I haven’t yet, but I will be traveling from Canada to Bucharest for my surgery in a few weeks.
There’s a whole FB group for Canadians in this situation: “Canadians travelling to the Bucharest Endometriosis Centre” even if you’re not Canadian, a lot of women who have completed their trips have shared their experiences there.
Dr. Mitroi’s assistant told me he recommends staying 7-10 days after surgery before flying home. I’m staying for 12.

Your surgeon meant, “there’s nothing **I** can do about it because I don’t have the skills necessary, but I don’t want to admit that to you”.
My gynecologist told me the same thing last May. I found a surgeon (Dr. Gabriel Mitroi at the Bucharest Endometriosis Center) who had the skills to do excision surgery and they partnered with a colo-rectal surgeon (Dr. Augustine Dima) to do a bowel resection.

Wow, I can’t believe he said that to you. A stoma bag is a *possibility*, but it really depends on the situation. In my case, I had two nodules on my bowel. The lowest nodule was 12 cm up from the rectum. Dr. Mitroi explained to me that they really only worry about the possibility of needing a stoma bag if the nodule is 8 cm or lower.
I’m based in Canada, but unfortunately had to go to Bucharest, Romania for surgery.
I know Mr. Shaheen Khazali at the Lister Hospital is very good and handles cases like this! But I’m not sure if you’d be able to see him without going private.

All of the above!
It was actually a surgeon at the Ottawa hospital, the best endometriosis surgeon in Ottawa, who told me that my best option would be to leave Canada and get surgery in another country. Even with Stage 4 endo that had infiltrated my bowel, he said it’d be 1.5 years before I could get surgery in Canada. And I was already more than a year into the process of trying to get surgery. He also said that I’d need a colo-rectal surgeon to do the bowel resection, so I might need 2 separate surgeries in Canada, vs. Some endometriosis centres elsewhere had teams of surgeons and I could get it all done in one surgery.
He recommended the UK or India, but after doing some research I saw that Romania had a very skilled surgeon (Dr. Gabriel Mitroi) with a lot of positive reviews, and surgery with him would be much cheaper than the UK, and easier to get to than India.
Dr. Mitroi did my excision surgery, and his colleague Dr. Augustine Dima did my bowel resection. All one surgery.

Happy to share whatever info I can about it! Hopefully you won’t need an ileostomy. One of the reasons I chose Romania was the skill level - in Canada the surgeon warned me that there was a 10% chance of me getting a colostomy bag if I went forward with the resection. Dr. Mitroi said in my case, it wasn’t a concern. They do many surgeries per week - far more than they do in Canada.
The recovery process went well! I stayed in the hospital in Bucharest for 3-4 days, and then went back to my hotel room for the rest of the time. I had a post-op appointment a week after my surgery with Dr. Mitroi. I stayed in Romania for 12 days post-op, then flew home to Canada.

I had laparoscopic excision surgery and a bowel resection done about 10 weeks ago! I’m a Canadian and ended up going to Bucharest, Romania to get the surgery done. Dr. Mitroi and Dr. Dima are very, very skilled. I ended up having 20 cm of my bowel removed, and I did not end up with a colostomy bag.

I do know of a few women who had surgery with Dr. Mitroi and Dr. Dima and needed a temporary colostomy bag - but they were able to get it reversed after about 4 weeks, instead of the 2-3 years it would have taken in Canada.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Your anger is completely valid. I was there last September; after a year and a half of waiting to see a surgeon in Canada, he told me that despite my severe stage 4 endo with bowel nodules requiring a resection, it would be a year and a half for surgery. He recommended I go outside of Canada for surgery if possible. I was floored. And then I was angry.
I ended up going to Romania, to the Bucharest Endometriosis Center and having surgery with Dr. Mitroi in December.

Oh friend, I am so sorry you’re in this situation. I was there last year. I was referred to Dr. Singh, with stage 4 and 2 nodules on my bowel. I thought the severity of my case meant I’d get surgery within the next few months.
I saw Dr. Singh in September and he told me that it’d be a 1.5 year wait for surgery. He advised me that if it was at all possible, I should go out of country for surgery. I went to the Bucharest Endometriosis Centre in Bucharest, Romania and had surgery (including a bowel resection) with Dr. Mitroi.
Maybe Dr. Chen has a shorter waitlist, but if you have bowel involvement, that will likely require a colorectal surgeon to be present… which can make it more complicated to schedule, I guess.
The BEC has a colorectal surgeon on staff, Dr. Dima, who did the actual resection part of my surgery.
I would encourage you to call the Shirley Greenberg clinic and ask about the status of your referral. If it’s accepted, ask to be put on a cancellation list to hopefully

It is incredibly frustrating and disheartening! Not something you ever expect to hear from your doctor in Canada, but at the same time I really appreciate Dr. Singh’s transparency.
I flew to Bucharest 3 days before my surgery, then had an MRI with their radiologist and did some pre-op blood tests. They use the MRI to help plan the surgery. Administratively, they’re a little disorganized, but the medical care was incredible.

Having been a patient of Dr. Mitroi’s, this doesn’t surprise me at all. And I don’t mean that in a bad way!
I think when he’s saying he will “diagnose” you, he means that he’ll do the physical exam and talk to you about your symptoms and that will give him a good idea of what’s going on and where to look. He uses the MRI they do to plan the surgery, not necessarily to “diagnose” in the sense of diagnosing a disease.
He is quite busy and I think that’s likely why they said they don’t need your medical records - he’ll be able to get all the info he needs from talking to you / your physical exam.
I had a great experience with the BEC. They can seem disorganized (especially Manuela) and like they’re flying by the seat of their pants, but in terms of medical care, they are exceptional. He is very good at what he does, and he does A LOT. This means he runs around and can seem hurried or scattered, but the actual medical care does not suffer. I struggled with this myself two years ago. My gynaecologist tried to send me away with another prescription for hormonal medication I didn’t want. He said it would treat the pain. I told him I didn’t just want to treat the pain, I was concerned about the damage it was causing inside and that it might be on my bowel.
He straight up told me “even if it is on your bowel, surgery won’t help you”.
When I asked him about excision surgery, he started to back pedal. I had to push very hard to get him to refer me to a surgeon.
Six months later I had surgery that included a bowel resection - 20 cm of my sigmoid colon. But, I had to go out of country for it. I left Canada and travelled to Romania for surgery at the Bucharest Endometriosis Centre with Dr. Gabriel Mitroi.

For me it's not even about the wait times. I'm terrified for a Canadian surgeon to touch me here. They think they know endometriosis and it's after surgery you find out they don't. I am way less nervous or scared of putting my life in Mitroi's hands than I am at the thought of anyone maiming me here. Women are dying in Canada from horrible endometriosis healthcare and it's disgusting. He's one of the few and best in the world with his team and online they even have the medical journal of endometriosis from A-Z. I trust the man that wrote the book on my disease hands down.

I had a chocolate cyst and that actually was the only thing that wasn't found in my second surgery. I can't say for sure this was what had helped but I was told to take NAC which is an amino acid that's studied to bring down inflammation even in COPD patients but the happy fact is it actually has been shown to shrink cysts and fibroids. Designs for health is the brand i use since it was the recommended one.
You could also just email questions to mitroi or vidali about your situation to have another opinion if you feel lost. It's not easy and I only say that because I had trust in my surgeon until I found out I shouldn't have. Not saying yours is a bad one but when it comes to Endo these two just know exactly what they're looking at and all the forms Endo can take. Some surgeons just don't know what every kind looks like. Also I say to contact them because they're very validating and it helped my mental health so much to just have someone have a conversation without having to explain

I just had surgery last month in Romania and the Bucharest endometriosis center. Dr. Mitroi and his surgical specialists team have put together a free download that's half way down their main page thats called endometriosis A-Z
This e book is all their info and experience in an easy to read format that can absolutely help you through your appointments.
I'm sick of being told my Endo isn't my Endo and the bull shit docs here who haven't been and are not being trained in proper endometriosis surgically or simply at the gp level.
I can tell you for Canada at least the government allocated 1.6 million for Endo to only two organizations. I'm sure they are doing some good things but it's nothing that is ACTUALLY needed like docs learning wtf Endo really is instead of the biased god complex of a style now where they get to tell women what will and won't be done for their condition while simultaneously causing them more harm by denying STUDIED fa

I can only say what I did for myself. I had my first surgery in Canada and I got my diagnosis so for that reason and that alone I'm happy I had it. I had debilitating pain before the surgery and it did relieve it for four months. After that I realized how poorly Endo is funded and treated in Canada and I decided to fly to the surgeons who know what they're doing and do it right the first time. I suggest two dr. Vidali who has been doing Endo surgery since 1996 and I personally think he's a really nice person endometriosis_surgeon on insta is his page where he gives lots of info and dr.mitroi and his team at the Bucharest endometriosis center where I had my second surgery done and found how vastly different Endo is done there. So the surgery once right the first time and don't wait until it grows to the point where you're in pain and have to trudge through the system. Im 34 now and I've been trying for 11 years to get pregnant. If I could go back in time I would have done this much fast

If you scroll half way down the page there is a pdf download button to download the Endometriosis A-Z manual
The surgical specialists at the center have put together a concise medical journal of Endo. Has everything from surgery to medications to where pain can present.
Birth control doesn't stop the growth of Endo in any way. North american standard is to give birth control. It's not the best science for Endo it's just pretty well the only way docs have been managing it because they aren't trained in what Endo is, we don't have surgeons specialized enough in high enough numbers to do excision surgery which is the actual gold standard WHEN you have a competent surgeon which many are not because Endo isn't funded en

I was in the same situation being told I was fine when I knew I wasn't. I reached out to dr. Gabriel mitroi from the Buchanan endometriosis center. If you go to their website the have a contact button to email them for questions on what you should do since he will ask you about what you're feeling.
The surgical team there literally gave me my life back. Just talking to a professional who doesn't need to be corrected felt amazingly validating.

Yes luckily I was able to get in and fly to Romania. I had dr. Mitroi and his surgical team do my second lap and they found and removed it all including the adhesions she created and the left side excised again since it had grown back in the span of four months since she didn't remove it correctly. I also had cysts on my tubes .. never mentioned more than just one she removed.
I don't talk about this much but there was a point in Romania when I had the MRI before surgery that I had a call wondering if I had my tubes removed, my heart sank but in the end it was the imaging that made them hard to see but they were there. .. but it hit me in that moment that I literally couldn't say for certain weather they had removed them and not told me or not. That's how little trust I have in our system that I actually wasn't completely shocked that they could have taken them and just not noted it down. It was probably the worst feeling I've ever had in my life because then I knew why I felt so sad

For me no, I don't take any hormonal medications just anti inflammatory ones. After surgery I was able to cut back on a lot of stuff I was taking because I didn't have the same symptoms anymore so now I've just been keeping up on certain suppliments I'm lacking in and I take dim which helps flush excess estrogen but is OTC.
My surgery lasted four months before pain came back after an obgyn did it. My surgery with Dr. Mitroi I had way more Endo found and removed and I've been good since. I actually find the only thing I battle with now is hormonal acne when before I couldn't walk.

I did quite a bit of searching locally and nothing to the caliber of dr. Mitroi was available so I flew to Bucharest Romania to the Bucharest endometriosis center.
I had a lap that spotted Endo on my bowel, bladder, and ureters at home but they wouldn't touch those spots and when I had my surgery with mitroi I realized very quickly what the differences between them were.
Their surgical team is top notch and I can honestly say after doing it I can't imagine going to a regular gyno ever again....it's laughable to have a gynecologist or anyone under an excision specialists touch the disease.
Best decision of my life and it was simple with them I just sent an email and mitroi got back to me personally quicker than my doc here does to return a call.

Dr. Mitroi did my surgery and I hands down will be flying back to have it done again when needed with little hesitation.
His team gave me my life back and did way better surgery on me than I had access to at home. They also treat you respectfully there not like you're a number.
Romania is also beautiful on its own so being there isn't entirely expensive which helps the trip cost.

I'm in the same boat and for complete and proper excision I flew to the Bucharest endometriosis center and had surgery with Dr. Mitroi and his team before IVF.
Another top tier surgeon for this specific situation is dr. Vidali in NYC. He also does surgeries in other locations.
I would absolutely do the surgery before doing IVF. Endo can be in a lot of places you don't realize until a surgeon goes in and removes it. The surgeon matters the most so for me personally I will only use those two.
If I would have gone ahead I don't think with the growths I had anything would have worked. The Bec website has a pdf download that has sections on this specifically.

For me I wasn't able to access proper excision surgery at home so the pain I was in became unmanageable. Mitroi's team did my surgery and I walked out feeling like Cinderella like I was in my true body for the first time. I didn't realize how much Endo I had before that surgery because the obgyn that did my previous one never noted any of it so I was happy I did the surgery first because I had no idea my bladder was also affected until it was done.
I did a few consult calls about the fertility side of things because I had always been told I had unexplained infertility so luckily when I did get the surgery mitroi said that now there shouldn't be any physical issues in the way so even just for the peace of mind and emotions of it all I found it to be very worth it because I have more of a sense of certainty about what's going on inside.

I've had two, my first one was my exploratory lap that was done by an obgyn so very minimal clear out of growths mostly just taking the sample to get pathology to diagnose.
Second surgery I had done at the Bucharest endometriosis center in Romania by dr. Mitroi and he absolutely cleared out everything I had in there and found about 60% more growths than the obgyn recognized in my first surgery.
Both gave relief but the second full excision has given me so far a year of no pain when before I couldn't even cough or sneeze without my legs buckling from the left and right uterosacral ligament Endo in my lower back among other places. My first surgery the pain was better for about 4 months, so the surgeon definitely matters.

I had bowel and bladder Endo and I had the same experience in Canada they noted Endo but left it pretty well alone after the lap I had no one trying to help me find someone to remove it.
It was affecting my ability to eat and by the time I had figured out they had no intention of helping me I was unable to even use the washroom or get food in. I flew to Romania for surgery with Dr. Mitroi and he removed everything in one surgery and gave me my life back.
The surgeons at the BEC center are absolutely amazing with information and navigating Endo. I sent them an email to inquire about my symptoms and had them get back to me within 24 hours which was honestly faster than my local gp answers my calls.

Hello, i also have endometriosis diagnosed in 2021 in sweden and fought as hard as i could to get the treament i needed. My symtoms were very similiar to your. Unfortunatly for me swedens health care is disgustingly bad. I was unable to even walk but they all kept telling me it was all in my head.
After 3 years of fightning for care i gave up on sweden and went to Romania after finding Dr. Gabriel Mitroi. In 25mins with an mri they found that i had stage 4 and 2 days later i was on the operating table. Once i woke up all the pain was completly gone i felt like a new person.

I hope you find something that works for you, don't give up sister ❤

Hi hi fellow swede, i tried to get help with my endo in sweden aswell but if im gonna be honest don't even bother with these incompitent losers. I could barely walk or eat for over 2 years and they did absolutely nothing, i asked for a referal to the endo centers in sweden multiple times and got denied everytime since i didn't try to have 2 iuds, 4x dose of progesterone and taking lupron at the same time like wtf.
They only wanted to write a referal after i told them i would go to romania for surgery but that was a little too late at that point. However i am kind of glad they did it since i found a surgeon in romania, since he is way more compitent than the surgeons in sweden. In sweden they perform around 5 excision surgeries per month, meanwhile Dr. Mitroi do atleast 5 surgeries per week.

Not sure how fast it is tho, they were too slow for me since i got an apointemt for the surgery and MRI within a month. If you are on FB find Nancy's Nook group and read all the articles. There is a website as well.
Google Bucharest Endometriosis Center and Dr Gabriel Mitroi. I had done a lot of reading and found him to be the expert in excision surgery. I emailed him with my case and he gave me his opinion. I set up a GFM and flew there for surgery. Booking time is about two months. Tell him you would like to have kids.
Honestly, it's excision surgery preformed by an actual expert (there are no experts in Canada that I would trust right now, Nancy's Nook has a list of experts). Don't trust a doctor that does ablation, says they are only looking for "black Endo" or believes in "inactive or dead" Endo.
After being in pain for 6.5 years I'm so glad to be 27 days post op and feeling better every day. If I can share my experience to save anyone time I will, message me if you want.

With scheduling MRI, flights and everything on such a short notice I didn't think I'd have enough time to schedule a consultation, but I did have a talk with a doctor before the surgery describing my symptoms and MRI finds.
The anesthesiologist was brilliant, so I didn't have much in terms of the side effects. I was loopy as hell the day of the surgery right afterwards, but since they let you stay in a hospital for a few days, it wasn't exactly a problem. All I've had really was a sore throat - was taking lozenges for that, so it was just mildly annoying. It's just that Dr. Mitroi is just one person and can't be in multiple places at once, even though he tries his best and is very approachable online in case you have any questions. I've had my first real life conversation with him on the day of the surgery, since the one scheduled before on a previos day didn't happen due to scheduling issue and then he was busy with the evening surgery longer than expected and wasn't available for a call. At first I was very put off by this, but quality of the surgery and aftercare were exceptional, so I'd give it a pass. While buying tickets make sure to ask for assistance on flight back, as airport queues may still be too exausting.
You'll be staying in a hospital for at least the first couple of days, so most of the aftercare will be handled on site. After that you'll be given a prespcription and a date for a post-op consultation while you still in the country. The prescription can easily be filled in Romania, as you'll need those meds straight away. To me they're given more than enough recovery meds and I still have most of it left, so I didn't use any Romanian prescription in Ireland. In case you'd need any professional aftercare while st

But I do understand that this is all anecdotal and I belive that people can have negative experiences with this doctor too. The worst part for me was how disorganized everything seemed, apart from that I can't recall any complaints.

My family paid privately for my surgery with a BSGE surgeon in 2022, but he did not complete the surgery as it was too complex for him as there was bowel involvement. He said I would need a second surgery with a colorectal surgeon present, which would be charged separately. He also said I would need a protective stoma for 12 months as my rectum would need re-secting. I was gutted as they paid £11,000 for the surgery in total.
I ended up seeking a second opinion as I wasn't happy with the thought of a stoma and I travelled to Romania for surgery with Dr Gabriel Mitroi, who performed the surgery with no re-section needed and no stoma. I had surgery with Dr Mitroi in Romania in 2023 and I was given espresso shots with every single meal and encouraged to chew gum to help me go to the toilet. He's an expert in endometriosis surgery so I'm sure caffeine will be fine.
I also use magnesium citrate and slightly increased my dose post-op which helped me go to the toilet on day 3 when in the past following surgeries, it was more like day 7.

Romania! Dr Mitroi at the Bucharest Endometriosis Center got us in for March 2024 when we reached out in December 2023 just before the NY. It is cheaper than out of pocket elsewhere for a specialist in USA, he has access to a DaVinci robot *highly recommend - have had 1 surgery with and 1 without it and the robot was way better even with it being more extensive and invasive surgery + a hyster AND pudendal nerve decompression on right side). I paid ~$26-28k all in including flights, travel expenses, air bnb for 14 days I believe, that’s hospital expenses and meds too. I had a total hysterectomy, endo excision (around my sciatic spine 🤮, DIE on my bowels & bladder) and lower bowel shaving, they also cut away adhesions and some weird ass scar tissue thing that in Canada they told me was an umbilical hernia (it wasn’t..), aaaand a pudendal nerve decompression surgery on the right side. I’m probably missing something. It’s so fxcked up how much work we have done and somehow are treated like

A lot of us with endometriosis and adenomyosis wind up with pudendal neuralgia (compressed pudendal nerves) — I saw Dr Mitroi in Romania for my second surgery and was diagnosed w bilateral PN. He decompressed the right nerve (can only do 1 at a time due to the invasive and traumatizing nature of the surgery — and I still don’t know if it will end up being worth it tbh…) and while I have less swelling on the entire right side of my body compared to my left now — I am still struggling a lot and the nerve healing is hella slow (plus the left one is pissed from compensating for the right while it heals). ANYWAYS - all this to say: from what my friend (also dx w same thing and also treated in Romania back in March) and I have put together is that if you map out where the pudendal nerve runs in your pelvis and abdomen you realize it touches basically EVERY organ and attaches where a lot of us have pain around our rib cages / diaphragm area (note: I had this checked in surgery and no endo fou

I have endometriosis, had adeno but got a hyster last year along w my second endo surgery (DIE on bladder and bowels) and was also diagnosed and half treated for bilateral pudendal neuralgia (compressed pelvic nerves) at that time in Romania w Dr Mitroi. He put me and my friend (had a v similar surgery, same dx) on Lyrica (pregabalin) for healing post-surgery as this version is said to help heal nerves as well as change the way your brain processes pain (which has been both a good and bad thing for me for different reasons — it’s smtg to keep an eye on w these types of drugs). I haven’t thought much about whether it’s helped my GI symptoms and everything else because I assumed removed endo from my bladder & bowels mainly helped that lol but I know I FEEL IT when it’s anywhere from 20-24h from my last dose of pregabalin.

I had surgery with Dr. Mitroi in January, and I don’t regret it for a second. Well worth the money even if things don’t always run as you would expect in your own country. This man has completely changed my life, and he was able to get me in within 2 months of sending the first email.

I got my stage 4 endo excision/ bowel resection done by Dr. Mitroi and his team, and I can’t say enough good things about him. His bedside manner was fine- he was quite funny at times and he felt authentic. As far as pudendal nerve- I actually told him during my in person consult that I wasn’t interested in the procedure and he said he agreed with me and it wasn’t recommended in my case. I found that he was very open to hearing my concerns and wishes, and I felt that I was in great hands. I’m more than a year out from my surgery and I still feel like a new person. Of course there are cultural differences in Romania, but I felt cared for and seen during my entire stay and afterwards when I reached out with questions!

I had my surgery with dr Mitroi 2 months ago. Even though I'm still healing and having all kinds of pains, I'm already better than I was before the surgery.
I was struggling since high school (so almost 15 years undiagnosed) and I will be forever thankful to him.

It’s wild that this came up on my feed - I am in Bucharest right now! I had surgery with Dr Mitroi 2 weeks ago. I head back to Canada on Sunday. I’m still healing obviously but so far I’m so so glad I came. Dr Mitroi and his team, as well as the hospital they work out of (I had my surgery at a hospital called Monza) exceeded all my expectations. I had deep infiltrating endo removed from behind my uterus and cervix as well as my rectum and colon. I got an MRI here before surgery which found way more endo than the MRI I had at home. It also found a compressed nerve, chronic hip inflammation and adenomyosis. This was my first surgery for endo. After feeling so neglected and gaslit by the system back home, Dr Mitroi listened to every single concern I had and his bedside manner was incredible. Plus he stays in touch after surgery to check in.

Confirmed that Mitroi is great and it was cheaper than the US. From first contact to surgery with him was 2 months for me
