my sister and i are going to Portland, Oregon to see Dr Nicholas Fogelson and Dr Shanti Mohling. I really like their instagram and youtube videos, they sound like they really believe peoples pain & know a lot.
Of course i cant fully diagnose bc you need a laparoscopy to do that, & probably even a endo specialist to see if its around your bowels & colon. So disclaimer i cant say for sure because of that & im not a medical professional. But i would say theres a high possibility that yes you have endo. maybe even bowel endo or on your colon??
One thing you said that you didnt have this pain during pregnancy kind of makes it sound like it too. Not that endo stops during pregnancy for sure, but it is supposed to be cyclical, and i can imagine it lessening or stopping then. They also like to say getting pregnant can help or stop endo, but im not too sure on that theory. Either way that is a red flag or tip.
I have pain in my butthole too, so does my sister & it really hurts us to even sit. I didnt suspect endo until my sister started birth control over a year ago, and her butt pain SIGNIFICANTLY lessened to almost none. So now we both think there is endo maybe on bowels or colon. Birth control did NOT stop or lessen mine tho. But it also hasnt stopped my period at all, i breakthru bleed most days actually so im thinking adenomyosis (endo kind of in the uterus) & i still have bad debilitating cramps.
My thought tho is you might want to have a colonoscopy? if you havent already just to rule anything else out? I have blood in my stool but i figured hemorrhoids, i was right it was just that. Colonoscopy typically is not going to show endo. as the endo could be on the outside of the colon or bowel, & the colonoscopy is just seeing a camera inside. but it at least rules it out, & shows doctors theres nothing to see inside. its more likely an endo problem. I also would try to see an endo specialist. Nancys Nook i think has a list, & icarebetter is good. Im seeing a specialist out of state in Portland & my sisters surgery is with them in a week or two. She asked for a colorectal surgeon to be present to help with her suspected bowel endo.
Id also suggest watching Dr Nicholas fogelson on youtube/instagram. Dr shanti Mohling on instagram. The videos explaining & showing endo greatly helped me. The other videos on youtube that keep recently talking about butt pain are from Dr Camran Nezhat, a lot of the recent videos he talks about butt pain being endo & it solidified for me to keep pushing for an answer.
Hope this helps!
Hey! im glad you mentioned her! how did it go?? My sister is seeing Dr Shanti Mohlings partner Dr Nicholas Fogelson for surgery next week for endo and bowel endo. im so nervous for her. I see Mohling for a consult a few days after…
Wow this gave me so much relief. my sister has surgery with Fogelson in 2 days & i see Mohling for the first time the next day. Its a consult & exam but im aiming for her thoughts, but ultimately a lap to search for endo & a hysterectomy bc im just so sure i have adeno.
Im getting so anxious about my sisters surgery, she could possibly have bowel endo & im just scared. but today my fam met with Fogelson & he was so nice and reassuring. i look forward to meeting Mohling but im anxious about it too. She is always nice on instagram tho.
Well im i shouldnt be giving medical advice bc i truly dont know the circumstances, so i could be wrong. But i dont like that that doctor said you have to do 6 months of pelvis floor PT for 6 months “before they would do anything”
I mean maybe that would be helpful? idk much about it, and how well it helps? but it doesnt stop endo? like you need your endo excised right?
Idk thats weird to me. Idk if it would be helpful in your extra research to watch some endo specialists on IG (nicholas fogelson, shanti mohling, camran nezhat) their videos are very helpful to me. Maybe something will be helpful to you on there!
Im not an expert on this, I just wonder if looking up the videos (that me and my sister watched and really were helpful to us) from Dr Nicholas Fogelson & Dr Shanti Mohling. Theres vids on youtube that are more in depth. But i liked their vids and explanations of endo stuff on their Instagrams. Im actually getting surgery tomorrow morning with Dr Mohling, has been THE BEST.
Okay i hope this is okay to do, I really want to recommend the doctors me and my sister went to! I hope i’m not stepping on any toes, I also know this isnt available to everyone to travel and pay for out of state or out of country (idk where u are) But i just feel for you and i hope its okay to recommend them, or at least help you do more research! My sister and i watched their youtube videos on surgery and explaining complicated surgeries for endo, and i really liked their instagrams too with more pics and videos of surgeries and I could just really tell their skill level and confidence and they really seem to know what to do, no matter how “bad.”
They are in Portland Oregon. Dr Fogelson and Dr Mohling. They are endo specialists, on nancys nook i believe, and also part of iCareBetter so they have surgeries videoed and are proven to he experts. They also take on cases that are too hard or that other surgeons couldnt do or whatever. They do excision of endo, and i really believe if there is any visible endo possible, they will remove it. Maybe the adhesions too? but you would have to talk to them. Did your surgeon take any pictures for you?
Altho i dont know much about microscopic endo, that i dont know what to say about and if a doctor cant see it, theres not much to do :/ sorry i am trying to help my friend with the same thing.
Idk if this comment even helps you. but I feel for you, im so sorry! What i loved about them is that they really believed me and did their best. Its like she knew everything i was concerned about and on the exam even felt the possible places for endo (she saw i had more pain and felt more on my left side, and i had no idea!)
I was literally gonna say the exact same person. Dr Shanti Mohling in portland oregon is the actual best. i would go see her if you can. I traveled out of state and it was super worth it
I heard one dismissive gyno doctor dismiss my sisters pain as not endo bc “the pain wasnt cyclical or only on her period so it cant be endo”
But that lady doesnt know anything tbh
and many and most of what i read is pain a lot of the time or even everyday. Cyclical makes sense and sometimes that too or maybe started off as just during period.
But endometriosis is pretty extensive and is considered a “full body disease” as it has been found on every organ of the body, it also can continue hurting and causing pain even when one gets a hysterectomy because it doesnt need your period to be causing pain. It creates its own estrogen or something like that (im sorry i just woke up and im sorry if i misspeak. someone will correct me im sure if i say something off.)
Plus cysts can hurt at any time and rupture at any time :( Im sorry you are going thru pain!!! My sister had a cyst rupture, her gyno called her in to tell her and they would talk about it (but then in the visit gave no help and actually played it off and didnt even mention it ruptured. but refused to help her with anything. my mom and her left crying because she said there was nothing to be done which isnt true. and yelled at them for even mentioning medicine for pain.) 2 days later the tech from the ultrasound place called and was like…..um your cyst looks like it ruptured on the scans we have and you must be in excruciating pain…. I got them to listen and talk to someone else, at the very LEAST hormonal birth control can sometimes help. Even surgery is sometimes an option.
I suggest finding endo related instragrams and endo specialists even have instas and youtube videos of their surgeries, or explaining the pain that i found super helpful. (I love Dr Fogelson and Dr Mohling on youtube and insta if that helps)
yikes any gyno who dismisses you like that and says a lap wont work, AND just keeps pushing birth control and says it will take 3 years to work????? girl please get out of there. get a new doctor if you can. preferably an endo specialist if you can.
do your research on endo. follow instas, i follow some endo specialists and their vids and posts have educated me so so much and they are so skilled and awesome and believe patients!
(dr shanti mohling and dr fogelson are some good examples.)
Yes you should start pushing for answers and help. but i say pushing because a lot of doctors are going to dismiss it and say its normal. its not normal.
Id recommend also doing research, alot on endo and on Adenomyosis, since you bleed for so long. I do too. and no doctor cared to mention to me and when i finally learned about it from a link my sister sent, i was floored and when i brought it up to doctors they said i was too young. which isnt true. do your research.
Look up endometriosis specialists, they are the ones who listen. I would recommend reading others stories, follow and watch instagrams and tik toks even of woman who have those same struggles. Id recommend watching youtube or instagrams vids and posts from endo specialists Dr shanti mohling and dr fogelson to start off with. They educated me so much. Dr Mohling is awesome she ended up being the first doctor to believe me and listen and found my problems right away.
Yeah but i think every excision specialist might set up their own rules. Youd want to double check with their website or maybe call the office even.
I know this isnt close by, but my sister and i did a ton of research and chose to travel a few states over to Portland Oregon for the specialists Dr Shanti Mohling and Dr Nicholas Fogelson. Their website i think says they have their fee for themselves and their assistant (DM me and ill send you around what their fee is, but their website also has it) but the other thing is there is a hospital fee because they do the surgery in a hospital and use a real nice machine to robotically do the laparoscopy. The hospital fee can be quite high (the higher fee) especially if your insurance isnt willing to pay out of network, out of state. My insurance did not want to, and denied the surgery. im still appealing.
Anyway, The specialists i mentioned are incredibly nice and their skill level is awesome. Im so so happy i went there. The hospital they work with is also incredibly nice and kind and organized. We have loved every bit and have felt heard and believed!!!! and we dont regret our surgeries at all. The morning of surgery i felt so happy and excited (and secure because i had so much confidence in Dr Mohling and skills and she would respect all my wishes.) I cant say enough good things about them!
My sis and i traveled to portland oregon for the specialists there. My sis did a lot of research and found them. Dr Nicholas Fogelson and Dr Shanti Mohling in Portland. They are amazing and helped us so much. I had my surgery for endo excision a week and a half ago. and im doing really good. She found everything, i think other doctors would have missed it. She is the only doctor that listened to me and found what im talking about after 15 years of doctors not listening to me.
(im not an endo specialist or doctor.) I would say its probably not, however! endo can be lesions, but it can also be hard nodules. Ive watched some of Dr Fogelsons and Dr Shanti mohling’s instagram and youtube videos. and they show surgery scenes, and ive seen peoples endo be hard nodule that you can feel i think,
But idk if youd be able to feel from your stomach?? So i honestly dont know.
I do totally recommend those two doctors in Portland, and recommend watching their videos. they are the best!
Ok friend i was just checking. thanks i dont know what all the words on this post mean, im not in oregon.
But i did just go to portland last month for an endo specialist. I would highly recommend Dr Shanti Mohling. She is amazing, I have nothing but good things to say about her. She *immediately* found my endo spots and believed me. Also did the ultrasound herself and saw signs of adeno which is what i was thinking too bc i couldnt get the bleeding to stop. Did amazing on my surgery. Really went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. i wish i lived in portland bc i only want to see her. (oh actually her partner is awesome too, Dr Fogelson.)
You can watch some of their videos on insta or youtube too.
The surgery was done at Good Samaritan Hospital, and the hospital was super nice too.
I think i saw a clip of a surgery on Dr Fogelson’s instagram (endo specialist in portland) and he removes a bump on/in the vag i believe on the video. It was like a hard nodule if i remember right? i have no clue obviously if its the same thing you are dealing with…but wanted to say it bc maybe you will relate to it if you watch the videos? Disclaimer, im usually ok with the surgery videos but that one was a little tough to watch for me for some reason. but he did a great job.
Actually he and his partner Dr Shanti Mohling are great specialists, Dr Mohling just did my endo surgery 3 weeks ago. They are the best.
So my sister did a ton more research than i did, but what we ended up really liking and appreciating were Dr Nicholas Fogelson’s youtube videos. He is an endo specialist in Portland, and his videos sometimes show surgeries explaining them, and other he is talking about endo or treatments and he just explains things so well. I ended up looking up his partner too Dr Shanti Mohling, and watched both of their instagram posts and videos. Super knowledgeable and explain things so well, obviously have empathy for their patients, liked and commented on my comments in the comment section and when we finally went to see them these past two months, they were just as great in person.
Really i found the most research and knowledge googling, but also instagrams from people who have had endo for so long and those two doctors especially. They show clips of their surgeries and I loved how she even showed the tiniest spots of endo and its considered “stage 1” so many would conclude “its not that bad” but she even remarks the great pain that stage 1 people have and it can be debilitating. Their skill level is awesome. They do excision of the endo (not ablation…thats burning the surface of the endo and often causes more pain and doesnt remove the problem at all.)
Yeah you do have to do some digging for real info on endo. They are what helped me.
Oh also I couldnt stop my bleeding, turned out theres a sister disease to endo “Adenomyosis” with the uterus, and all local doctors just brushed me off and said im too young (their excuse for everything) but Dr Mohling believed me and looked for the problems and found them immediately.
Sorry if this doesnt help.
yes! Shanti Mohling is amazing, love her! cant recommend her enough. She made more progress on me and actually did the surgery and diagnosed me, something i have been waiting for for 15 years. She believed me and is super skilled, and is super loving and kind. Life Changing!! How is your daughter??
70% of gynos who claim to know how to know what endo looks like cant point it out on pictures. 10 minutes is ridiclous, i would complain. im so sorry. Did they even take pictures?? It would take longer than 10 minutes to look everywhere endo could be.
Id also suggest finding endo specialists online to see then explain endo and surgery. My sister found Dr Nicholas Fogelson on youtube, he posts some of his surgeries too. I particularly liked his instagram posts explaining things, and his partner’s instagram Dr. Shanti Mohling.
Might want to look up what some endo specialists say on this. Theres a reason excision is called the gold standard. It might even mean that they arent up to date with current methods/reasons or they arent skilled enough to do it.
My sister and i liked Dr Nicholas Fogelson’s youtube videos & his instagram videos, even showing surgery videos & explaining. I like his partners instagram Dr Shanti Mohling. I like also how they are a part of iCareBetter (surgeons who have proved thru videos of their surgeries that they are skilled in excision of endo.)
I just had my lap at the end of september, with Dr Mohling. I feel so so much better, saw the video of my surgery & saw the endo cut out.
Youre not crazy.
My sister and I and many others have had their fair share of horrible doctors who gaslight us all and lie and just dont care. My sister had a gyno say it wasnt endo & she was just depressed & she needs to start exercising (my sister isnt even overweight) & go shopping at the mall & her pain would stop. she also said my sisters pain wasnt endo since it hurt even “not on her period”….outdated & wrong…….
I had a nurse at my gynos when i went for an emergency visit that day from bleeding so much ON THE PILL, i explained how it was so much bleeding (they truly dont care and hear it all the time) AND I was having incessant worst cramps of my life ON the pill. & that i was bleeding so much i get nosebleeds on my period. She laughed at me & said try a humidifier & that “maybe birth control just isnt for u sweetie” i said “maam. its like this with and without bc, hell. thats why im trying to prove to u guys and insurance that i need a lap for endo.” she just stared at me. & also laughed at me when i asked about ADENOMYOSIS.
(please look into adenomyosis, i fit all the symptoms yet no doctor brought it out to me)
She said there was no way, quickly glanced at an ultrasound and said “yeah no way. plus youre young.” sent me for blood work..,.the bloodwork at least proved i wasnt lying about how much i was bleeding. i was so close to anemic, and my iron ferritin was so low it was at 7. i needed iron infusions.
Anyway. a lot are jerks, a lot of specialists can just call themselves specialists. my sister did a ton of research & we went out of state. She liked their youtube videos & showing their surgeries & honesty & explanations & skill level. I found their social media on insta & i loved how they just believed women & seemed so kind. So we talked our parents into it, & went to Portland. They were amazing. I have no complaints on my surgery im 5 months post op. Im still baffled how they just were so kind & believed me right off the bat. Immediately asked if i thought adenomysis, the only doctor to do so. Found the spot on my rectum too that was causing me shooting butt pain. I was up and walking & showering myself 2 days after surgery & i feel so much better. Highly recommend them, or at least checking out their Instagram, they are making a lot of videos this month bc of Endo Awareness Month.
Make sure you find a specialist that knows what they are doing, only does excision, not ablation. I also like the website/instagram iCareBetter, these specialists have shown thru their surgery videos they KNOW what they are talking about.
Specialists in portland: Dr Shanti Mohling, Dr Nicholas Fogelson
I traveled out of state for Dr Shanti Mohling in Portland, and i highly recommend her. Great experience in every way, above and beyond helpful, i felt so secure i was happy and giddy the morning of my surgery. My sister and i have no regrets with that office.
I recommend Dr Shanti Mohling in Portland. I have nothing but good things to say about her. My sister and i have no regrets. I wish i couldve gone as a teenager. Check out her insta, it made me choose her because of her kindness and empathy. Her skill level is awesome. She is also on iCareBetter as someone who has had their surgeries videoed and reviewed as an expert in endo excision.
Wow your story is insane, im so glad you got to Dr Mohling after all that. I hope you are doing better, as best you can. I wish i read your review of her before my surgery 8 months ago, BUT i didnt need it hehe because I read other good reviews of her, saw her surgery videos, and her instagram is amazing. Meeting with her i seriously saw evidence of her skill on the first visit. But still, your story would have helped, so anyone who reads this, look into her. She is serious that good.
She believed me immediately, gave me several options, was very patient & kind ….like unbelievably compassionate and caring. went above and beyond for me. I felt so safe in her hands, & she did an amazing job. Finally got my endo diagnosis after 15 years. I cant recommend her enough.
I would look into Dr Shanti Mohling & her partner too Dr Fogelson. their instagrams & youtube videos showed me and my family that they really care and how skilled they were. Just as compassionate, if not more in person. Dr Shanti Mohling is the best doctor ive ever had & did amazing. Even showed me video of my surgery after. Like how skilled & confident do you have to be to be able to video your work & show the patient? My family and i are super impressed by it. I really dont have any regrets going to her, i only wish i couldve discovered her sooner.
Dr Shanti Mohling & her partner Dr Nicholas Fogelson. Id recommend watching their informative videos on their instagrams, & some of their surgeries or explanations are on youtube as well. My whole family is so happy with the entire experience & feel it was well worth the effort to travel there & see them. First time ive been validated & heard & their skill level knocked it out of the park.
I second going to Shanti Mohling. she is the best, hands down. she was so compassionate and beyond helpful. her skill impressed me. i have no regrets traveling to her.
I would check Dr Shanti Mohling and Dr Nicholas Fogelson in Portland. They have instagrams with their surgery videos and youtube too. I saw Dr Mohling and she was truly amazing. Super compassionate and really went above and beyond for me.
I would check iCareBetter, their list has surgeons who have had their surgeries reviewed and checked if they are actually skilled.
I went to see Dr Shanti Mohling in Portland from that list, & i had checked out her instagram, and i was NOT disappointed. Everything she dif was above and beyond, super compassionate. even solved my butt pain.
Believed me about my excessive bleeding, immediately suggested Adenomyosis & asked if thats what i thought, since she could tell i did a bunch of research. the only doctor to not dismiss me, and believed me. Got my surgery moved up, helped with my insurance personally. Found my family when my surgery was over, explained to them everything and gave me the hysterectomy i wanted so bad.
No more bc pills, no more excessive bleeding to the point of anemia. (quite literally. at the hospital before my surgery they took bloodwork, and it came up as anemic. finally proving my point once again.) no more cramps that were so insane. no more bleeding for 8 months straight. the butt pain i had for at least 3 years, gone. (ok it was gone for about 2 months, and since then it only comes back very faint & not often, when before it was 24/7. i can totally tell her skill level. im not joking. )
Literally no regrets with Dr Shanti Mohling in portland. 8 months post op, she amazed me just doing to exam. found stuff all my other doctors didnt. amazing compassion and kindness, went above and beyond.
Totally feel this. Took me 15 years of getting pushed off or denied or told to wait. Literally finally got my lap 10 months ago at age 27.
I had to go out of state, to Portland. I saw Dr Shanti Mohling. I highly highly recommend her. She was amazing above and beyond. She also completely believed me right away, was like “wait so are u thinking adenomyosis??” and i said yeah and she was like!! lets go check! Saw signs of it on her own ultrasound she performed and i made it clear i wanted a hysterectomy as well as endo excision. She did it and showed me the video of the surgery. found stage 2 endo.
I flew to Portland to see a specialist, best thing i ever did. i booked a ticket there that i could change the return date if i wanted. I went to meet in person, instead of a phone or zoom call which i could have done but there was a wait & i was already planning on flying there & getting this surgery. I was able to ask even tho they usually had surgeries booked out 2 or 3 months later, if they could possibly squeeze me in as soon as possible, that month (bc i would still be in town for a whole month.) She was amazing & said yes if her assistant talked to the hospital and they let us have a surgery slot, she would do it for me even on a day she doesnt usually do surgery. they emailed me back several days later that the hospital said we could do it later that month. i want to say it was maybe 4 or 5 weeks after my consult. (it was actually the date of my flight home, but my family had planned on staying if possible, so we just moved the flight to go home like 10 days later. Not the most ideal lol but certainly not the worst. i had no complaints. also super happy with the outcome. Dr Shanti Mohling was the best doctor ever! So so so grateful she squeezed me in & it changed my life.
Im so so glad i didnt do my regular gyn even tho she works with the “top” surgeon in my city, he isnt actually a true endo specialist. i didnt like some red flags i was hearing & making me wait so long and brushing me off bc i didnt have obvious signs. I later found comments & some messaged me with the bad experiences they had with them bc they had difficult cases. the “top” surgeon guy did 3 surgeries on a woman & only then complained to her that he couldnt do anything more for her it was too difficult. i dont like the gaslighting & that he couldnt admit that he wasnt a specialist the FIRST time. idk so many red flags. They also kept stringing me along, promising yeah yeah we will do a lap if you want, but later. lets wait this out, oh okay something is actually wrong with you, but first before a lap lets do a d&c & scrape around your tender uterus & see what happens….
i was even advised to do my first surgery with a local gyn, get pics & then wait for a better specialist later down the line. i know others dont have the privilege of a choice due to many circumstances & insurance & other crap, but i didnt want to have multiple surgeries if i could avoid it. I was able to fly out of state (portland) to see an endo specialist. A WORLD of difference. Dr Shanti Mohling believed me right away, came to the same conclusions as me, had the most compassion ive ever seen in a doctor, & had amazing knowledge. even upon exam & ultrasound she did herself she found markers of endo & adeno & could tell how much pain i was in. went above and beyond. squeezed me in for surgery a month later & i had no doubts that she would do the best she or anyone possibly could. she took pictures and video, found stage 2 endo. even my butt pain was gone. i seemed to have difficult endo, some areas almost impossible for me to see, but she checked everywhere. i wasnt nervous the morning of, i was excited. i have no regrets, i recovered so well. id go to her again if i have to. she also does her surgeries at the nicest hospital ive ever been to, my local city’s hospitals are awful. the portland hospital was so on top of things, organized, clean and really kind. 100/10 experience.
My family did research too bc a lot of people will call themselves endo specialists and they arent. or many suggest n*ncys nook, & ive read much that there are plenty on that list that arent true specialists either. I know we liked looking at & chose from iCareBetter ….they have been vetted thru their surgery videos i guess. I highly recommend Dr Shanti Mohling in portland.
Im so so sorry thats awful!!! youve been through so much!
I would highly recommend Dr Shanti Mohling in Portland Oregon. i cant recommend her enough. She was beyond amazing. She is super caring and empathetic too. You can check her vids on instagram and youtube of some of her surgeries, i even watched the video of my own surgery and im still so impressed by how much of a pro she is. I hope you are able to at least do a phonecall or zoom call with her to see what she says.
Also, nook is not the most reliable source, i recommend using the iCareBetter list (at least i hope its better) thats how i ended up going with Dr Mohling. the list shows surgeon specialists that have their surgery videos vetted and checked if they are actually an endo specialist.
i would like to suggest looking at Dr Shanti Mohling in Portland oregon’s instagram & youtube. i love the way she explains endo and surgeries and more. she shows her surgery videos and a few on youtube. (The endo specialist she works with, Dr Nicholas Fogelson, also has a great informative instagram and answers questions on youtube too.)
I chose to fly out of the state to see her, and i was hoping she would be as kind and compassionate and SKILLED as her videos, and SHE WAS. she was amazing, hugged me, was so so kind and considerate. felt bad for me with all the pain i had, BELIEVED ME…. loved her work on my surgery, i could tell leaving the hospital how well she did. she went above and beyond. i dont have any regrets. (other than i wish i lived in that state and could see only her or couldve found her sooner lol)
if anything, like i said check her vids out, might help with some choices or show you someone to compare other doctors with to see if they seem skilled or compassionate.
And check her website/call to see if you can do a phone or zoom consultation at least. i feel like she gave me the best options & then heard me with what i wanted and helped make it happen.
I felt unsure with his videos.
I would totally recommend looking into Dr Shanti Mohling (and the surgeon that works at her practice also has really good videos and explanations) check her instagram and on youtube it has a few surgery videos too.
I just really loved how it seemed like she believed her patients right away, and cared, and that she seemed to know a lot about endo. I like that they both share their surgery videos not to brag and say they are the best but in my opinion it shows their skill.
I flew out of state to see her and do a consultation and worried she wouldnt be as great as she seems in her videos, but she was. like really blew me away with her compassion hugs and immediately believed me, then did her own exam on me with ultrasound and everything and already could tell i probably had more endo on my left side with how much pain i was in (i didnt even notice or realize until she showed me.)
She went above and beyond trying to help me, did amazing on my surgery, i got to see video of that as well and i just have zero regrets with how kind and skilled she was and my results. the hospital she works with too was super kind and on top of things.
Yeah i just loved her i wish i lived closer, only regret was not finding her sooner. Again i suggest at least watching her videos and posts on instagram and consider doing a phone or zoom consultation to see what you think of her.
Oh im so glad, I really hope that your experience is as good as mine and that you get some relief!!
The time and money i wasted on doctors who just gaslit me and made me feel crazy and terrible ….still upsetting to think about.
Dr Mohling was nothing like them, and even hugged me reassuringly a few times, and found my family at the hospital, showed them pictures of my endo and hugged my crying sister (who was relieved i got answers finally) Like she is a gem.
Again i hope all goes well for you and you get treated better <3
Maybe you can schedule a consultation over the phone or zoom with endo specialists such as Dr Shanti Mohling or Nicholas Fogelson from Portland since they are actually endo specialists. they use robotic surgery and make small cuts. i dont know about the specifics of what you have
mine was Stage 2 and it was about 4 hours….
and doesnt sound as complicated as yours will be.
idk the specialist i saw and her partner were so skilled and confidant, im sure they would still preserve fertility while still excising the bowel and ureter area.
(my specialist showed me video of the weird stretchy endo around my ureter area and how she took the time to carefully excise it…)
I would suggest watching Dr Shanti Mohling (she was my surgeon in Portland) her instagram videos and a few youtube videos, and her partner Dr Nicholas Fogelson, his instagram and many youtube videos ….very educational, to me it proved how skilled they are, they confidently show their surgery videos and have been doing this for years so he even says that nothing is going to come as a surprise to him. At the very least check out their instagrams, and if u want check their website since it offers a free phone consult too..
I also had Dr Mohling (who works with Dr Fogelson) and i have no regrets going to her. i would literally only go to either of them. great experience, they are both actually like how they are on their instagrams, she was so so so kind and compassionate. they immediately believe you and i trust in their skill from their surgery videos. i watched my own surgery video and could see the level of care put into it. i also really liked the hospital they work with in portland, most on top of it hospital ive ever been to.
I had to travel out of the state for a true endo specialist. my sister did a ton of research and there is a lot of problematic stuff with n”ncys n””k. i cant say all of what my sister researched & the conclusions she came to but she really liked some specialists in portland oregon. i ended up checking out their social media, and i just really liked how they presented themselves, said and showed how they believed their patient’s pain & acknowledged the crazy gaslighting stuff other obgyn and other soecialists have said to patients. i liked how they showed videos of their actual surgeries and explained things.
i ended up flying to another state like i said and choosing to see Dr Shanti Mohling (so check her instagram posts and vids, and a few youtube vids for yourself is my recommendation.) and i worried in the back of my head “what if she isnt as nice and compassionate as she seems on her posts?? what if she doesnt help me??” well she was so so so so nice even more than her posts. i have no regrets about seeing her, she believed me, took my research seriously and my symptoms, didnt mock me that i came prepared, gave me options, really took time to listen, hugged me, performed the exam and ultrasounds herself & showed me how i was showing more signs of pain when she touched in my left side and confirmed it really seemed like endo and adeno. she listened to what i wanted in surgery, went above and beyond for me, reassured my family that she was super careful (i was anemic from blood loss from my nonstop period and didnt want blood in surgery) so she treated and did the surgery as i was her own daughter (careful she means?? i know i typed that funny)
found my family after surgery, showed them pictures of my endo confirmed. later showed me the video and explained different parts confirmed stage 2 endo. she truly was the best.
So my recommendation again is to research a lot. look up reviews of the surgeons you look into (i found some horrible reviews of the “top” endo guy in my state…so glad i didnt go to him)
At least watch Dr Shanti Mohling & her endo surgeon partner at their practice Dr Nicholas Fogelson instagrams and youtubes.
Its okay to cancel the surgery and to not go with that doctor. in fact its more than okay. doing a surgery is a lot to put your body thru, just for them to look around and say yep you got it, but not do anything about it.
Another thing to consider is if they arent even skilled enough to excise the endo, they are very very likely to not know what different endo types look like and are more likely to say “i didnt see anything, you dont have it.” many have went to drs claiming to be endo soecialists and they said they dont have any endo, later to go to a real endo specialist and its confirmed.
Really going with this doctor is a waste of time money and your health.
I would like to suggest looking thru Dr Shanti Mohling’s instagram. i loved her compassion and explanations so much, on her insta and youtube, and her endo partner Dr Nicholas Fogelsons instagram too….that i flew out of state to see her. She was just as compassionate and awesome in person, actually Knew what she was talking about and had a plan. I felt super confidant in her doing my surgery that i was happy and giddy that morning. I had no anxiety and knew she would give it her best. she found stage 2 endo, worked hard at cutting it out, found my family in the hospital, showed them pictures of my surgery with explanations written down and hugged my sister who was crying that i finally got confirmation after 15 years. 3 days later on the follow up (which i was doing significantly great) i saw the video of my surgery and saw how much she found endo in parts that to an untrained eye (some parts i couldnt even tell looked like endo) she found.
I hope you are able to cancel and do more research and find a good surgeon who cares about endo
i would suggest with a lot of research, a lot. endo is very much misunderstood, many gynos dont know the right stuff, updated research. even ones who claim to be endo specialists, arent and can gaslight you.
I would recommend checking out Dr Shanti Mohling’s instagram, she is the endo specialist i really liked her compassion and knowledge of endo. her surgery videos seemed really skilled and i just loved that she believes her patients pain. (she has a few youtube videos too.) I would also check her endo working partner Dr Nicholas Fogelson’s instagram and he has a lot of youtube videos too, in depth surgery questions as well. They really know their stuff, and arent arrogant. I even flew out of state to see her, & she was amazing and went above and beyond to help me. I recovered well from her surgery, my family and i are really impressed. I have no regrets in the effort to go see her, so glad i didnt continue down my local route of being gaslit and saw some pretty scary reviews of the endo specialist from where i am.
i traveled out of state to Portland Oregon to see Dr Shanti Mohling. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. i have no regrets.
I would 1000% recommend watching her videos and posts on her instagram (my sister did a ton of research and found her working partner Dr Fogelson’s youtube videos of his surgeries and q&a’s and then i checked his instagram posts too….so highly recommend watching his stuff too. and thats how i found her by checking their posts and their website. ) i really liked them both a lot based off their videos and explanations and how they just believe their patients, like you dont have to go on and on trying to convince them that you are in this much pain, only to be gaslit like so many doctors do. they totally believe your pain and seemed to really know their stuff. I really liked how compassionate she seemed in her videos too and so i booked a ticket and a initial visit and exam (you can totally call and ask for a free phone call consult or zoom i think on their website)
I was a little nervous as i am before all doctor appointments now, but every video of theirs had put me at ease and i just hoped she would be as compassionate and great as she seemed on her posts. well, she WAS! she went above and beyond for me, believed me right away, was on the same page, didnt belittle me for having come super prepared. she did what she could to help me and catered to my preferences and what i actually wanted. she hugged me. she felt so bad i was in an insane amount of pain during the exam (and then told me stuff i didnt know or realize. like “do you realize you are in way more pain when i feel on your left side? i bet theres more endo on your left.” and then she showed me, and i was in so much i didnt even put that together but she was right.) she was amazing what she could tell even before surgery.
I felt super safe in her hands. i was so confident and happy with her as my surgeon i wasnt even nervous the morning of and was giddy and excited to finally have answers and a hysterectomy after 15 years of being gaslit.
After my surgery, she found my family in the hospital, showed them printed out pictures of the endo she found. stage 2. walked them thru it, and hugged my crying sister who was happy for me to have answers and get excision surgery. I saw the video of my surgery a few days later on follow up and there were a few spots i could clearly tell were endo, and there were areas she was explaining were endo that i couldnt tell (endo is so tricky you really need a true expert!!) like around my ureter area, the skin was almost sticking to the ureter and being weird and she was like im certain that was endo bc the skin(flesh ?? idk the words) shouldnt have felt like that. and she was going on her expertise of the robot.
with how bad my health is and how weak i am in general, and then even moreso because i was bleeding for 8 months on birth control because of adenomyosis…..im shocked at how well i was doing after surgery. like the next day….i was walking around. the next day i showered and i felt fine, no need to even use the shower chair. (i will say on day 6 is when it hit me and i had a bad day of body aches. ….and with my other chronic health conditions i have had to take it super easy and rested a ton this year but i also have a sleeping disorder….sooooooo with what i can tell based on the surgery and my incision recovery and how i wasnt in pain in the surgery spots WOW im still impressed with her. ) i hope what i wrote made sense. I of course am a believer that endo comes back, and i believe that doctors even experts can only do so much, but i think she did the best that anyone could have done, im super happy with the surgery. I would go back to see her again.
another thing to add, i love the hospital too that Dr Mohling and Fogelson work out of, in portland. nicest cleanest hospital, best staff like insanely nice nurses and helpful people. most on top of it hospital. it was a great bonus because i just cared about having her as my surgeon but the hospital was so kind i would want to have any surgery there. i would never say that about any of my local hospitals or drs.
If anything, check her insta and youtube, and his if you can. Schedule a free consult over phone or zoom. its worth it, even to compare if you are debating over someone else.
I traveled from out of state at the end of 2022 to see Dr Shanti Mohling. her and her partners endo excision skills are top tier of you ask me. My advice would be at the very least check both of their instagrams and youtube channels to see how well they answer questions/commemts, they show clips of their surgeries and explain finding hard to see endo, and their complicated cases. Thats what motivated my sister and i to go to them. I have no regrets, Dr Mohling was as skilled and compassionate as her videos and she did my surgery amazing. Id go to her again. I even felt i wanted a hysterectomy at 27 (wanted it even younger too) because i felt i had adenomyosis and all other doctors dismissed me. Dr Mohling just listened to me and did what i wanted
Dr Shanti Mohling. i loved her. you can check out her instagram and youtube videos, i loved how compassionate and how skilled she was showing her surgery videos. she was even nicer in person, went above and beyond for me
what doctor did you see in portland? i flew out of state to go to oregon, for the specialist Dr Shanti Mohling. id recommend her a thousand times. her & her endo partner are very skilled & compassionate, and the hospital they worked with was the kindest & most competent hospital ive ever seen.
Id recommend Dr Shanti Mohling in portland oregon. i flew out of state to see her and was Not disappointed. she went above & beyond. my family and i were really impressed by her. she has an instagram & youtube with surgery videos, & her partner is very skilled too. if i have to have another endo surgery one day, id go to her again in a heartbeat.
he is not qualified and most likely wont even know what endo looks like, so he will gaslight you saying they found none. look up instagrams/youtube of Dr Shanti Mohling. i traveled out of state to portland oregon to see her, she was above and beyond amazing.
my period lasted 8 months or longer, i had to travel out of state to portland oregon to see an endo specialist. Dr Shanti Mohling (look up her instagram & youtube & her partners) was beyond helpful and amazing, & she immediately believed me & agreed i could have adenomyosis. she removed my endo and did everything i asked.
Patient 5Had SurgeryPositive56 postslaparoscopic excision surgery (endo confirmed stage 2, excision including rectal shaving)hysterectomy (partial, ovaries retained)
“Dr. Mohling performed laparoscopic excision (stage 2 endo confirmed, including a piece on rectum) plus hysterectomy. Patient reports butt pain gone after surgery (gone for ~2 months, then only very faint and infrequent vs prior 24/7), no more excessive bleeding, no more severe cramps. 8 months post-op and very happy. First doctor to believe and validate patient after 15 years. Believed patient about adenomyosis immediately. Helped move surgery date up and assisted with insurance personally. Show”

my sister and i are going to Portland, Oregon to see Dr Nicholas Fogelson and Dr Shanti Mohling.
Patient 7Had SurgeryPositive42 postslaparoscopy (first surgery, prior surgeon)excision surgery with Shanti Mohlinghysterectomy (requested, done concurrently with excision)
“Patient went from living in hell to pain-free. Symptom-free for 3.5 years. Mohling found endo in more places than prior surgeon missed, including bladder and diaphragm. Hysterectomy also performed concurrently. Recovery was surprisingly painless though fatiguing weeks 3-7. Cost approximately $6,000-$8,000 total with Blue Shield PPO partial coverage. I had excision with Dr. Shanti Mohling. I went from living in hell to being pain free! Feel normal and happy. She took it out and also gave me a hys”

who. should i go to - Ken Sinervo or Shanti Mohling?
who. should i go to - Ken Sinervo or Shanti Mohling?
Hi all,
I had one endo surgery last year through my health insurance but its baccccckkkkk and i want to find a specialist to do my next surgery so it will hopefully be my last.
does anyone have experience with either of these two?
i'm also thinking about a hysterectomy because i likely have adenomyosis according to my last surgeon and Ive heard it can grow outthrough the walls of the uterus onto other organs. i don't know if either of them do that or if it has to be a separate surgery.
thanks for sharing your experience? Do you mind sharing which dr. you saw? I am trying to find people who have seen Dr. Shanti Mohling because I am considering her.
Very specific- but anyone see Dr. Shanti Mohling with out of state BCBS coverage?
Very specific- but anyone see Dr. Shanti Mohling with out of state BCBS coverage?
I am in california amd i am trying to switch my healthcare to Blue Cross Blue Shield. hopefully it would still cover it out of network if it was out of state?
I am so sorry vfor what you have been through. Cruel and inhumane. I highly advise ditching your shitty obgyn.
As far as follow up, you have what is described as stage 4 endo. If you are financially able to and the pain ever returns, you should go to a specialist who can make sure to take everything out. I went to Shanti Mohling in Portland and she was awesome. For planning purposes, it's easiest to choose a specialist if you have a PPO, especially like blue cross/blue shield.
I have learned the hard way to always ditch a doctor if they don't believe me or don't seem inclined to want to investigate.
All of your anger is justified. I will send you healing vibes.
So you have biopsy results showing a confirmed case of Endo? I second the suggestion to ask them to formally document it in your chart that even though you have a prior diagnosis, they won't do a surgery. If that doesn't work definitely find a new doctor. You are absolutely right to think you have it. I'd really suggest findjng an exicision specialist who is also able to find and diagnose thoracic endo. If you have the funds i highly recommend Shanti Mohling in Portland, she is awesome and very thorough and found stuff my first surgeon missed, including some on my diaphragm . With someone like her you don't need a referral. Make a post asking for good docs in your area.
You are absolutely valid. I didn't birth control bc of concern over side effects . A great endo surgeon named Shanti Mohling just made a post on insta about why she doesn't require bc. Unfortunately new guidelines really push bc even though it isnt really a solution for a lot of ppl. Check out the Instagram endogirlsblog too.
My first lap I kind of lucked into bc I had a big fibroid that came back despite earlier broth control. It started getting a lot bigger so I was able to schedule surgery to get it taken out and the person said she would check for Endo at the same time. You might be able to do a similar thing if you have ovarian cysts too. The caveat is that you don't want just anyone looking for endo, you want someone who actually knows how to find it, ideally someone who specializes in excision surgery. Minimally invasive da Vinci robot specialists can be good bc their robots get magnified clear views of all the tissue.
I'd recommend starting a new post asking for suggestions of gyns in your area who would refer you to a surgeon even if you don't take birth control and surgeons in your area
Do you have an endocrinologist for your diabetes? Perhaps they could champion your cause with your gyno and say that there were heightened risks
I don't have it but I want you to know that some well regarded Endo specialists say there is no actual benefit to bc with regards to Endo. Found it comforting bc I didn't want to do bc for other reasons. Look up Shanti Mohling on Instagram she is a well regarded surgeon who posted about this recently
I would have episodes.tjat included high heart rate, shortness of breath, and intense abdominal pain. Usually on day 21 of my period and sometimes day6-14. Not sure how it connects to my Endo but it does. My vision also gets affected so for me it seems to be a type of migraine?. For what it's worth progesterone cream helps me chill it out, as does gabapentin, ibuprofen band a Chinese medicine herbal thing I take for racing piglet syndrome. I also had a patch of Endo on my diaphragm. Shout out to my surgeon Shanti Mohling for finding it.
I'd suggest persuing Chinese medicine if you can. It helped me a lot.
I just had surgery with Dr. Mohling and she is amazing. I can't speak to the stage 4 thing bc I'm not that far but she doesn't seem to really rely on hormonal suppression in the first place. I saw a post on her insta where she basically says it may be useful for some ppl but it doesn't slow progression. For her, the best treatment in all scenarios is removing the bad tissue. It's like treating cancer and the idea is if you take out all of the affected tissue it doesn't grow back. For what it's worth she was cheaper than Dr. Sinervo too. I paid her $4000 and I think I paid the hospital an additional $3000? A surgery that involved bowel or vats would probably cost more tho. She is super kind and awesome. Definitely recommend
So a couple things- Endo specialists are important precisely because they can remove everything. Treating it superficially will have little benefit. That being said, if the Endo specialist you are seeing thinks a stoma is likely, I'd suggest getting a second opinion. Some surgeons will do everything in their power to avoid a stoma, others won't. The specialist needs to work with a general surgeon for bowel cases so it often relates to who they work for.
Fwiw I went to Shanti Mohling and she tries very hard to avoid stomas and thinks its rarely necessary,
It makes sense to try to prevent a stoma. it doesn't make sense to try to prevent or control how much Endo the surgeon takes out.
A hysterectomy does not treat Endo and only old fashioned illinformed doctors think it does. See an actual Endo specialist like Shanti Mohling and they will give you better advice which is to get the Endo removed (not the uterus! Endo is lesions outside of the uterus so how would removing it help?!?)
This is the answer. Ideally someone who does laproscopic endo surgeries every week. Especially make sure it's someone who is familiar and comfortable with bladder excision which can be tricky (I had mine with Shanti Mohling who I love).
Make a separate post asking for recommendations in your area.
Also, pls know that most regular gynos know fuck all about Endo. I would take what they say with a grain of salt. Hell, a bunch of them think a hysterectomy is a cure which isn't how it works.
I had Endo so I went to an Endo specialist surgeon and asked if she would also do a hysterectomy at the same time and she agreed. Shanti Mohling in Portland, she did a great job. If you have reason to believe you have Endo I'd look for someone who does endo rxcisions
People do surgeries on minors all the time. I know my surgeon Shanti Mohling in Portland has done many. I'm so sorry you are going through this. I'd suggest you make a separate post and ask if anyone can recommend surgeons in your area who take your insurance. then reach out to those surgeons to see if their age is a deal breaker
I'm sorry for what you are going through.
I saw an amazing surgeon in Portland makes Shanti Mohling. It cost me about 7,000 but I imagine it would cost much more for someone without American insurance.
I have heard there is a really good Endo surgeon in Mexico but idk his name but I assume that would be way more affordable.
A shitty doctor will remove your colon bc that requires less skill. A good specialist can often do a bowel resection and avoid the need for a colostomy bag.
If I were you I would ask for the ovarian mass removed and ask them to just biopsy the colon for now so you can get more info
Again, sorry for what you are going through
I saw Dr. Mohling as well. She is the best. I had expensive blue shield PPO insurance. I think I paid around 4,000 to Dr Mohling up front and maybe another 4,000 to the hospital. My Endo wasn't as extensive although it was on my bladder and diaphragm and on the peritoneum. Also had a hysterectomy at the same time and was positive for adeno.
Where are you located? Maybe ppl here can help you find a doctor who will be more kind and actually willing to help you. My surgeon was Shanti Mohling. It was expensive but if that is possible for you she could help.
As far as lowering your estrogen, there are actually supplements that can do that. I took milk thistle plus NAC, 1 pill of each 2x day. . I would suggest doing it under the care of a naturopathic doctor so they can make sure your estrogen doesn't get too low bc that can cause issues as well. I saw a naturopath named saru bala. Supplements controlled my crazy fibroid bleeding for years before I got surgery. It was really effective. I use da Vinci labs milk thistle and pure encapsulations NAC. If you can't do birth control this is worth a try.
God I'm so sorry. I hope you are able to find things that work and I hope that during your hysterectomy they can get all of the remaining stuff out. I hope you can find a really really good surgeon. Unfortunately the quality of the surgeon matters a lot. I saw Dr. Shanti Mohling in Portland and she is great.
Also i would suggest you go to a specialist who can tackle your thoracic Endo. If it's up there it's not a good idea to let it keep growing. I know Shanti Mohling teams up with thoracic doctors to tackle it and so does dr. Sinervo. I go to them for excision plus hysterectomy.
Shanti Mohling. I think I had just a patch on my diaphragm, not too deep. She took from there and my bladder and cul de sac and did a hysterectomy as well for adenomyosis (I had requested this). It was all laproscopic and recovery was shockingly painless, although I was super fatigued weeks 3-7
Mine was around 7,000 I think. Shanti Mohling in Portland. Tbh my parents helped me.
I had considered going to sinervo but I heard of ppl getting charged way more so I went to Mohling and she was excellent
After my first lap, when symptoms came back I had a second surgery, this time witb a specialist, who found a very thin, hard to see layee of endo on my bladder. She took it out and also gave me a hysterectomy and now I have no symptoms. Doctors name was Shanti Mohling. In addition to bladder cramping and difficulty fully emptying bladder, the bladder Endo felt like this constant burning feeling that was super intense right to the left of my pubic bone.
Definitely not your only option. I know for a fact that my surgeon Shanti Mohling will do hysterectomies on ppl, even young ppl. She also doesn't recommend menopause inducing meds.
I second the idea of approaching from multiple modalities. If one of your problem areas is during your period, I highly recommend red raspberry leaf tea. get it in bulk, take a handful each day and steep it covered in boiling water for 15 mins. Do this every day of your period and then triple it during your actual period. It made my cramps go from a 10 to a 4. I still toom ibuprofen of course, but not as much.
For what it's worth, my surgeon, Dr. Shanti Mohling, has a great Instagram account and she posted the other day that she never pushes hormonal birth control for Endo bc according to her there are no concrete studies saying that it actually works. She uses surgical means to remove the Endo.
While my naturopath helped my cramps a lot, and helped the Endo symptoms chill out a little bit, the truth is that nothing realmy hekped me until I had surgery with a specialist, so before you oay a ton of money, thats my two cents.
Also a lot of ppl find pt helpful
Find an Endo bladder specialist if possible. Shanti Mohling did surgery on my bladder, idk if she is a specialist on that per se, but sje is an Endo specialist and she rocks . it sounds like these surgeons are saying it can't be done simply bc it's out of their expertise
Shanti Mohling is experienced in doing complex Endo. She has a surgeon she partners with for thoracic Endo. She took mine off my diaphragm. She is way cheaper than Ken sinervo and very kind and experienced. When she books appointments she always has a thoracic surgeon available if it has gone past the diaphragm to the lung
To be clear though, it's not like the bone damage waits to start until 24 months. It's that by then it's built up enough cumulative damage that it could have serious side effects. But there may be significant damage long before then. For what it's worth, my surgeon (Shanti Mohling) says she NEVER puts people on these meds bc they cause damage and there isn't even a single study shown positive impact on Endo. Personally I wouldn't touch those meds
Oh definitely don't go to anyone who spends 30 mins . While this slightly further (Portland), I have the highest priasws for Shanti Mohling who is absolutely amazing . I came up from California to see her and it was covered under my blue shield.i probably paid about $5 k in terms of money to her and hospital co pays.
I had surgery with Lily tan in sf. She did find some Endo and I did have relied for nine months, but after nine months I had a second surgery (switched to blue shield) with Shanti Mohling of Portland who found it in many more places
I'm so sorry to hear this! My biggest advice is to see an endometriosis specialist if you ever need surgery again. You absolutely want someone in there who has seen cases like that before and who can find and excise as much as possible. I saw Shanti Mohling in Portland and she is amazing. Even if you have to travel to see an expert, trust me when I say you will be setting yourself up for the best possible outcomes.
I had the BEST experience with Shanti Mohling in Portland. She is so skilled and she is so amazing. I recommend her. She is careful and thorough and found the bladder and diaphrmatic endo my other doc missed.
I had a hysterectomy with her at the same time (I asked for it) for adenomyosis and it has been life changing
Could be referred pain, or it could be Endo above your diaphragm. I'd suggest asking for recs in your area to find specialized Endo surgeons who can treat this. I saw Shanti Mohling who is skilled and experienced in finding endo in diaphragm (she found mine) and also partners with thoracic surgeons who can find it above the diaphragm if need be
So my insurance was blue shield PPO and it covered a significant amount of it. I think with co paysto hospital and the amount I paid to Mohling it was probably about 6 or 7 after all was said and done. Blue shield covered most of the hospital stuff but I had to pay a percentage which I think was about 3,000, and I think I had to pay mohling 4,000, but she later refunded me 1,500 bc she got some from my insurance.
Based on the fact that a friend was initially billed 90k, I elected not to pursue surgery with him. I had surgery with Dr. Shanti mohling and it was super successful and I have been symptom free for over two years and counting since. And it only cost me less than $8j
Hi, I have never tried to conceive so I can't speak to this, but I do highly recommend Dr. Mohling. I can't remember why I wrote this particular comment but maybe I had recently heard about some of her successes from Instagram or meeting her or something. To be honest this is a good question for her. She is excellent and I've been symptom free for 3.5 years

I second this- Dr.Mohling. She’s out of my staying out of my network but after having poor success with the doctors in my area and feeling like she was the only one that was skilled enough that I would trust to touch my body and when I drove up for the in person consult she was incredible. She was able to see things on my pelvic ultrasound she did that everybody else missed. I am having a surgery with her December 8. Endometriosis excision and distract me. Going to try to spare my left ovary. The right one seems to be in pretty bad shape. They have a pretty great website with some wonderful articles and videos too.
I hear you on being at a network. I worked my ass off all year to be able to afford my out of network out-of-pocket cost for them. The good news is they do have lawyers on board to get as much as they can out of your insurance so although the initial cost seems expensive I know I won’t pay the entire thing. I don’t look at them as a for profit only business. Unfortunately I see the insurance companies as not taking women’s health serious enough that they’re not paying providers what they’re worth for their time and their effort and their skill.
Maybe one day it will be different.
One day when I’m rolling in the $$$ I’d love to give money to all these specialist out of Netwerk so they can gift a surgery to those that can’t afford it.
Hi- I have my surgery scheduled with Dr. Mohling Dec 8. Wondering how your surgery and recovery went? She is not in my network but I have been saving and searching for someone I could trust. I felt really positive about her when we had our consult.
Thank you so much for sharing a bit of your story with me. Also really happy for you getting your life back. I WANT that. I’m newly 36 and feel like I’m not ready to live out the rest of my life with this constant pain.
We may be a bit more similar than most. I’ll be getting what you got plus the removal of my right ovary because from the ultrasound she did she wasn’t entirely sure that that could be preserved but the left one she’s going to try to save. My cherry on top is the gallbladder. Her co-surgeon that’s doing the vats procedure had me do a gallbladder scan because of my pain patterns and turns out I have a very hyperactive gallbladder so the gallbladder might be going too. I’m a little concerned with all that is going but both Dr. Mohling and Dr. Watkins assured me it is something that has been done before.
I just had my lap Endo Excision and Hysto with Dr. Mohling 12/8. She is INCREDIBLY skilled and such a lovely human being. I haven’t watched my video yet but the pics she gave me right after surgery was so validating- I self diagnosed with Diaphragm Endo and sure enough one of my pics shows a spot of my diaphragm.
It is worth the time and money for a specialist. My recovery is going remarkably well so far- I am so surprised.
Not sure if you have Instagram. It’s a hold over for me so I could watch my Doctors surgical videos on Endo. If you so look up Ashanti Mohling- she has some Diaphragm surgical videos on her page and they are pretty recent. Also her partner Dr. Nicholas Foggelson has a YouTube channel and I think there might be a video there too.
I realize you might not want to watch surgical videos- for me seeing and hearing things explained was really informing and powerful. I had a spot on the abdominal side of my Diaphragm that I had removed by Dr. Mohling earlier this month. Fortunately it didn’t appear deep so she did not have to go all the way through.
It may be complex for most but there are specialist out there that know what they are doing and feel confident in their skills.
It’s worth a look imo
I wish you all the luck possible in finding answers and relief.
Congratulations for finally getting answers and having an incredible surgical team. I was there receiving wonderful care from Dr.Mohling 12/8. She’s miraculous and SO kind.
Best wishes with recovery!
Portland, Oregon.
Dr. Mohling did my surgery 12/8/2022- she is phenomenal. I saw 7 or 8 Docs before I finally went look out of network and out of state.
Well worth the drive to Portland for a highly skilled Doctor who also happens to be a wonderful human being.
Just want to echo how phenomenal Dr.Mohling is. I traveled from Southern California to be treated by her in Dec 2022.
I agree not having to bleed every month is amazing.
Your neighbor to the South (Portland Oregon) has a phenomenal pelvic pain surgical specialist- Dr. Shanti Mohling. I traveled from south CA to be treated by her after MANY dismissive doctors in my area. Well worth it. I wouldn’t trust anyone else with surgery and will go back to her if I need too. Look her up on IG if you have social media. She is a big advocate and educator.
I love her.
Before my surgery to diagnosis and treat Endo and possible Adeno I had-
Colonoscopy - no findings other than 2 small internal hemorrhoids (she also was a rude terrible doctor)
SIBO Test - from same doc above, testing was u reliable and although I tested positive I did not treat because I didn’t trust the result and the way the test was done. I am getting a new SIBO test next month with the new GI which sounds reliable.
Enteroscopy - new GI found evidence of previous mild gastritis and negative for SMA (compression)
Stool Test - deficient in beneficial bacteria, evidence of low stomach acid
Celiac Test - negative
HIDA Test - ordered by cosurgeon and was positive for hyperkinetic
Heavy Metal Test - got some shit to take care of here
MRI - possible SMA and evidence of Endometriomas both ovaries
CT with contrast - evidence of Endometriomas both ovaries
Abdominal Ultrasounds - no findings
Transvaginal Ultrasounds - evidence of Endometriomas both ovaries, septate uterus
Hernia Ultrasound - no findings
Mammogram - no findings
Tons of bloodwork
I did all of these tests from August 2020 and October 2022. Surgery was Dec 2022 - radical Endo Excision (made it all the way to the bottom side of my Diaphragm), Total Hysterectomy (found a fibroid and mild adenomyosis), Cystectomy right ovary, left oophorectomy (to infiltrated by Endo to save), Cholecystectomy, tested for IC (negative)
My pelvic pain feels mostly resolved. Have some occasional right ovary pain. Fatigue is way better and although I’m still recovering I feel like I can tolerate more physical activity without being wiped out. GI still feels like something is off - SIBO Test next month will be helpful to treat or tule out. My main complaint is bloating but it feels less intense than before surgery.
I tried to investigate everything before eventual surgery. For me it was inevitable - I needed surgery. The inflammation for decades wreaked havoc internally. It was a hard journey. I finally researched a specialist (out of state) and worked my ass off all year to save for the surgery. It was worth it and I wish I did it sooner. She took video and pictures. Happy to share pictures if anyone is into that sorta thing or a specialist rec- Dr. Shanti Mohling in Portland, Oregon. She is exceptional and thorough.
I know it’s not possible for everyone to access a specialists but I researched a specialist I felt was competent, worked my ass off and saved my money to be treated by her. It was never a battle to get her to believe me- our consult was more about what options for treatment she could provide and what we thought would give me the best outcomes. It wasn’t easy and it took me a few solid years and more than a dozen different types of doctors before I had enough of being dismissed.
Dr. Shanti Mohling in Portland, Oregon was my specialist. She is incredible and has a very educational Instagram.
I was told about this after my surgery and it just so happens my doc was on there- Dr. Mohling. She is a life saver. I highly recommend her if you are able to see her. I had to go out of state for her but I didn’t trust anyone else with my body.
I’d research the doctors you think you might want to see. Most of the specialists have some sort of online presence and that might help you get a feel for them. I also searched my doc on this and the other Endometriosis board to get patient reviews.
Dr. Shanti Mohling is Oregon will investigate diaphragm and thoracic Endo along with abdomen and pelvis. She is incredible. Unfortunately she does not take insurance HOWEVER she has a lawyer for all of her cases and will get as much out of your insurance co and she can.
Dr. Mohling at NWEndometriosis is incredible- they only specialists I would let do my surgery after years of looking and decades of being dismissed. I hear her partner Dr. Foggelson is also wonderful.
Save some money and go see Dr.Mohling in Portland. Even with airfare and hotel she would be less than 100k
And I’ll serious, honest I wish you luck. I was jerked around by doctors in my state and finally bit. The bullet worked my ass off for a year to say about the money for surgery with Dr. Mohling. It was a big deal and not fun to drive through multiple states to get to her, but worth every penny. She’s incredible.
Only thing that showed in my ultrasounds, CT and MRI was ovarian cysts (possibly Endometrioma). Tired of that “healthy” report because there was nothing “remarkable”.
Finally found Dr.Mohling- had my lap and she found DIE, Endo throughout my pelvis, on my right ureter and bottom side of my diaphragm.
Don’t listen to this doctor. Don’t give up. You are worth getting quality care from a doctor that understands this disease.
Don’t give up.
I had my surgery with Dr.Fogelsons working partner Dr.Mohling. The hospital and staff were phenomenal in Oregon. If Dr.Mohling retired and I need another surgery I’d at the least have an in person consult and exam with Dr.Fogelson. They also employees a lawyer who helps your case with your insurance company - which was a huge help and stress relief for me personally. Felt like a high standard of care after a long road of being treated poorly.
Best of luck in your decision making.

Lastly, I was recently shared a petition that is deeply important to me and I am asking for you to consider signing this petition for a National Class Action Endometriosis Investigation.
We would like to bring to your attention the plight of the 8-10 million American citizens who suffer from Endometriosis, a devastating disease which we believe has been left out of these health care law enforcements. Discrimination of race and gender is risking the lives of patients daily. Including the practice of outdated, publicly debunked principles also causing harm daily. Patients are being systematically denied lifesaving & preventative medical treatments due to discriminatory actions and policies. This constitutes violations of civil rights to an entire category of citizens supposed to be protected.

Adding here to say Dr. Shanti Mohling was a life saver for me. I drove from Southern CA to have her treat me because I was impressed with her high level of skill and bed side manner. She is very active in the Endometriosis community - she chairs the Endometriosis special interest group and patient advocacy panel for the AAGL American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
She is worth every penny and has a lawyer of staff to submit your case/claim to your insurance.
She takes video and pictures of her surgeries and this is all she does - she is not doing any general OBGYN care - her entire practice is complex cases.
Lastly - where she does the surgery at Legacy Good Samaritan in Portland was exceptional the two times I was there for surgery - from the people that admit you, nurses and anesthesiologist are wonderful.
Hi 👋🏻 here to say yes and it is not as rare as people think. I had Endo on the bottom side of my diaphragm that was treated during my first surgery by a specialist who does complex cases like it all the time. I also had what felt like breathing changes and major changes in my capacity to do anything physical (like anything more than walking and housework was VERY challenging).
Check out Dr.Binghams work www.extrapelvicnotrare.com
Also Dr.Shanti Mohling - she has an extensive Instagram where she talks all about Endo on the diaphragm and in the thoracic cavity.
Does your OB work with co surgeons? Typically a general or thoracic surgeon is needed alongside your doc for these types of surgery.
At the very least make sure she is taking photos of everything even if she isn’t seeing anything. And that she moves the liver aside to look around. Even better if she can do a video. That way you have documentation in the event you need to see another specialist.
“excellent - significant improvement, validated pain, patient drives 2.5-3 hours for care and plans to return She gave me my life back after I fought for diagnosis for 19 years and then had ablation that made everything worse. She performed my excision, appendectomy, salpingectomy and hysterectomy this past October. I had stage 3 endo and adenomyosis. She is a breathe of fresh air when it comes to doctors. I've never had a doctor as kind and supportive as her.”

I’ve seen this doctor. He does not know enough about endo. He removed my IUD even though I told him I didn’t want it removed. He said he was going to make sure it was properly in place, then just decided he would take it out, even after I told him no. He also did a diagnostic lap on me and “couldn’t find” endo. I’m not convinced he knew what he was looking for. I highly recommend Dr Shanti Mohling with Northwest Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery. She is incredible, compassionate, and so helpful. She also specializes in excision surgery.
Dr Shanti Mohling, Nicholas Foglesons co-physician, Northwest Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery. I see Dr Mohling and she is absolutely incredible. Well worth the drive to Portland. I just had excision surgery done by her three weeks ago. She texted me the day after and again a few days after to make sure I was recovering ok. Her medical assistant Rennie is amazing too! I email with any questions about recovery that I have and she responds very quickly. I highly recommend her if you’re looking for an excision specialist and a doctor who will validate you and your pain, address all of your concerns, and be so sweet and loving along the way.
Dr Fogelsons practice does accept insurance, they may just be out of network. I see Dr Mohling, who’s a part of Dr Fogelsons practice and that’s how we were able to get insurance to cover some of my bills from them and to cover most of my hospital bills from my excision and hysterectomy surgery.
Second this! Doctor Mohling is amazing!! She gave me my life back after I fought for diagnosis for 19 years and then had ablation that made everything worse (this was before I knew about excision). I drive 2.5 hours to see her.
Shanti Mohling is incredible. She is kind, sweet, sympathetic and validating. She performed my excision, appendectomy, salpingectomy and hysterectomy this past October. I had stage 3 endo and adenomyosis. She is a breathe of fresh air when it comes to doctors. I’ve never had a doctor as kind and supportive as her. She is also very knowledgeable about endo, checks the entire abdomen thoroughly, including the diaphragm and behind the liver. I highly, highly recommend her.
I see Dr Mohling. I have Aetna insurance and it was out of network, but our insurance still covered a lot. She is also considered out of state for me, I’m in Washington, and we didn’t have any issues working with insurance.
I see Dr Mohling too! After a similar experience to yours. She is a Godsend! Such an incredible person and surgeon! The drive from WA is worth it just for the kindness and concern she shows when validating symptoms.
Dr Mohling performed my excision, hysterectomy, salpingectomy and appendectomy this past October. She is AMAZING! She’s incredibly kind and caring. I’ve never had a doctor treat me so nicely. Because of Covid, my husband couldn’t come into the hospital with me, she knew I was upset about that, so she gave me a hug before taking me to the OR and then held my hand while the anesthesiologist started the anesthesia. She did not recommend any form of hormones for me, but I also would not have agreed to take any. I had severe adenomyosis and Stage 3 endo at the time of surgery. I’ve since been upgraded to stage 4 since developing an endometrioma on one of my ovaries. We are monitoring it for now. I email her with questions and concerns and she always responds, still very kind and caring. She’s out of state and a 3 hour drive for me, and I had to have my surgery at her hospital out of state, but it was worth it and I’ll do it again without hesitation to be able to have her perform my next surgery.
I see Dr Mohling, she is Dr Fogelsons partner. She did my excision and hysterectomy last year. They are both incredible doctors, very kind and caring. I can’t recommend Them enough
I second this! I drove down to Portland from Washington just to see Dr Mohling and have her do my hysterectomy and excision. She is an incredible doctor and so very kind.
Dr Shanti Mohling and Dr Nicholas Folgelson are wonderful doctors that both specialize in endo excision. They are partners at Northwest Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery. Dr Mohling did my excision and hysterectomy last year, she was amazing.
Have you looked at Dr Nicholas Fogelson or Dr Shanti Mohling with northwest endometriosis and pelvic surgery? They’re partners, located in Portland. I don’t know if they work with Kaiser, but they worked with my Aetna insurance and they are incredible doctors who really know what they’re doing
Mine was last year in October. I had complete excision of endo, an appendectomy, salpingectomy and hysterectomy all at the same time, so my recovery may look different than yours. Dr Mohling is a wonderful, amazing person and a very skilled surgeon. Recovery has gone well and without any complications. She gave me my life back. I have stage 4 endo and I had severe adenomyosis which was the reason for the hysterectomy. My appendix was not affected by endo, but she recommended removal because it’s very common for endo to take over the appendix and it can turn cancerous, most of my worst pain and cyst ruptured are also on my right side, so I always had the concern of not knowing if it was a cyst rupture or appendicitis, so I agreed and let her remove it. I’m glad I did.
Yes!! Dr Mohling is the best! She gave me my hysterectomy and excision at 31 years old, after I told her I had been begging for one since I was 24. Turns out I had severe adenomyosis in addition to stage 4 endo.
OP, It sounds like your surgeon may not be an excision specialist, if that is the case you should consider getting another opinion by an excision specialist. You definitely have other options than medication induced menopause!!
I second this!! Dr Mohling is also my specialist and I found her via icarebetter. My husband and I will be moving across the country in a few years, and I’ll use their site again to find my next specialist. I may also decide I’m willing to fly cross-country to see continue to see Dr Mohling—she’s that good!
I saw Dr Mohling for my excision and hysterectomy in October 2021. She is incredible! I had 2 other surgeries for endo prior to finding her and they were terrible compared to my experience with her. She listened to me thoroughly, validated my pain and told me all the risks as well as the benefits of moving forward with the surgery I was requesting. She let me decide how I wanted to proceed with surgery, this was very empowering for me. It’s my body, I should be able to decide what I do and do not want, a doctor should not be telling me I can’t do something just because they don’t like it (I had been requesting a hysterectomy for 5-8 years by the time I found Dr Mohling and she was the first person to hear me out and tell me she would do it, if I wanted it). I was diagnosed by her with Stage 4 endo and adenomyosis. She excised all endo, performed a hysterectomy, salpingectomy and appendectomy. I requested the appendectomy and she agreed to do it; I have a multi-cystic right ovary and have had too many scares wondering if it was appendicitis or a cyst rupture. She is incredibly kind and caring towards her patients. I’ll be seeing her again when the time comes for another surgery (I kept both ovaries, but I will have to have the right one removed sooner than later due to an endometrioma)
Dr Shanti Mohling or Dr Nicholas Fogelson (they work together) Northwest Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery. My surgery was with Dr Mohling, almost 2 years ago. I have stage 4 endo and had severe adenomyosis. I had been suffering from endo for 19 years and adenomyosis for I am not sure how long, but she validated my pain, listened and was empathetic to everything I said and is so incredibly kind and caring. I’ve never seen a better doctor. I was 31 at the time, she agreed to do my hysterectomy at the time of my excision surgery. I feel so much better than I did before my surgery and I will go to her again when the time comes for another surgery for endo.
I honestly don’t remember and have no idea what our plan covered. We have switched insurance since then. I do know that a good portion of the hospital bill was covered, I want to say the hospital was considered “in network”, and some of the bill from Dr Mohling was covered, but I don’t remember how much. Sorry I couldn’t be much more helpful than that, my surgery was 2 years ago and everything was pretty much a fog around that time
Dr Shanti Mohling and Dr Nicholas Fogelson. They’re in Portland, but worth the drive. Dr Mohling is amazing, knowledgeable, and so very kind. Best doctor I’be ever seen. I’ve had two surgeries with her and she is an excellent surgeon.
“Third surgery (October 2021). Diagnosed stage 3/4 endo and severe adenomyosis. Performed complete excision, hysterectomy, salpingectomy, appendectomy. Patient drove 2.5–3 hours from Washington. Recovery went well without complications. Patient subsequently developed endometrioma on right ovary being monitored. Patient plans to return for future surgery. Described as incredibly kind, compassionate, validated pain, listened thoroughly, texted day after surgery to check recovery. She gave me my lif”

Honestly I'd always had relatively painful periods and bad Irritable Bowel Syndrome around my periods, but that seemed "normal". Then a few years ago when I was in college I started having horrible nausea. Like, I virtually couldn't eat for a year. I lost so much weight and kept getting misdiagnosed with an eating disorder and severe anxiety. I do have severe anxiety, so I thought that was the cause. But then my periods got worse and worse and I started having pain with sex, and that's when I finally realized I was really sick. I was so fatigued all the time, and I had neverending bleeding and cramps even when I was supposed to be done with my period.
I tried every type of birth control, including a Nexplanon implant *and* oral birth control at the same time. Even with prescription dose ibuprofen it wasn't enough to manage my symptoms. Also, the birth control made my IBS symptoms worse and my anxiety/depression much worse. Unfortunately I'm very sensitive to medication. That was when I made the decision I was done with meds. At the time my doctor wouldn't even consider a laparoscopy, much less a hysterectomy. So I found an ObGyn who works with a lot of endo patients and told her I wanted an official diagnosis via laparoscopy and biopsy, to make sure we were dealing with endo. I told her meds weren't working and if I did have endo I would be pushing for a hysterectomy. She was fully on board.
The laparoscopy was terrifying. I had no idea whether they were going to even find endometriosis, as my mom had had a lap at my age and they didn't find anything. I was in counseling and worked with my therapist on how to mentally prepare for surgery. I brought a stuffed animal. I had my husband nearby. It was scary but everyone was so nice to me at the hospital, they joke around and stuff. They can also give you meds that calm you down, which I decided to do because of prior medical trauma (I was hospitalized twice for suicide attempts). Hospitals are a hard place for me. When I woke up from the lap, the doctor told me she found "powder burn marks" and biopsied them. Those biopsies came back positive for endometriosis. She also said she couldn't treat much of it without damaging my cervix.
From there I took the surgery images and biopsy results and contacted the Northwest Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery clinic. I got a free consultation and told Dr. Shanti Mohling that I'd tried all the medication management options and was done. I didn't want to have my period anymore. I'd had it for four months straight at that point and I was done. I was barely functioning. Even though surgery was terrifying and I literally wanted to hyperventilate thinking about a hysterectomy, I knew I needed to do this. A month later they had a cancellation and I got in for surgery.
I had intense therapy leading up to it. I cried a lot. I had nightmares about going into surgery screaming for them to stop, that I'd changed my mind. But Dr. Mohling sat me down and said, I could tell her while they were wheeling me into the OR that I wanted to keep my uterus and she'd do it. That made me feel better. The day of the surgery, my husband couldn't be there because of COVID-19 protocols. I thought I would be terrified. I felt completely at peace. I was so excited for my periods to finally be gone forever. I wasn't scared and I didn't need meds. I was smiling and laughing when they put me to sleep. I woke up feeling like a tumor had been removed.
I haven't bled since. I haven't had bad cramps since. I don't take birth control and I only use THC/CBD for my pain (I still get ovary cramps). I'm doing pelvic floor physical therapy now to work toward pain free sex. Hospitals don't scare me as much as they used to - I was in the ER recently because I almost broke my arm and I felt so confident. I laughed at the x-ray technician who asked if I might be pregnant. It's pretty weird being a 25 year old without a uterus.
I'm still working on my anxiety. I have severe body-foc
Yeah absolutely. You may already know a hyst doesn't cure endometriosis, but it does cure adenomyosis which I appeared to be in the early stages of. I didn't know this until I went to see an excision surgeon with extensive experience treating endo. On exam we learned the main source of pain for me was my uterus. Since I'm 24 with no kids, previous doctors had brushed me off when I brought up a hyst. This doctor immediately recommended one because she could tell my levels of pain were ridiculous. Like, can't even wear a tampon ridiculous.
She said if I was 100 percent certain I wanted a hyst, we could try IUD with excision surgery and let me buy like 5 years. I hate IUDs and it was my only option left by that point, so I turned down the IUD and settled on hyst. My husband and I discussed it for months and months and were very much on the same page. And again, the surgeon felt confident that a hyst would provide the most pain relief and prevent adeno from progressing.
I went through NW Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery with Dr. Shanti Mohling. I have a 23 year old friend who also got the same surgery through the male doctor at the same clinic. When it comes down to quality of life and you've exhausted other options already, and are set on not wanting kids, it's easier to get it done. The clinic is out of network so I didn't need insurance approval either, just the ability to pay for it myself.
Hope that helps!
I hear great things about both of them so honestly you probably can't go wrong Idk what Sinervo's method is but one thing you could do is look into how they perform their surgery and decide how you want yours done. I had excision and a total hysterectomy performed by Mohling. She does her surgeries with the Da Vinci XI robot, which has a faster recovery time. Some doctors do their surgeries by hand. It's all about what you feel comfortable with - I trust a robot to be more precise and less invasive but it's technically a little controversial. Mohling was phenomenal, I'm only 2 weeks post op and I feel better than before my surgery already. I went with Mohling because her clinic wasn't as fertility focused as some clinics are, and as a 24 yr old female I was really sick of doctors urging me to have a kid so we could get my uterus out. I just wanted the damn hysterectomy and Mohling was incredibly supportive and understanding. She won't push any options on you either, she's very fair and wants to do what her patient wants. Had I said I wanted to get pregnant she probably would've been equally helpful in that regard as well. Phenomenal experience overall with her.
Can confirm mine was in that ballpark as well through Dr. Mohling. Her clinic does require a $3,000 down payment up front I believe and then you can do installments from there, I think. My insurance helped in my case, I got lucky.
Unfortunately doctors can call themselves endometriosis specialists without actually being one (I saw two before finally landing in the care of Dr. Shanti Mohling, a very famous excision specialist). Basically what you're looking for is a "gynecologic surgeon" who specializes in "excision of endometriosis and pelvic surgeries". That will help you weed out the doctors who are not qualified excision surgeons.
Even if you don't want to "save" your uterus (I didn't care about mine either), you will want an excision specialist because they are the best at handling adhesions and endometriomas. Excision surgeons will remove ALL of the endometriosis adhesions and lesions and such, which is what causes pain and symptoms. Any that is left behind by an incompetent surgeon can leave you with pain and issues! Aside from that, my surgeon warned me that some doctors who aren't as skilled will accidentally destroy blood flow to remaining ovaries, eventually killing them and sending you into surgical menopause.
So basically, it's totally worth going for a specialist because you'll reduce your risk of complications and need for future surgeries. It was more expensive but I went with a specialist for my excision and hysterectomy because I wanted to avoid any complications. Ten weeks post op and life is GREAT!
If travel is possible, I know people in California who struggled to find a doctor so they came up to Portland, OR for treatment from Northwest Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Shanti Mohling and Dr. Nicholas Fogelson, they are leaders in the field of excision surgery. They offer remote consultations and payment plans.
I am childfree and had my hysterectomy at age 24 through their clinic. I know many other young women and genderqueer folks who have as well.
I had surgery with Dr. Shanti Mohling and she said that when TTC it makes the most sense to have excision surgery before IVF. Because there is damage being done to your body by the endo and it needs to be addressed in order to successfully conceive and carry. It would be particularly heart wrenching not to be able to carry to term once conceived with IVF too, so that's something to think about. Getting it addressed before IVF retrieval makes the most sense if you consider how beneficial excision surgery is at making you healthier.
I didn't go the pregnancy route following my excision surgery but it did immensely relieve my symptoms.
I had surgery with a "Nook" surgeon but I didn't find her through Nancy's Nook. Her name is Dr. Shanti Mohling and she practices excision using a DaVinci robot. I was familiar with the controversy surrounding the robot going in to the surgery, but I found Dr. Mohling very skilled and persuasive. More importantly, my surgery was a smooth experience and she addressed all of my issues. It's been nine months post surgery (excision + a total hysterectomy) and thanks to Dr. Mohling's skilled work my ovaries are still functioning and I have no endometriosis related pain. I just got my hormone levels checked and an ultrasound the other day.
When people talk about the robot "burning" being a bad thing they are treating it like the robot is cauterizing endo lesions, which is a less effective treatment. That's NOT what's going on. Dr. Mohling explained that when she cuts *around* the endo lesions, the burning helps seal the tissue so that it heals quickly. It has a tremendous success rate in comparison to other surgery types because patients heal more quickly. As an example, a friend had almost the exact same surgery with me about two months beforehand, and her excision surgeon didn't use the DaVinci. I healed up very quickly in comparison to her despite having my surgery afterwards.
The other important thing to note is that doctors are humans and they get tired. Robots can't get tired. That's why they were invented - to help surgeons be more precise and make fewer mistakes. It's easier on them physically. I see nothing wrong with technology enabling skilled doctors to do and feel better.
The guy who runs the new York clinic you mentioned is a bit wacky. His social media rants are very off-putting, in my opinion. I'm not a fan of Nancy's Nook either. But the doctor who is against DaVinci is not persuasive to me. He wants surgeons to rely entirely on their hands and feel. That kind of surgery takes longer, and probably makes him more money, and there isn't enough evidence it's "better" for the patient. However, it does funnel nervous new patients to him because he gets business from his fear mongering. Fewer non-DaVinci trained surgeons = more clients for the ones who do practice solely by hand.
These doctors are running a business. His business happens to have a niche in non-DaVinci surgery, so to stay in business, he needs to make the robot seem like the inferior option - despite the fact doing that makes excision surgery more inaccessible to more patients. Not all of us can afford to fly to New York and pay out of pocket for this singular dude with highly specialized to spend hours operating on us. The robot enables more doctors to perform more surgeries with better success rates. He's just some old dude who wants to keep excision as limited and inaccessible as possible.
My excision experience, 1 yr later
My excision experience, 1 yr later
Hi endo warriors, I am rapidly approaching the one year anniversary of my excision surgery next month 🧁 and I wanted to share my experience for any of you on the fence about excision surgery or maybe waiting for your surgery date and just trying to get as much information as possible. If you are not interested in having children this post may be especially interesting for you.
I was diagnosed via laparoscopy by a general gynecologist in December of 2021. The gynecologist cauterized some of the obvious endometriosis lesions she saw and confirmed endometriosis via biopsy, but said she couldn't treat the extensive lesions around my cervix and suggested I try Orilissa. After extensively researching Orilissa and Lupron as well as excision surgery with a specialist, I decided to have a free consultation with Dr. Shanti Mohling at Northwest Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery as I live near enough to Portland.
I was so impressed with her at our consultation, which I did in person and involved an extensive physical exam and internal ultrasound. I decided to move forward with excision surgery instead of Orilissa. At this point I was in severe pain on a daily basis and struggling with my full time job, and Dr. Mohling wanted to get me into surgery as soon as possible. Due to the severe pain I was having from an inflamed cervix and my desire to permanently end my unbearable periods, she suggested a total hysterectomy - removal of the uterus and cervix.
I got in on a cancellation for surgery a month later. It was scary but I did decide to move forward with the hysterectomy even though I was only 24 at the time, because I felt this would bring me the most relief. Dr. Mohling did not push me in any direction and the day of surgery she offered not to do the hysterectomy if I had any doubts. Fortunately I didn't and felt excited and confident. My surgery went perfectly, as did my recovery. I scheduled a month off work and I really did need a month, I couldn't believe how bad the brain fog was even as I felt physically better with time.
I only had the powder burn mark lesions and some adhesions from ruptured ovarian cysts, so technically I had Stage I endometriosis, but my lesions were extensive - I think Dr. Mohling removed around twelve from throughout my abdominal cavity. The worst was around my cervix, and my cervix and uterus were inflamed although I was negative for adenomyosis. My fallopian tubes were removed, and I kept my ovaries. Dr. Mohling also diagnosed me with interstitial cystitis during surgery.
My worst symptoms prior to surgery were nausea, unintended weight loss, pelvic pain, severe neverending periods. I had immediate relief from those symptom within a week of my surgery. Within a month I felt a newfound energy. It took six months for my chronic fatigue to be half of what it was before. Not to mention the DREAM that is life without periods. Omg. Now that I'm a year out it's actually easy to forget I even have endometriosis other than some issues with chronic fatigue and pelvic discomfort, which I manage with pelvic floor physical therapy and trying to take good care of my body.
That being said, it of course hasn't come without certain tradeoffs. My ovaries have struggled a lot and I've continued to have issues with painful ovarian cysts. My ovaries aren't producing enough hormones, so I struggled with menopausal symptoms until starting HRT (both testosterone and estrogen), and those medications come with their own disappointing side effects. I haven't been able to resume normal sex, although when we do try (I'm married) we are usually successful with minimal discomfort for me. This is due to PT, lots of lube, and estrogen cream!
I have ZERO regrets about my surgery, it was the best possible outcome for me even with the downsides. I've been in therapy to cope with the grief of losing my uterus and struggling with chronic pain and medical trauma, but it has been manageable. I am able to live so much more than before my surgery. I hope that the results are long term for me, I know that there's always the possibility I will need excision again in the future - but I have a good doctor I trust with my care.
Please let me know if you have any questions about my experience, or what's been on your mind. Good luck with your journey!
That's bullshit. I'm sorry you're experiencing such a shitty doctor (we all do at some point). I had a hysterectomy and excision surgery by a specialist (Dr. Shanti Mohling, NWEPS clinic in Portland) at age 24. I'm going on 26 and it was the best decision I ever made.
What you need is to talk to a good specialist like Dr. Mohling. I know that there are other specialists who will do hysterectomies for childfree folks.
Just make sure you do your research and are really informed. The more informed and persuasive you are, the more likely doctors are to do what you want.
Let me know if you have any questions or need support.
It was phenomenal. I saw Dr. Mohling. She has great beside manners, took me seriously, allowed me to process my medical trauma during our exams, and took me and my husband seriously when we said I wanted a hysterectomy. Their office is lovely and the entire experience with my surgery was well planned, reassuring, and just went incredibly smoothly. I always felt heard.
Regarding payment, they allow you to pay in installments which really helped us out.
Dr. Shanti Mohling at Northwest Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery does gender affirming hysterectomies and treats pain caused from endometriosis through excision surgery. I was 24 when she did mine after I was told no by other obgyns. I am a nonbinary femme. Best decision of my life.

I met with dr. Mohling they got me in so fast like 5days. Verified my insurance, and my excision is scheduled in august and I only had to wait that long because I have another more emergent surgery that ultimately we decided to do separately. So far I have been extremely happy with them.
I live in western states an Amtrak runs up and down the whole coast and through a lot of the east.
It might be worth it to find a surgeon closer. The drive could literally cost you your life. Or permanent lung damage.
There is a surgeon group that has appointments for new patients in a few days and surgery scheduled out only 1-3 months.

They give you pics and video of your lap and specialize in endometriosis excision only. People from all over the world come to them. I had shanti Mohling she’s awesome. They teach other gynos how to find endometriosis and the best surgical techniques.
If you must drive look into medical compression stockings. And also ask your surgeon exactly how often and how long you have to walk when you stop the car. If it’s a 15min (time it takes to circulate blood all the way through 3 times) walk every time you stop at 2.5 hours that’s a lot of time you are adding to your drive.
Omg I loved dr Mohling! She did mine last year and I’m still pain free.
I have:
Asthma, hashimotos, probably ehlers danlos, endometriosis, adnomyosis, prone to clots, duplication urinary system parts, chronic utis, chronic fatigue. I’ve been worked up for a lot more.

Thank you so much for replying. I’m traveling to see Dr. Mohling and even with flights (first class to return) and hotel I wouldn’t hit that cost.
I’m seeing Dr. Shanti Mohling in Portland soon. She did a zoom consult and I booked right away, but the next spot was several months away. She’s very clear on cost in her website. Her office has a lawyer the gets you the maximum insurance benefit. She is out of network, but her fees are very clear. I would definitely check her out. If you search her name you will come across other people’s experiences here.
I’m from the NY area and I consulted with him and for several reasons decided not to preceded with him.
I traveled to see my doctor and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Best money I would ever spend in my life, and it half what doctor Vidali charges. My life is forever changed. Shanti Mohling in Portland, has excellent surgical skills and knowledge about the disease, and the best bedside manner. She even stayed with me and held my hand while I went to sleep. A ticket to Portland was fairly cheap, I booked a hotel room with a Kitchenette and grabbed food a Trader Joe’s before hand.
I’m from the east coast to see Shanti Mohling in Portland and I can’t recommend her enough. She has amazing surgical skills and her knowledge about the disease is extensive. Also, on the plus side everything is cheaper there without compromising quality of care.
There several excision specialists here, but I decided not to proceed with them and travel instead. I met her for a Zoom consult, and booked right away. She changed my life.
I was Dr. Mohling’s patient. Nothing detected on manual or ultrasound exam and I had very deep lesions, Stage III. I read her surgical notes and it looks like she was mining until she found the tooth cause of every problem I had. Everything she did was directly associated with my symptoms.
Dr. Lora Liu is in NYS I didn’t consult with her, so no experience there.
I went to Oregon to see Dr. Shanti Mohling, and loved my experience.
Something to consider everything in NY is more expensive.
I would be very careful with your next choice if doctor. You will get the same attitude, and wait times and pay about the same fees. The people that think they are the only ones that can operate and don’t try to learn more or accept any wrong doing.
I kept having a bad feeling with consultations, I was trying to overlook things about these two doctors and thankfully I had a moment of clarity and started looking for another doctor.
I ended up seeing Dr. Mohling in Portland, and it was the best decision ever and I also saved more than half the money I would’ve paid in NY. They do free case reviews.
Would you be willing to travel? I saw Dr. Mohling and Portland and I traveled to see her. Its was a breeze and a lot cheaper than seeing anyone in NYC. I found her on Intagram via one of her posts that literally described me.
Someone posted they had a good experience with Dr. Veronica Learner in Manhattan. She operates at Lenox Hill and seems to take insurance.
I see the problems with Nacy’s Nook, but I don’t go there to look for doctors. I read the patients experiences there and I look everywhere else online.
It’s so unfortunate you had a bad experience. Dr. Mohling is a great doctor and human. Her assistant, who schedules appointments, is also a medical assistant, and she is there to assist the doctor in all ways possible.
I think most doctors have another person in the room when doing these types of invasive exams so there’s a witness and prevent claims of assault but also make things more comfortable for the patient. The assistant kept the speculum warm on a very cold day and handed everything to the doctor so that she could be done quickly. I found these things so thoughtful!
I work in healthcare, and I know doctors are tired of dealing with insurance that are constantly lowering their reimbursements, not compensating them fairly and disputing any diagnosis or treatment they offer.
I work in an unrelated field, but also fee for service office, and my doctors expect to be paid the day of service by the patient. They employ administrative staff to assist patients in submitting claims. But I f someone tries to deviate from the standard way this office operates, the treatment doesn’t get started, the fee is collected upfront or the patient is dismissed. There are too many scams going on. Also, it’s common for insurances to void pre-authorizations and then change their minds and it’s very difficult to collect the payment after.
I think Dr. Mohling’s practice operation is fair. After all, people should be compensated for their skills and experience accordingly. Her fee is one of the lowest of out-network excision specialists, and even her consultation and preop visits are much more reasonable than those of other doctors. My initial consultation was complementary, and I paid another excision surgeon $1,000. The preop was billed to the insurance, but I didn’t pay anything extra for the preop visit or any follow-ups, which many doctors charge separate. They didn’t even collect a deposit for booking my surgery and agreed to see me for my first in-person visit and preop appointment the day before my surgery. So I didn’t have to travel there unnecessarily.
I hope you find someone skilled to help you.
I have seen the work he does and he seems excellent. Also, his partner Dr. Eugenio Colon aka Drencometriosis on Instagram seems great (posts a lot of educational videos and surgeries).
Traveling for treatment can seem scary but it was also the best Decision for me. I went to Portland and saw Dr. Shanti Mohling and highly recommend her.
I went here and saw Dr. Mohling.

I saw a few doctors before I saw her, but I complained about pain for over a decade before anyone took me seriously. I found out about endometriosis on my own; no doctor mentioned that word to me. I was never even offered an ultrasound until I saw an emergency doctor for a respiratory condition and casually mentioned my pain.
I paid 1,000 for a consult with a specialist I ultimately did not get surgery with because I didn’t feel comfortable.

I have bowel endo. It manifests as chunky period blood coming out of my butt on the first few days of my cycle. Painful bowel movements on those same days. No symptoms any other days. I have an MRI with gel contrast scheduled for next week to find out the details pre surgery. My surgeon is Dr. Shanti Mohling who is a renowned endo and bowel endo specialist. She’s the BEST!
Shanti Mohling and Nicholas Fogelson at NW Endometriosis are the best in the area. They don’t take insurance though.
Richard Rosenfield at Pearl Women’s Center is nice. Can’t do complex surgery though, e.g. bowel endo.
Amanda Ecker at OHSU is listed as specializing in endo. I haven’t seen her.
DM if you need more info.
Shanti Mohling is my doctor and she is wonderful. The most caring doctor I’ve ever seen for anything. I’ll be having excision surgery with her later this year.
Agree with this. For me, fertility preservation is very important. Dr Mohling spent over an hour with me discussing fine details of how she would preform the excision in such a way that would preserve fertility. She also recommended egg retrieval and freezing beforehand as an extra insurance measure, which I wouldn’t have thought to do on my own.
My surgeon specializes in bowel endo, her name is Shanti Mohling in Portland, Oregon. In case you want to travel, you can usually get in for a consult with her quickly and her surgery schedule is usually about 2 months out.
Hey, I’m sorry for what she’s going through. I had excision surgery 3 years ago with an amazing specialist in Portland and I paid out of pocket for it. My life is immeasurably better. Seriously I would sell all my belongings to do it again if I had to.
My surgeon is Shanti Mohling at NW Endometriosis.
