call her a "witch" would be an insult to strong women.
-Second off. DO NOT SEE ANYBODY BUT Megan Wasson!!
Dr. Safer at Banner Tucson is also good, she reffered me to Megan Wasson. But I have met no other good gynecologists and I have tried EVERYWHERE. I put off aurgery for YEARS because every surgical gynecologist I had either didn't care or was downright BRAINLESS. I found her on reddit, I saw some videos of her surgeries that she posted to twitter... she is an active surgeon and clearly keeps up on her education When she operates on you it is like SHE is on that table- not her mum, not her daughter, not a coworker... ITS HERSELF. I had surgery with her October because I was going to die of Endometriosis (my throat and chest was closing up on my periods, I got suicidal due to pituitary issues- likely a prolactinoma, the menstral agony combined with the abuse from GYNs was a horrific combo, I was taking 10 ibeuprofen pills every 6 hours and had 2 GI bleeds in 3 months. I was not going to live much longer). Dr. Wasson's surgical team is TOP NOTCH. She also helps through other methods like medications etc. I think but I tried everything before I saw her- and I cannot do birth control because I have Autoimmune Encephalitis!!
-How was meeting with Dr. Wasson?
To say I "felt heard" is an absolute understatement... I did not just feel heard I felt like I was talking to a clone of myself who had so much to lose for not believing my story. It felt liberating. I had surgery, the first two periods were AGONY... different from menstral pain... WORSE, SO MUCH WORSE. My advice? PRE-MEDICATE, DONT WAIT. Pop an oxycodone ASAP when your first period symptoms rears its ugly head!
-Relief?
I am now getting my third period. I will update this comment if I remember, but they say the third period is "your new baseline". Dr. Wasson was confident I would improve, and *so far* only pre-menstral cramping has happened. My periods still make me sick, but Wasson excised lots of superficial endometriosis... it was EVERYWHERE. Like a shotgun blast went off in my pelvis. She was kind when she went over my results but also excited and confident for me... there are some maybes she will tell you, but she will be fully honest when it comes to her patient's results. I asked about getting my "tubes tied" before we did the endo surgery and she said "I'd rather not just because it can cause hormone issues." I asked could we discuss it after excision? She said "Absolutely, I would love to talk about it with you!". Ask ALL the questions, how long before endo comes back? patient recovery? why do this? why do that? biggest risk in endo? Could this be improving or worsening pain? I have "X" condition, can I do this treatment? etc. etc.
*Kind of subjective POV from here on out, take with a grain of salt.
-Conclusion?
Megan Wasson was my last option, and even if the surgery went badly I know it was chance and not a lack of skill or care- not that chance should be an excuse for bad surgeons, as it was for all 5 surgical gynecologists I saw in tucson and pehonix. But truly, when she says "its rare" she has no reason to lie... she is confident because she could do this in her sleep... she uses a robotic excision device to IMPROVE patient outcome- not purely because of the "innovation"... she reminded me of my PHD scientist mother, passionate about what she does and acting like it is their reaponsibility to give other people more life to live.
*I do not accept the bare minimum when it comes to AFAB people's medicine. Megan Wasson goes above and beyond. What an incredible surgeron. What and incredible human being. A brilliantly educated person who truly defines "surgery" as a precise and skilled operation with the need for imense care and confidents. She re-defines "Women's health" with compassion and as someone who has been through it themselves.
Feel free to ask me questions! I can also drop a Shit List if yall want to see which obgyns are absolutely evil vile creatures that deserve next to nothing in life- in my *educated opinion of course😉
First off, that is horrific. I'm so sorry your wife has gone through this. It sounds like you and your wife have been dismissed and unheard. You are truly a compassionate and caring partner to be looking on reddit for her sake ❤️ I have a partner like that and I dont know how I could have done all this and continue going without him.
Secondly, I just met with Dr. Wasson the other day in person for the first time- other than my surgery! Thats how confident I am in her skills and care, she's just amazing and I hope she can help your wife! Dr. Wasson's attitude goes so beyond "bedside manners", she is intelligent, compassionate, supportive, and above all else she is confident in her abilities.
Answers to your questions-
I am unsure if Dr. Wasson does excise from peripheral nerves, however... She will try to point in the right directions, if she does not excise from periphral nerves. She practices "nerve preservation" and utalizes robotic laproscopic surgery not as a fancy little innovation but as a genuine tool in order to preserve more tissue and be more precise.
She would definitely opperate on someone without reproductive organs unless she had a serious concern not to. I asked to get my tubes out last time, gave her a bunch of reasons... she said she didnt need any reasons for my choices and she'd just do it. However, she then said she would not do the surgery *until I was healthy enough and it showed to me she sincerely cared about my health AND my choices as a person. When she speaks... it is like she is speaking to her own mother or herself. There is no school that can teach compassion as Dr. Wasson.
The wait time comes from getting in with Dr. Wasson in clinic, I had to wait months for this recent apointment. After that surgery scheduling can be months if its more comlicated and needs a bigger block of time, or it could be much shorter than that... total depends on what Dr. Wasson says but she'll be honest with you both.
The first surgery that I had happened in two weeks from the start of finding Dr. Wasson online, to scheduling the MRI, to surgery date. I got insanely lucky with cancellations, so if you have the time continue calling the scheduling team over and over. And for me... one of the schedulers had a HUGE attitude and was rude so I kept her on the phone forever and I just kept asking questions, asking about scheduling, asking how mayo works, which departments would I speak to for XYZ... periodically asking "are there apointments now? Can you check?" and a cancellation just so happened to come up. Otherwise, you should continue to call back as frequently as you can for cancellations. Its a game of luck unfortunately, but waiting months is better than never and I'd say the wait is so unbelievably worth it. Hopefully it can be worth it for your wife as well!
I think Dr. Wasson would help, however I'd also recommend a few other doctors to help rule anything out and help with any comorbidity your wife may have.
-Dr. Agha at IYA MEDICAL Scottsdale. Your wife should rule out May-Thurner syndrome if she hasnt already and any other venous issues- which can cause pelvic pain and excess bleeding on periods. I trust Dr. Agha with my life and the entire staff are some of the sweetest and most incredible people that I know in the medical field.
-Dr. Al-Hasan at IYA MEDICAL Scottsdale. He Deals with nerurology if your wife has any co-morbitidy with endo like autoimmune conditions (I have a bunch! Like Encephalitis in my brain- so not fun).
-Matt Erb, Tucson. A physical therapist for complex illnesses. I have not seen him yet, but I hear he is the BEST.
-Body Central, Tucson on street "Oracle" is 11/10 for pelvic floor therapy. I believe Caitlyn is the pelvic floor theapist, but it might be lindsy... I forgot sorry about that.
-Dr. Rebbeca Schaffer for dental in Pheonix at "Sundance Dental Care".
Please ask if there is anything else you'd like to know or need help with! Wishing your wife the world. My partner sometimes says "You're strong even though you shouldn't have to be." Your wife fights more than anybody should have to ❤️🎗️
“Patient had consult with Dr. Wasson, was scheduled for surgery in April. Mayo Clinic intake process described as very easy. Patient declined option to see a surgeon trained under Wasson for a sooner appointment, preferring to wait for Wasson directly. Just saw Dr Wasson. I’m also getting a pelvic mri, just waiting on scheduling. They are putting in a request with their geneticist, but are not sure they can get me in sooner. My surgery looks like it will likely be May. Did your MRI show anything? I’m just curious.
Wait, 80k or 8k? This is where I am going as well. Sorry I did look at your history because you also saw Dr Wasson and was just trying to get any other information.
I was put on a waitlist, but my appoint was about about 6 weeks after that. I got a text to get off the waitlist, say Dr. Wasson two weeks ago and am scheduled for surgery April 15th.
For my initial appointment or surgery? For my initial appointment I was called a few days after my intake with Mayo Clinic and told they were scheduling out beyond 3 months and that they’d call me again. I got a call about a month later and then was put on the books. I then got a text that an earlier appointment had become available with Dr. Wasson and I grabbed it. Before that appointment I got a call letting me know they could get me in sooner if I wanted to see the other surgeon, which I declined.
I had my appointment with Dr. Wasson last month, she said I would be scheduled for surgery in May or June, but I got a call a couple weeks after my appointment and was scheduled for surgery in April.
Has Mayo Clinic told you that you are approved as a patient? I was approved in a few days and moving forward has been very easy since then. I also got into their genetics department almost immediately because I needed to be tested for BRCA (I recently found out my mom was positive). They got me my results quickly and referred me to a high risk breast specialist in Tucson, but would have taken me as a patient at Mayo. I just didn’t want to travel for my breast management.
Working with Mayo Clinic has been very easy, probably the easiest healthcare experience I’ve ever had.
I would assume since you are on the waitlist you just need to wait. But, they did call me and let me know that everything had been approved to let know they were scheduling out. You can follow up, but I’m sure you’ll hear back soon. If you are okay with going with the other surgeon that was trained under Wasson you’ll get in sooner. Make sure you are responsive to texts about chances to get in sooner. Those appointments go in minutes.
“Performed excision lap in April 2021. Patient reports no endo symptoms since. Patient felt 'brand new' about a week after surgery. Minimal post-op discomfort — no gas/shoulder pain, just fatigue and sore throat the day after. Dr Wasson did my first (and only) lap in 2021. No endo symptoms since! Had my surgery in April 2021 and it was the best thing i've done! Dr Wasson did my excision.”

YES! Dr Wasson did my surgery in april. She was awesome.
I had my lap in april with Megan Wasson and Meenal Misal through mayo. I believe Dr Misal has moved locations as her fellowship ended. Both did a great job and the lap changed my life.
I think i waited 7-8 weeks to see a doctor. I initially contacted Mayo in december 2020 and my first appointment at the end of february. I had an appointment with an obgyn, ultrasound, then my surgery consult. Had my surgery in April 2021 and it was the best thing i’ve done! Dr Wasson did my excision.
Yes, definitely recommend her and Mayo as a whole! I was a nervous wreck as it was only my second time having surgery (first was wisdom teeth). The surgical team walked me through every step and made sure i was comfortable. Dr Wasson and Dr Misal (I think Misal left Mayo) were amazing! I didn’t have the gas/shoulder pain like a lot of people comment on. The next day i was fatigued and had a sore throat, but that was it. About a week after surgery, i felt brand new.
