Patient 1 Had Surgery Positive 26 posts ablation (first surgery, different doctor)excision surgery (second surgery, Dr. Nelson)

“Second surgery after failed ablation. Excision of deep infiltrating endo from ovary, front/back of uterus, bladder, Pouch of Douglas, and bowels. ~3 hour surgery. Recovery ~6 months. Over a year post-op with significantly improved quality of life. Did not personally meet Nelson until ~2 weeks before surgery — saw NP for consultation. Nelson noted to seem rushed/tired during appointments but is a skilled surgeon. NP described as exceptional — spent an hour+ at consultation. I would recommend doct”

I am also in Colorado in the front range area. My cousin also has endo and she had surgery with Dr. Brian Nelson, like the previous comment. I'm currently going to see him as well because he did such a good job with my cousin. He's who I would recommend and who I am trying to see. It's really hard to find one in Colorado! I wish you the best of luck!

I'm so so so sorry! I'm also in Colorado and am going to see Dr. Nelson. It sucks he's so backed up! I called at the beginning of the year and couldn't even get in to see him until May!! I'm seeing his nurse practitioner but man that sucks so much!! I'm so sorry for you. Did you ask Dr. Nelson if there's anything you can do while you wait? Perhaps a pelvic floor therapist if you don't have one already? I'm so sorry you're suffering and have to wait so long!! I know you live far but can you see if you can be put on a cancellation list?

HA! I also have a blue Cross hmo. I just went to my normal doctor and said I found this specialist, write me a referral please and she did. I've been super lucky. If you need Nancy's Nook on Facebook is a great resource for finding a doctor in your state. I know for Colorado the one I am seeing is Dr. Brian Nelson, we're still not sure if he's in-network but I don't care at this point. I'm in too much pain all the time. I really hope you can get some help. Here are tricks I use. I take my mother with me to my appointments. 1. is because I get treated better if there's another witness and 2, she can remember things for me and ask questions. You just need to be assertive and say this is what I want which can be really hard.

I totally understand. It just boogles my mind and then people ask me why I never go to the doctor and I'm like why should I? They're not going to help. It took a lot of me to go and I was told by GI once I mentioned endo that he kinda knew about it but didn't and washed his hands of me. It's so aggeravating and I feel like I know more about endo than most doctors do! I would totally go see the Nook one\~ If you're in Colorado I would recommend Dr. Brian Nelson. He's awesome! He's who I'm seeing! It was so liberating to have a doctor that understood. Like I have anxiety and doctors stress me out to the max so when they take my blood pressure and pulse they're always high because like I'm very very stressed. When I went to the specialist and told the nurse about it, she was like oh it's all good we'll just talk and then i'll take it and It was.. so amazing. And I have to say I was lucky when I went because I already knew I had endo. The NP was like you've done the hardest part already, finding out what you have now we're going to make you feel better. It's amazing how much impact doctors can have on our lives. I really hope you find someone that works for you!

Yeah that is super common and I'm so so so sorry for her. I think the best is to be patient!! I would also recommend seeing a pelvic floor specialist and if she can find one an endo specialist in your area! Nancy's Nook is a great place to look for that. If you're in Colorado then Dr. Brian Nelson is the best in the state.

Hi there! You are not in the wrong place! I'm so happy you found us but I'm so sorry you have to be here. I have endo. I was diagnosed with it through surgery last April. It sucks. It's painful but there is hope to understand what's going on. Here are my tips when you go to see your Gyn about endo. 1. bring a pain journal with you. Write down all of you symptoms including your issues with the bathroom. I have pain when I go to the bathroom on all ends! Turns out it could be related to my endo! But i didn't know because the doctor never explained what normal is. So write down everything you feel. 2. Bring a loved one with you. I always bring my mom because I find that I get treated better when there's a witness. I brought her to my regular GYN, to surgery, and to my specialist consultation. She's been amazing. they can ask questions you forget or don't know or just absorb info you may forget. 3. Be ready to fight. You are going to have to be very firm that you think you have endo and you want to do it. Do your research on Orlissia and Lupron before taking them because your doctor may push for them. 4. Ask for a pelvic floor therapist. Some of your pain may be due to extremely tight pelvic muscles or your nerves are just so sensatized to pain that they freak out more than they should. I have this and I am working to relax my muscles. Part of that is that i do something called needling. This is where my PT puts needles into my back and then puts electrodes to these needles to force my muscles to contract. This causes them to relax! I recommend it for everyone. 5. I would look for a specialist in your area. If you're in Colorado then I'd recommend Dr. Brian Nelson. We have a map on the side bar of this subreddit and you can check out Nancy's Nook on Facebook as well. 6. That's all i can think of but you can DM me if you need more info or just want to vent!

It's ok. My first surgeon only did ablation but Dr. Nelson is an excision specialist and like all he does is work with endo patients. I really hope you can find someone one to help you. I also know there's another Dr. in Durango but i'm not sure what he's like.

I think that if you want surgery then you should go for it. The bowel pain could definatly be related to your endo. I am going in for a second surgery with a specialist because I have super intense bowel movements and urination. Basically just being in a bathroom equals pain for me. I do want to caution that your OB/GYN may not have the skills to do surgery or the confidence. Endo can present in many different ways and can hide in really hard to find places if you don't know to look there. You also want the surgeon to do excision (cutting out) instead of ablation (burning) if they do find endo. I had ablation and it didn't really help and now I'm on a waiting list for a specialist. It super sucks! If I were you I would maybe get a second opinion from a specialist in your area. Nancy's Nook on Facebook is a great resource for information and the best doctors. If you're in Colorado then Dr. Brian Nelson is your go to guy.

Sure! It's Dr. Brian Nelson out of Longmont. He's very amazing and does excision surgery and will bring in other specialists for surgeries. I have met his NP and she was the most amazing medical profession I've ever met. I had an hour and a half appointment and she spent an hour with me. I know that they are booking for out for appointments with Dr. Nelson but you can probably get into see his NP quicker.

I guess it depends where you want to go. I am getting surgery done with Dr.Brian Nelson but he's based in Colorado. He is willing to work with other specialists to save organs and does surgery on the bowels and even diaphragm. He saved my cousins kidney after her endo had fused her bladder and uterus together and caused her kidney to start to fail. He also reconstructed her organs and removed her stage 4 endo. I have only heard good things about him but his wait for surgery is 9 months to a year.

I'm so happy for you!! I'm the same age and will be getting surgery in August with a nook Doctor (Dr. Nelson) I'm super nervous because I won't meet him until about 2 weeks before surgery though his NP is so nice. I might get part of my bowel removed? We're not sure yet but my first surgery found endo on one ovary, front and back of my uterus, my bladder, and Pouch of Douglas. I'm just hoping this will give me the relief I want. I have high hopes for this surgery and I hope yours goes well!!!

I would recommend doctor Brian Nelson out of UCHealth in Longmont! He did my second surgery and I’ve got my life back. He is very very busy and had a waiting list so you’ll likely see his pa. He is a great surgeon but he does feel a bit rushed during appointments. However his team know what they are doing and were some of the best I’ve had.

I had doctor Nelson for my surgery last year!! He is a great surgeon and knows what he is doing. However, he had been swamped and his personal time with patients isn’t the best. If you’d like there is a Colorado endo group in Facebook, if you have it, where you can read more experiences about him. This was my second surgery for endo but first with him. I’ve been over a year post op and my life is so much better. There are a few other surgeons in Colorado. I know of a Kaiser doctor and one in Durango. I would recommend that Facebook group.

I did not lose any of my reproductive organs. I was luckily able to keep all of them but I did have Deep infiltrating endometriosis along the front and back of my uterus, one of my ovaries, my Pouch of Douglas, bladder, and bowels. Doctor Nelson is very good in making sure that if he can't handle something he has help. My cousin, who was how I found Nelson, had endo that fused her bladder and kidney together. It was causing her kidney to not function properly. They did one surgery to clean out the endo when they saw the issue and had to do another surgery about six months later with a urologists' specialist. However, for my surgery, he did everything and is skilled to handle most endo. I had about a three hour surgery and the recovery was about six months for the full internal stuff. I was not offered a video but I did get pictures. I think the video is a great idea and you should for sure do it! Nothing is too personal for me. This is a hard journey that I still struggle with and I find being open and honest with people is the best way for me to heal from it. Feel free to ask more!

He does! I will say that I didn't see him at my first consultation either. I did see him for pre and post op but I also did mine last August during Covid. I know he has been a bit overwhelmed with patients and staff changes so his bedside may not be the best or he might seem tired or distracted. However, this didn't bother me too much because the entire process for surgery was night and day compared to my first surgery with a different doctor. I just wanted to warn you that he is a great surgeon but he might seem tired during appointments. I had my surgery at Boulder Hospital and they were amazing! All the staff I worked with knew doctor Nelson and about his patients. They were so understanding and kind. I will say i could do light walking probably within four weeks? However I didn't really try any real exercise until at least 8 weeks, but i did not feel fully recovered until about six months later. I think this might have been due to the fact that this surgery was only a year after my previous surgery and it was much more intensive with what was removed. I didn't find the air too uncomfortable but a heating pad and walking helped a lot. It acutally wasn't my abdomen that hurt from the air but my shoulder. This is very common and they should give you tips in your paperwork during your pre op appointment on that. My pain wasn't too bad. I stopped any prescription pain killers within 2 days of surgery because it just wasn't that painful and could usually handle just some advil or maybe one stronger pill to help sleep. I was more concerned about having a bowel movement. I had horrific bms before surgery because of my endo. i was always constipated and it felt like every time i went it was going to pull my intestines out with it. With my first surgery I did not have a bm until about day five? post op which was too long but that doctor wasn't great. However, I was able to have an ok one because I started stool softeners early.

I will say I had surgery about four years ago and Nelson was a great doctor for me but I have heard some not great reviews as well. You can try to get on the Colorado Endo Girls Facebook group if you want to see more. Overall I was back to work in about a week but it took me several months to be fully back to myself maybe over half a year.
Patient 2 Had Surgery Positive 5 posts excision surgeryhysterectomyleft ovary removal

“Dr. Nelson performed excision surgery, hysterectomy, left ovary removal, bowel resection, appendectomy, and ureter repair in a single operation under 2 hours. Found endo was far more extensive than prior gynecologist had noted — present on diaphragm, rectum, appendix (near appendicitis), left ovary fused to colon. No complications post-surgery. Patient reports no endo pain or ovarian cysts in nearly two years. Dr. Nelson advocated with insurance to cover the surgery and waived remaining costs. D”

Again, it might depend how little , and it’s not quite Colorado Springs or Denver but in Longmont I saw Dr. Brian Nelson at UC health, and he did my surgery/has been my endo specialist since October! He’s done everything from exams to surgery to pain management, he’s very friendly and good at what he does. :)

A Year After Surgery A Year After Surgery Hello all :) I am 25, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Endometriosis in September 2021. After years of hell and on again off again debilitating symptoms, I finally had my answer. However, after undergoing my first surgery to remove an endometrioma at that time I very rapidly got worse. I spent 3-4 months doing multiple ER Trips, on pain medication almost all the time. So many nights just spent in agony on the bathroom floor, so many entire nights spent in the ER being told nothing could be done. I get insanely sad just trying to remember it. December 2021, I had my first excision surgery alongside a hysterectomy, left ovary removal, bowel resection basically and my appendix removed with Brian Nelson at UC Health in Longmont, Colorado. He is a Urogynecologist that also specializes in Endo removal. He found that my endo was a lot worse than the regular gynecologist had said. My appendix was destroyed and on the verge of appendicitis (confirmed by pathology) my rectum was being deeply infiltrated but he was able to remove it all. My left ovary was obliterated and stuck to my colon, endo was all over my diaphragm which explained the chest pain I had that no one else could figure out. My uterus was bulky, covered in endo on the outside and I did not want kids and we both agreed that if it was bad when he got in there it would/should be removed. And so it was. (And yes I’m aware that a hysterectomy isn’t a cure.) Recovery this year has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, mentally and physically. I am just now getting my strength back. Just now really truly getting back to life. Was put on depression/anxiety medication because of all the trauma of those days. So many days I just didn’t think I’d get through it even after surgery. However, I rarely have bad days now. Very few and far in between. Those bad days hurt because I am reminded of the illness and what it can do. But I’ve had No complications, no prolapse, weight gain (that wasn’t my own doing, am enjoying food finally again) no full days spent writhing in pain and in tears. I have had no where near as many issues. I am working again, in a place I love and feel confident. I can eat almost whatever I want (with slight consequences if I’m not careful but I also have IBS.) my energy and light have been the best they have been since I’ve been in high school. I am truly grateful for the treatment I received because I don’t think I’d be alive today if I hadn’t the surgery I had, Dr. Nelson truly helped me in so many ways and I , to this day have not paid a dime for the treatment I received from him. He did my surgery despite insurance not approving it and made them budge to cover after, showing and educating them about what endo can do. There is hope. There is good days, days without the constant pain. Even without surgery. I was not getting a lot better until I began trying to treat my mental health and seeked out physical therapy and actually accepting I’d have to take the time and space to care for myself, and showing myself that compassion and being around people who also did. Accepting what happened to me was horrible and traumatic, what is happening to so many of us. I see all of you and hear all of you, this disease is so unfair and horrible and I hope for our cure someday. But hang in there and give yourself love and lots of heating pad time for making it through one day at a time. 💛 I have felt reflective of how this time of year makes me think of my struggles and I am reminded of how lucky I was. I am here to offer whatever tips and help I can where I can. You got this!

Dr. Brian Nelson at UC Health in Longmont Colorado. He is a urogynecologist who specializes in Endo. He was very understanding and did not push back at all when I told him I’d probably want a hysterectomy although I’m young. Ended up not owing anything for my surgery cause he knew how much pain I was in and I wasn’t working so after insurance budged (when they wouldn’t cover anything for my surgery he pushed back until they did) and covered some he waived the rest!

Yes I do and..i think so? I haven’t seen him since my surgery a year and a half ago but it’s Dr. Brian Nelson at UC Health in Longmont Colorado. He did my hysterectomy/left ovary removal, excision, appendectomy, fixed my ureters , lots of things. He’s also a urogynocologist so he does bladder things alongside normal gynecology! He did all of this in under 2 hours, really knows his stuff! I haven’t had really any endo problems since then

This happened my first surgery, gyno missed a lot of my endo. By the time Dr. Nelson was in there it was a lot worse than what she noted! A lot of gynos aren’t trained to spot what endometriosis can look like but Dr. Nelson specializes in it and how to care for it/remove it in all areas. Even can do bowel resections if necessary! Took it off my diaphragm as well. I also had to travel a little to see him and they’re really accommodating and understanding and will do everything remote up to the surgery date! I hope you get the relief you deserve and answers!

Should I do the surgery with Dr. Nelson in CO or try other things first? Should I do the surgery with Dr. Nelson in CO or try other things first? Hi all, I was planning on trying pelvic floor PT, dietary changes, & getting checked for iliac vein suppression while waiting for my excision surgery. These were all recommendations by the NP at the clinic I am going to while I wait 4-6 months for surgery. Well turns out, it’s actually a 4-6 WEEK wait for surgery. Should I go ahead and schedule it? Or should I try these other things first? I’m scheduling with Dr. Brian Nelson in Colorado, let me know if you have experience with him! I’ve seen glowing reviews as well as horrific reviews, so I’m even more nervous.

Yes I went with Dr. Nelson. The surgery went well and they excised stage 2. However I still have problems. They continue to work with me which I appreciate. Right now they have me on higher doses of progesterone which actually is helping me a lot. But they said 80% of people who have surgery with them do feel a lot better after surgery. I’m just part of that stubborn 20%. I wouldn’t change it though because I got answers and they took out the root problem. I’m also still in pelvic floor PT.
r/r/endometriosis May 15, 2025 +1 pts
I think he’s probably the best in Colorado. If you’re willing to travel, Dr. Yeung in StL is great and I’ve had a friend get stage 4 removed by him. He doesn’t take insurance though like Dr. Nelson. I would say the surgery was a lot harder on me than I thought it would be. It took me a few months to fully recover and since my symptoms have lingered I’m just now starting to build back to where I was before my symptoms got so bad a few years ago. I think pelvic floor PT was necessary after surgery— even though it’s minimally invasive with the incisions they do a lot of work on your insides. They took out all my peritoneum in my pelvic cavity. I have some trouble emptying fully when I go #2 that’s definitely worsened after surgery— although it’s getting better now with PT. I wouldn’t say any of this is Dr. Nelson’s fault, I just am a more stubborn case and it is a pretty intense surgery. If you do it, just be prepared that it could not solve all your issues and the recovery could be hard. But again, that’s me. Other people have had easier recoveries and more symptom reduction.

r/r/hysterectomy Sep 18, 2024 +6 pts
Hi! I suffered with severe endo for 8.5 years, had one major laparoscopic surgery (after trying depot lupron for 6 months) and a second surgery to remove a 2.5 inch endo cyst on my ovary. After these surgeries, I would be on constant birth control to avoid having periods as that is how it can spread (it can without it, too, it just reduces the chances). Finally, spring of 2023 at 32 yo, I got excruciating pain and heavy bleeding out of nowhere. Went back to the doc and she said “surgery or IUD” and like hell will I ever choose the latter. So I was set up with a doctor that not only would do the hysterectomy, but EXCISE the endo and built up scar tissue (most doctors ablate it). Dr. Nelson in Longmont, CO, is one of the few docs in the country that do this. A few months later, I had my excision and total hysterectomy. The goal was to save the ovaries, but my endo was too severe that they couldn’t save them. I’m on Premarin now because of it. Also, I did give consent before surgery that they could remove the ovaries if needed. With the endo, it was so severe that they had to “scoop me out like a pumpkin,” which is just um, disgusting haha. Sex is a new learning process now, but I haven’t been dating much, so I’m not sure what it’s like now that I’m one year po. The infertility and hormone replacement was a price I was willing to pay to get rid of the pain I dealt with for so long. For me, the answer was easy. But it’s a major surgery and you should weigh all your options. If you need any further support, just reach out! I hope my perspective was helpful in some way to you!

I was just about to turn 33 when I got mine. Went through two endometriosis surgeries at 24 and 26, went into what we thought was remission for years as I was on continuous birth control and then it came back with a vengeance spring of 2023, heavy bleeding out of nowhere and excruciating pain. FINALLY the doctors agreed to do the surgery. Dr. Brian Nelson with UC Health in Longmont, CO, is one of the few doctors nation wide that will do an actual excision, not ablation, or endo tissue. And he didn’t care what age I was, he just wanted to do what was medically best for me (and honestly necessary). He and his team are absolutely wonderful and I’m so thankful I found them.

I cried because I am so used to not being believed. You could try checking him out. I am so sorry for what you’ve experienced.

I had my last lap with Dr Nelson as well in May 2019. He was awesome! I had my surgery at Boulder hospital though he also can perform surgery at the hospital in Longmont. He was very thorough with his surgery and I am extremely happy with the results. His nurse Caitlin was great.

I had my lap in May 2019 with Dr Brian Nelson. He's with UC-Health in Longmont and my surgery was at the hospital in Boulder. Totally recommend him! My IVF nurse used to work with him before joining RMFC and she's great too.

Northern Colorado Specialists Northern Colorado Specialists I was diagnosed ~7 years ago and have had two ablation surgeries in Austin, TX that just created more a scar tissue and little relief. I had an appointment with Brian Nelson (or at least his as NP for now) to discuss excision surgery.. and my insurance decided he is now out of network. I am absolutely gutted by this. Can anyone recommend a specialist in Northern Colorado? I am in Fort Collins.

Thank you! I currently have Cigna.. I only went with them because it showed he was in network with the specific plan I have but when I called the insurance company they said no. Super frustrating and confusing! I’m so glad Dr Nelson was able to help you so much! If I have to wait until next open enrollment to find an insurance that has him in network, I will!

Thanks so much! It’s been a bit rough but I’m finally starting to feel more “normal”. Honestly, post surgical pain wasn’t even that bad? It was more all over body aches. I felt like I was sick… my partner kept having to remind me “yeah because you just had surgery” LOL. Dr. Nelson was able to excise all the endo he found and I’m feeling super hopeful. Best of luck to you.

Endo confirmed! I’m in shock Endo confirmed! I’m in shock I had my surgery(laparoscopy and cystoscopy) today with Dr. Nelson in Colorado and I was so convinced I didn’t have it and scared they wouldn’t find anything. I do have a fibroid in my uterus that they did not remove because he didn’t think it was causing my pain. I’m going to get a second opinion on this after I’m healed. My main symptoms in hopes that it can help someone else💗 -3 years of pelvic pain(mostly bladder pressure)-thought it was a UTI for the longest and just told it was cystitis or “the honeymoon phase”🙃. I went on antibiotics for a long time and nothing helped. Bladder pressure is 24/7 and increases around my cycle(Mediterranean diet has helped) -painful periods since I first got my period but not bad enough to send me to the ER -nausea with periods -IBS( fluctuation of constipation and diarrhea-when I had to go I had to go immediately -butt lighting( doesn’t last long but I do get it occasionally) -Insane mood swings and randomly crying(hormones are crazy since I first got my period) -Extreme fatigue -bladder spasms and extreme soreness occasionally -urgency to pee, always have to push pee out -bloating!!! I had to be very careful with what I eat Curious if my past issues somewhat relate to endo. -Constant tonsillitis for years and eventually removed them. They were always swollen and had white spots -longterm COVID - taste and smell took 2 years to come back and sinus infection took 6 months to go away. It was awful. Allergies - post nasal drip
