Positive experience with Dr. Lora Liu (NJ/NY) Hi everyone! Yesterday marked 6 weeks since having surgery with Dr. Lora Liu, and I wanted to share my experience in case anybody was curious about making an appointment with her. For a bit of background, since I was 14 I had painful periods that made me miss school, and I would have heavy periods with clots. When I was younger I had an ultrasound but it was all clear, and honestly after that I never pursued anything because at the time I didn't know endo existed. After learning about endo in high school I just never felt like it would be worth it to find out if I had it because of reading so many stories about people being dismissed, and I just didn't want to put myself through that. Finally, last year I was at the end of my rope and discussed it with my gyn. She dismissed me exactly like I expected, and again just decided to deal with it. I looked up specialists in my area but only found a few, one being Dr. Liu. Well, when Bindi Irwin made her post about having endo, I decided to finally try a specialist. I called Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine in Englewood NJ and much to my surprise I was able to see Dr. Liu as soon as 2 weeks from my call. I was super nervous because the person who made my appointment said I needed to bring all scans, MRIs, and other tests. I didn't have any, because of putting off pursuing a diagnosis. I almost canceled my appointment because I thought Dr. Liu would make me get all of these costly tests before helping me. I was so wrong! Dr. Liu was so compassionate, empathetic, and knowledgeable. I told her where my thinking was and why I didn't want to try medication after medication before ultimately getting surgery. I knew 100% I wanted a laparoscopy. She told me at the end of my appointment that she can't officially diagnose without surgery, but that she was 95% sure I had it. I wanted the surgery so she gave me information about what that would entail, and I set up an appointment to have

I called Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine in New Jersey to book a consult with Dr. Liu. From the day I called it was less than 2 weeks for a consult. I took roughly a week to decide I wanted surgery so after reaching out to the surgical coordinator I was offered a list of surgery dates, the earliest being 10 days from that point. I chose to get surgery a month out from that date though!

Hi! I would love to share in a private message what I paid, but I thought I'd also post here for everyone who may see this in the future that Dr. Liu seems to not be affiliated with Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine anymore and it looks like she may have her own practice now, so I don't know if what I paid would be what she charges anymore. I'm still happy to share but I might have outdated info at this point!

Dr. Liu is hands down the most amazing doctor I've ever had. And the entire staff at JCMC were absolutely fantastic. Everyone was so kind and helpful and calmed my nerves! I agree with the other poster that her pain medication schedule was more than enough as far as pain goes. But she is very prompt when you reach out with issues (I had some vomiting the day after surgery and literally as soon as I hit send on my email she called right away and had already called in the prescription for Zofran!) I'm not sure how long you are staying in the states but I would pack a ton of disposable undies, as I had some bleeding and changed my period underwear frequently, but I would hate to bring home a bunch of soiled undies. I also needed a bed rest pillow and neck pillow to support my body for a while. A heating pad would be a great idea to bring too! And I bought a bunch of coloring books too since I was planning on spending a lot of time in one place. Best of luck with your surgery!!

Hi, I am so incredibly sorry I didn't receive a notification for this comment! If you're still interested in hearing my update (today is officially 9 months post op) I would love to share my experience! The short answers to your questions is, I am doing better than I could have imagined. I chose Dr. Liu based on the fact that she works in NJ, at a hospital 40 minutes from me. Her reviews spoke for themselves, and I felt nothing but ease, comfort, and respect at my initial appointment with her. She was so thrilled that I knew what endo was (as opposed to Dr's in the past who would scold me for reading research and understanding it at all). She respected me first and foremost as a person and a patient. I also like that she automatically has a urologist there too, so I felt like I was getting the most out of my money by having 2 experts there. I was released the same day from the hospital!

I feel amazing still! Next week will officially be 10 months post op, and I'm still so surprised at how well I'm doing. All of my symptoms are still gone, including pain and issues with pain when using the bathroom. I also had cardiac symptoms which I never attributed to endo disappear after surgery. I certainly don't want to claim that surgery cured those, but I just overall feel a ton better in general. If you had any specific questions let me know!

Thank you for sharing! My surgery was a while ago, so my fees were actually higher than 8k, I felt bad when people were asking me how much I paid because I knew that what I paid was an outdated price! I hope your insurance covers that for you.

That makes a lot of sense, it's such a huge decision! I liked Dr. Liu first and foremost because her reviews were literally glowing. The only negative reviews I saw were based on her cost for the initial appointment, which I understand. I didn't have other surgeons in mind when I booked an appointment, because she was the only one in my area with great reviews and who only does endo excision. I noticed that all of her reviews focused on the fact that she believes her patients right away and that she calls everyday after surgery to check progress. That was super important to me! I went into my consult with her knowing I wanted surgery, but I knew that if I wasn't comfortable with her I'd keep searching. My initial consult just made me feel so at ease, that I knew I wanted her right away. I liked also that I could get a surgery date essentially right away--she had dates from two weeks out from when I agreed to surgery! Another great thing was the day after my consult appointment, her su

If you're specifically looking for a surgeon, I highly recommend Dr. Lora Liu. She was awesome with me, and really let me feel like I was actually the boss of my own body. I didn't need to explain myself much more than "these are my symptoms, I think I have endo, I want surgery." I can go into further detail if you like, and I also have a full review of my experience with her in my post history!

Hi! When I had appointments with Dr. Liu they were all in-person so I cannot say how the phone consultation specifically goes. However I did not feel rushed at any appointment with her, and she was very caring and listened to all my concerns. She answered any question I had before I even asked and after I scheduled my surgery provided a packet of information with tons of advice and even a shopping list of medications to have on hand. I don't know if she still does that since mine was quite some time ago. I made sure to ask if she thought I needed to lose any organs (I wanted to keep my ovaries no matter what but did not care if my appendix needed to be removed), and I asked about what future fertility would look like. I believe I also asked about birth control after surgery. Because I knew Dr. Liu only does excision and works with a team I did not feel the need to ask about ablation, how often she does surgeries, and how she handles complex cases, but you could certainly ask those sin

If not in the US, maybe try looking through who excision experts follow/share/teach. I’ve been impressed with Dr. Vidali and had my surgery this month with Dr. Lora Liu. Also, Dr. Seckin in NYC.

Go with your instincts and keep pursuing this. I hope gynos know more about bowel endo than they did when I started seeking relief ten years ago. I was diagnosed with IBS and did the low FODMAP diet (Monash U in leading the research and their app is great), which does help alleviate my bloating and gas symptoms. Had excision surgery a month ago and am hoping I don’t also have IBS but it’s hard to know yet. When I laid on my left side, I could feel twisting and cramping and it would sometimes release gas, as though something was trapping it in a normal position. I had Endo on my sigmoid colon and rectum. It had grown into the muscle. My Dr was in north Jersey, Dr Lora Liu, and she is very vocal about thorough searches. She suspected it was on my bowel (and ureters) and was right. She had a GI surgeon on her op team, too.

I’m sorry you are experiencing these symptoms. You are pretty young and if you’re pretty healthy otherwise, the chance it would be cancer I imagine would be very rare, whereas endo has a 1 in 10 rate. And that’s just the cases discovered and reported. Many wmn have reported hip to knee radiating pain, as endo lesions have been found on nerves, ureters, bladder, bowel wall, cervix—through both robotic and manual surgeries. I recommend Dr. Liu in NYC.

If your mom has it, that alone is a reason to be taken seriously. Add heavy bleeding and intense/atypical pain and any intelligent, empathetic, and informed gyno should consider you. The hardest part about gyno issues is finding GOOD help. A shocking amount of gyno’s and even “endo specialists” are misinformed on outdated info. Something a doctor said to me really stuck with me. I was telling him my symptoms and then began self-doubting how bad it actually was, and he said something along the lines of “you deserve to know if this is or isn’t endometriosis.” No doctor had ever said anything like that to me. Don’t doubt your gut. Check out Dr. Laura Liu, I saw her and she is a fierce patient advocate.

First two days of period felt like someone was scraping a razor blade down my lower back and cervical nerve endings. Had excision surgery 2024, stage 4, Dr. Lora Liu (highly recommend her Insta for info), and it was in the cul de sac behind cervix. Felt the full pain of that when a horrible gyn specialist put his finger back there during an exam and pushed with what felt like all his might.

My period pain was always the most intense in the lower back, which makes sense because in my excision surgery in 2024 they found in the cul-de-sac. There are so many nerves there and the pain radiated like you described. I’m on the east coast and was able to go to Dr. Lora Liu in NYC. Follow her on IG she posts a LOT of fierce advocacy videos, the most up to date info on the disease, bust myths (such as that a hysterectomy cures it—it doesn’t and there is no “cure” or way to stop growth with meds), and even shows her surgeries to explain the disease. What kind of surgery did you have? Leaders in the field say excision is the only way, not ablation. But Dr. Liu’s whole thing is that endo can be found ANYWHERE, which is why she uses a team of surgeons for other organs. She looks everywhere. In addition to it being in my cul de sac, it was on my bladder, bowel, ureter, and nerves impacting my hip. It took 6 months for the period pain to ease, but my hip pain went away and I can hold

I went to my OBGYN and she refused to give me a referral. These people don’t want you to get help; I have been laughed at, dismissed, and I was threatened to be put into induced menopause because I questioned her care for me. Frankly, I’ve been living a medical nightmare. What I did to find my specialist was i looked on here and asked people who their surgeons were. You don’t truly need a referral: you can ask to meet with an endo doctor any time as long as you reach out. I did have to pay outside of my insurance, and it was very pricey—— but I think I’m the end just having a doctor that beleived me made all the difference. I’m currently with the Pelvic Rehabilitation Medical Group. My doctor is Dr.Lora Liu and I can’t express how much she genuinely cares about me and my pain. Don’t wait for a doctor to sign a few papers to refer you; you know your pain best. Start googling endo specialists today. You got this and I’m proud of you for taking this next step. <3

Update Update!! A Diagnosis!!! My last post was very dismal, I wrote it in such a dark place. Thank you, thank you, thank you, to everyone who commented who were nothing but kind and caring and really listened to me. I just got off the phone with my surgeon, Dr.Lora Liu and she confirmed that out of the 17 biopsies she took…. 1 of them tested positive for endometriosis. I cried and cried; because I was so….. happy. I have a diagnosis after all this time. My endometriosis was on my right hypogastric ovarian section ….. which has been the origin of my pain. She says the endo was small but it was close to my nervous system and was traveling along it. She biopsied the whole area (ovary still in tact), and does not believe that it will regrow/return. I feel so validated. To know that I trusted my body and my body was right: I was in pain. I was suffering. And this wasn’t for nothing. Today has been one of the worst days for my surgery pain: this morning I laid in bed and just screamed because everything hurt so much—— and then like the fates knew I need answers, I got my call. I am so so so beyond thankful to Dr.Liu and her medical team. I finally know. And hopefully, it is finally over. I will always have to manage pain In general with this diagnosis, but the source of it has been removed from my body, and it is not expected to return. I was suggested to start pelvic floor therapy, which I am very interested in…. However I am in so much medical debt that I fear I won’t be able to afford it. So for now my focus is healing from my surgery which will take 4-6 weeks and we shall take it day by day. Finally; finally; vindication. I have endometriosis, and I’m going to be okay.

Hi! Yes!!! SO Dr.Liu has amazing bed side manner. She called me 3 times to check up on me in my recovery stage and the. Months later I had a question about a possible infection (it wasn’t infected, the whether just changed and my body got mad): and she remembered my mom and my partner by name and asked about them MONTHS after we haven’t spoken. She was thorough in all the questions I had and the actually surgery was great. As for my surgery she took 22 biopsies and. I received a full report on each and every one of them. To my knowledge she did excise all the endo she found: however I’m a special case. The endo I have is very small, almost microscopic as it had fused to my right ovarian nerve endings. I still feel pain but it is NOWHERE near what it used to be. I’d say my everyday pain is at 1-2 and it can shoot up to a 6 in terrible flair ups (usually right after I have sex); but before my surgery my average pain was a 6 and I’d shoot up to a 10. I couldn’t walk; I couldn’t even

I did! She was incredible during and after the procedure. She had great bedside manners which was a huge struggle with me for other doctors. She called me multiple times during my healing process to check up on me and that was awesome: AND I have 22 page report on all the details of my surgery. My one and only downside with her is her cost. Due to the fact that she works a lot in the discoveries of new science in endo insurance does not cover her at all. Meaning it is fully out of pocket. I’m in a payment plan of $375 a month and it’s really steep for me. It was a 10k surgery. My life has significantly improved since then, but the cost of that medical debt is gonna be around for a while.

Hi! Yes I made an update post about this. They DID find endo and I was diagnosed! My surgery was participated with learning doctors as well as Dr.Lui and I think one of the newer doctors told me they initially didn’t find anything right after surgery, which was terrible. Dr.Lui called me about 14-16 days afterwards and went over all the results with me and she did confirm that I do have e do, and was unsure why I was told otherwise. I highly reccomend her BUT do note that her office does not accept any insurance at all. I’ll be paying this surgery off longer than my student loans. I just had excision surgery with Dr Lora Liu and her team in New Jersey 11 days ago. I flew from Iowa because we have no one that know diddly about endo here. The Dr then said I was stage one and told me a bunch of shit afterward that I called her out on not being true. Welllllll Dr Liu just cleaned me out! I live in Iowa and we have nobody here that can help at all. And after lots of research, I actually went out to New Jersey to see Dr. Liu. I gave her my past history with my doctor doing a hysterectomy on me and finding endometriosis in 2020 and all of my stuff I’ve done with a G.I. for my bowel issues. It’s been never ending with the possibility that I have Crohn’s, but not actually finding any but having bowel inflammation and not knowing why. So we flew out and did surgery on July 15. She has a team that works with her. And I ended up having bowel endometriosis. I ended up being stage four even though my gynecologist only told me I was stage one and I had surgery in October last year and she told me there was nothing wrong with my bowels. I had to have part of my rectum shaved down because of the bowel endometriosis. So if I was going to give any advice on the fact, I would reach out to her. Because her and her team have been a godsend to me.

Had endo excused from my bladder, pelvic side walls, outside uterus and outside rectum. She keeps saying go to a pain management Dr. what happened to you? I’m in excruciating pain after surgery. Dr. Larish was the urologist.

Endometriosis Surgery with Dr. Lora Liu I had a laparoscopy the beginning of May 2024 and Dr. Lora Liu was my endometriosis surgery at Jersey City Medical Center. I had endo on my pelvic sidewalls, outside my rectum and outside my uterus and infiltrating endometriosis on my bladder and bladder muscle. I’ve been in excruciating pain since my surgery. I have nerve pain in my vagina, rectum, bladder and constant bladder pressure and frequency. I didn’t have this level of pain prior to Surgery. I have digestive issues, fatigue, nausea and can’t sleep and extreme anxiety from my surgery. I’ve spoken to her multiple times on the phone but she keeps referring me to pain management and a pelvic specialist who is out of network. I’ve been to multiple doctors since my surgery, pelvic specialists, urologists, my pain management Dr did an epidural caudal injection which only helped a little for 2 days. The urologist who I just saw said she did your surgery and should be seeing you to try to figure out what’s causing your pain. Has anyone had surgery with her and had this experience? Do you have post op pain from your surgery? What have you done? I’ve been going to pelvic floor pt and nothing helps. I’m taking different meds and nothing is helping.

Does skill of your surgeon influence your recovery time? I’m having my surgery with Dr. Lora Liu in NYC and I’m starting to get anxiety about the recovery process and pain management. It’s more of anxiety about the unknown of how extensive it will be and how I’ll feel after surgery. I know she’s very skilled and an expect in this field. She suspects I’m at least at stage 3 given my endometriomas. I know skill of the surgeon influences reoccurrence and long term relief, however, does that also include recovery time? I’m mostly trying to ease my anxiety around surgery as the date gets closer.

I am also in upstate NY and there’s not many specialists up here. I’m getting my excision with Dr. Liu in NYC but she is out of network with insurance, so it’ll definitely be a bit pricey. Most specialists are but she had no issue moving forward with surgery for me.

I had my surgery with Dr. Liu actually on October 3rd so about 5 weeks ago! To answer some of your questions: Healthcare in America is pretty complicated overall. I’m not sure if she gave you a cost breakdown, but I know her services can be expensive. So I would just prepare for that, but her office is flexible with payment plans. She doesn’t typically prescribe opioids or stronger pain medication unless you needed it. You can call her and she’ll put a prescription in, but opioids can make you nauseous and constipated and you really want to avoid getting constipated after surgery. Follow her post pain management medication schedule and I found that to be enough on its own. However, she won’t leave you in pain so you don’t have to worry about that! She was amazing and called me everyday post recovery. She’s worth every penny you’ll spend! I had stage 4 with multiple organ involvement and she removed all the Endo (26 lesions)! She’s very thorough. I’m not 100% yet health wise because

Oh yes she has you alternate ibuprofen and Tylenol on a strict 3 hour time frame and that was very helpful in getting ahead of the pain! I had to set alarms at night to take the meds, which was worth it because i had more pain from my endo each month then I did from surgery. She also had me take some medication prior to the surgery in the hospital to help with recovery.

I looked at all the endo specialist doctors in Ontario and because the wait times were so ridiculous I ended up getting a surgery date with Dr Lora Liu in the states!

Of course! (All of this is in CAD) So in terms of medical costs, it was about $25000, which included hospital fees and Dr. Liu’s fees. On top of the medical costs, I stayed in New Jersey at an AirBNB for 8 days total which cost about $3000 (I had my parents staying with me so we rented a pretty big house). We spent between $400-$500 on food. We also rented a car and did a road trip there and back instead of flying. I would say the total was close to $30000. I am honestly extremely lucky to have family that was able to afford this for me, without them I would never have been able to get this surgery. Dr. Lora Liu is amazing, she was so attentive. The hospital I was at was incredible (literally looked like a Greys Anatomy set), the entire medical team there was so amazing, kind, and obviously passionate about patient care. It was truly an eye opening experience seeing the difference in healthcare compared to here in Canada. My endo symptoms are well under control now and I feel 100x be

I believe that my 20 mins was a little more than 20… but even with 20 she was able to tell I needed surgery. They do a proper pre-op as well if you decide to go with them so the 20 mins consult is not the only time you’ll get to explain your case!

I can tell you right now I have no regrets going with Dr Liu. She and her team are amazing, the hospital staff at Jersey City was amazing as well. It was an all around great experience. I had phone calls from dr Liu every day for at least 6 days after surgery to check in on me and see how my recovery was going.

This was my second surgery. I had stage 3 endo on my first surgery that wasn’t performed by a endo specialist. My first surgery recover was absolutely horrible. I had a deep nodule on my rectum, endo on my ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic wall, ureters, and ureterosacral ligaments and more I just can’t remember! The second surgery with Dr Liu I had endo removed from my ureterosacral, rectum, and diaphragm. I guarantee that was all missed the first surgery. I also had a bunch of scar tissue/adhesions removed during the second surgery, as well as an appendectomy. (Dr Liu almost always removes the appendix in her endo cases). Dr Liu works with a team of specialists as well, I had a urologist in on my surgery because of my bladder symptoms, so I had bladder Botox. She often has bowel specialist as well if the need for resection is suspected. My recovery from the second surgery was significantly easier and less painful, but I believe that’s partly because I was given a proper pain managem

I had surgery with her and regret it 10000%. You're welcomed to DM. I've already stopped several women from booking their surgery with her.

Be SO grateful you didn't go to Lora Liu. She's the worst and I regret having chosen her as my surgeon. I'm dealing with complications that are 100% her fault, her negligence... and she doesn't care.

I had surgery with Dr Liu and I will one day take a billboard out in Times Square to warn women of her negligence. Avoid her at all costs! She will abandon you after 2 weeks post op + she likes to strip her patients (look it up and realize this causes more scar tissue and adhesions long term... it's a lazy, uneducated, unskilled, unethical technique that should be criminal).

Yes! Please do! But everyone should know that my experience with her is something my body will never recover from - my future fertility is negativity affected, and she abandoned me entirely after surgery despite pain so intense I couldn't walk or work - for 10 months! She is a GYN - she has no speciality degree from a med school. She is not formally trained in minimally invasive surgery. She doesn't know how to save vital organs for reproduction. She removes organs without cause or patient consent. And then again she disappears after surgery - you are an experiment to Dr Liu. A animal in her experimental OR.

Positive experience- Dr. Lora Liu Just wanted to share that I recently had a wonderful experience with Dr. Liu in NY. Her and her team were so incredibly kind and patient, they answered all my questions, the hospital staff at Jersey City Medical Center was amazing as well. My lap went great. Below is what they found - - DIE in pouch of Douglas - rectum and vagina fused together by 3cm mass - posterior vaginal wall endo - deep endo on right pelvic wall - deep endo on left pelvic wall - rectovaginal DIE - endo on ureters (bilateral ureterolysis) - colon was tethered to pelvic wall - right ovary was tethered to back of uterus - severe scar tissue on bladder - scar tissue on lower uterus - deep fibrosis from years of chronic inflammation - narrowed and scarred cervical canal She did a bilateral and posterior peritonectomy, hysteroscopy and a D&C to clear out my uterine cavity (I’m undergoing IVF). Overall it was SO worth it as you can imagine I was in a world of pain and IVF kept failing. I’ve been complaining about symptoms for probably over 10 years now (as confirmed by the deep fibrosis) and my OBGYN never took me seriously. Unfortunately it took me pushing my RE for a biopsy to get any answers. If you were contemplating going with her, DO IT!

Hey so you replied to my comment so I got a notification but I’m not the OP. If you want info from them, you should comment directly to their post. But I can tell you that I had an excellent intro call with Dr Liu and if I do plan to do surgery I will go with her. I was amazed at the personal connection she makes and her admin person is awesome and super responsive and personal. I’ve consulted with other nyc doctors who take insurance and they had such crazy busy schedules they could never fit me in and it was super hard to get a hold of anyone in the office. The visits were rushed as well. I had surgery in the past with a Dr who takes insurance and she was great overall but didn’t remove all my endo. Dr Liu actually showed me where in that surgical report it describes certain spots that were not removed. I believe it’s fairly well known that excision specialists like her who are private/out of network are able to spend more time in surgery because they don’t worry about reimbursem
