Patient 5 Had Surgery Positive 9 posts

“Patient had stage 3 endo with over 100 endometrial implants, 25 fibroids, and 5 cysts fully excised in one surgery. Surgeon has 25-30+ years experience and ~9,000 surgeries. Return rate of ~4% for stage 3. Patient praises his bedside manner, expertise, patience, and willingness to listen. Patient travels annually for follow-up. Strongly recommends against robotic/ablation surgery, advocates for hand excision. Patient is now recovering after 15+ years of suffering. He opened my eyes to how danger”

Dr Kanayama - he keeps a super active instagram with tons of helpful info on his method, outcomes, and patient cases. Couldn’t recommend him more highly - he opened my eyes to how dangerous most decisions are. If a doctor is using a machine and operating from another room… run. They’re burning your tissue and creating scar tissue. You’ll need multiple surgeries more than likely and each with worse pain than the last. His return rate is less than 5% when the stage is below a 3 if memory serves

Oh he’s marvelous !! Can’t say enough good things about him. I traveled from out of state to see him because of his method, success rate, and bedside manner. He’s quirky in a very endearing way but most importantly an expert in what he does. He has been doing this for over 25 years. When we were going through my photos yesterday post surgery, I realized how must skill it takes to be able to identify every form of endo in the body and remove it, which is quite incredible when they say there are 65 different phenotypes of endo. I had stage 3 endo, and my chance of it returning is 4%. If you have any questions related to dr kanayama I’m happy to answer !

I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through what you have. I’m not sure where you’re located but check out dr kanayama and his website/Instagram. The surgeon matters SO much when it comes to your outcome. I’ve had to fight my journey too to finally get a diagnosis and be heard in a world that isn’t built yet for this diseases eradication. But dr kanayama didn’t question me for a second - he fully excised my endometriosis (over 100 endometriomas, 25 fibroids, and 5 cysts) in one go. Your surgeon needs to get it all out and it can’t be with any burning tools - that’ll create the potential for scar tissue to form and potentially leave endo behind where it’s hidden. I wish you all the success in your journey!!! We all deserve a break 🤍

Hysterectomy will NOT stop your endo from spreading. Please check out @newyorkendometriosis and if you’re close to New York… Dr kanayama. He did my surgery and so many others (I think he said around 9,000 at this stage in his career focusing on endo excision) and has an incredibly high success rate in even the most complex cases. (His rate of return is also super low - he gets everything out, and I had over 100 endometrial implants, 25 fibroids and 5 cysts … I’m now on the mend after being tortured for 15+ years with the insanity you’re describing now that’s totally normal given the agony and pain endo causes) Were your previous surgeries with a robot or by hand?

Cannot say enough good things about Dr kanayama in nyc. People fly from all over the world to see him for good reason. He’s done over 9,000 some odd surgeries over 30 years and is an absolute gem. Very patient, knowledgeable, and his return rates are incredibly low (I was stage 3 and based on his outcomes, I have roughly a 4% chance of returning for a second lap)

Just found an “Expert Panel on Endo “ and wanted to share Just found an “Expert Panel on Endo “ and wanted to share In case you’re like me and always looking for more information on endometriosis. Panel includes Dr Kanayama who was my surgeon, and I can’t say enough good things about him. Also joining is Katie Edmonds, the author of the book many of us have touted in forums, “Heal Endo” and the other 3 joining look legit 😂 (Not sponsored just wanted to share because I’m legit excited for this one)

Lovedddde my surgeon. He took so much time to hear me, educate me, and never rushed me or even thought about gaslighting me. He understands what we deal with as women in the healthcare system. Surgeon was Dr kanayama in NYC. I still take the trip to see him annually for my checkup because I’ve never trusted a doctor the way I trust him. Good doctors are so hard to find

“Poster strongly advocates against DaVinci/laparoscopic robotic surgery; Dr. K uses open surgery and tactile feel to find endo. Dr. Kanayama is facing extradition to Japan (political/legal issue unrelated to medical practice). Sister had stage 4 endo since age 15, over a dozen prior failed surgeries before Dr. K. He quite literally saved her life. He's kept the endo at bay for the last 29 years.”

I am just seeing this post but wanted to let you know Dr. Kanayama is the real deal. My sister found him on her own when she was 16, had multiple surgeries for endo where they basically had no idea what they were doing and would close her back up. I can’t tell you how many night my parents spent in the er with her because of agonizing pain that was misdiagnosed for years. She found Dr K and my parents took a loan out of desperation since insurance wouldn’t cover (they eventually did reimburse). He quite literally saved her life. She’s only needed one additional surgery with him. He’s kept the endo at bay for the last 29 years. He also saved her fertility. She’s had 2 beautiful babies naturally and is pregnant with her third. I wish he was in network with insurance so more women had access to him, but if you can afford it or have out of network coverage I highly recommend. I see him for my endo but have yet to do surgery. As a note, my sister has not followed the endo diet etc which is not advised but that’s just to say that even without doing that she has had success. There’s a reason too that he believes in not doing laparoscopic. I forget exactly. But just important to note if you can’t afford to see him. Feel free to dm me.

So happy you posted this! Dr K quite literally saved my sisters life. Very similar story to yours. Multiple doctors opened my sister up several times and basically just closed back up. Nicked her uterus. Etc. she was a mess. She found him nearly 20 years ago and was in such bad condition my parents took a loan out to pay for the surgery w Dr K and basically gambled on insurance reimbursing, which they eventually did. I don’t have out of network insurance and joined Nancy’s nook recently to see if I could find a Doctor like Dr Kanayama on there who doesn’t do DaVinci. I see Dr K for my annuals but it’s just the surgery fee that I can’t afford right now. I know first hand from him not to see a surgeon with does DaVinci and first red flag for me was seeing that all the doctors on Nancy’s nook use it. I would love to know if you got your surgery covered by insurance? I have a platinum plan through Excellus but it’s private and like I said, no out of network coverage. As a note, Dr K saved my sisters fertility when most doctors were advising a full hysterectomy at 18. She has now had 2 beautiful children without any fertility intervention!

I am honestly not sure. She has out of network coverage. I do not and have been told by my insurance that it won’t be covered at all since I have no out of network coverage. I know my sister has to fight and appeal several times around when she first has surgery with Dr. Kanayama. I’m sure it helped though her records showed she had 6 previous surgeries with doctors in her network and all failed to remove the endo. Now, she never has a problem getting approval.
r/r/endometriosis Mar 2, 2026 +1 pts
My sister and I both had surgery with him and he quite literally saved our lives. My sister has dealt with stage 4 severe endo since age 15. She’s had over a dozen surgeries before being told my “experts” there was nothing they could do except a hysterectomy…on a 17 year old! Hysterectomy and pain killers was going to be her life. Btw, hysterectomies don’t always get rid of endo. In a last ditch effort she found Dr Kanayama and he saved her. Removed all the endo, preserved her fertility and she’s gone on pain free for the last 15 years and was naturally able to conceive 2 beautiful healthy children thanks to Dr. Kanayama. Just because everyone does DaVinci doesn’t mean it’s right or safe. I had davinci twice and it did nothing. I was cut up and in worse pain than before. Dr Kanayama was able to remove all my endo and I’ve had zero flare ups in 8 years. He also can diagnose it on ultrasound, something no other doctor does. They tell you the only way to get a confirmed diagnosis is through surgery…that’s BS and a way to make $$ off you by treating you like a lab rat to cut you open and diagnose. When my sisters endo started people hadn’t even heard of it. Every OB claimed they could remove it even though they weren’t trained it in let alone experts. Dr Kanayama isn’t an OB. He is a surgeon trained in no; that’s all he does. When I have surgery I want someone who performs that surgery all day, every day. I am not going to have a tumor remove by a general surgeon…I want the best in that specific area. That’s the way endo should be treated too, and I don’t know why women don’t understand that or demand that endo should be treated like cancer, taking over your life and killing your reproductive organs. Dr K advises against DaVinci because to get it all you have to be able to feel it. Something other doctors don’t do. Also, posting re his extradition implies he did something wrong or is being extradited for being a bad doctor. This is false and incredibly damaging. He is being politically persecuted and extradited for putting a thumb print of oil on a temple in Japan to bless it. It caused no damage. He faces 5 years in a labor camp in Japan despite no damage being caused, not being from there and not speaking the language. Additionally there have been other instances in Japan of foreigners INTENTIONALLY desecrating temples, like a Canadian who carved his name into a temple and was never prosecuted. Ask yourself why the Japanese govt is coming after Dr K so hard and the US court system has done nothing to stop his extradition. Every endo warrior should be appalled. Our biggest advocate, a man who quite literally gave his entire life to endo patients has lost all appeal, is being extradited any day now, has his own medical issues that will be ignored and will likely died in a Japanese work camp for a blot of oil that came right off. Every endo warrior should be thanking him and fighting for his life just as he has ours. I’m sorry his office doesn’t run in the “traditional” way and that you didn’t have the outcome thousands of his patients do and continue to, but to say he is scaring people or his methods are BS is unfair and hundreds of women will agree. He doesn’t appear on Nancy’s Nook because he is not traditional and does not do Davinci like everyone else. Search on Reddit Nancy’s nook and you will see it’s incredibly biased and not the holy grail anyone should be relying on. There are doctors on Nancy’s NooK who are literally chop shops

He is an incredible doctor. She my story above. If this patient did indeed have surgery with him, she is one of thousands and truly the only one I’ve heard of with a bad outcome. Compare that to any other doctor and see how many outcomes they’ve had. Dr Kanayama is one in a million and it is devastating that endo warriors will no longer have him in their corner. My family has been in tears for days just sick to our stomach and stressed that he won’t be around if we ever have a flare up, or if our younger female friends and relatives develop endo.

In my opinion- which is based on literally 20+ years of suffering with these diseases, many many hours of research, and consultations with several of the best experts in the US- I think virtually everyone with endo will need surgery. It’s a nasty, destructive, evil disease. Endo can be literally microscopic and often presents as flat lesions. Advanced disease looks like cigarette burns. But these types of lesions aren’t able to be seen on imaging. If it grows into larger masses then it can be seen. But that’s why surgery with a specialist who knows all the different presentations. It can be black, blue, red, white or even clear! It can grow into masses that damage or even kill the organs it grows on. Unfortunately right now the best way to evaluate the extent of the disease and treat it is surgery. I know the system is different in the UK, but I know there are true endometriosis specialist surgeons there. I think most of them are private and don’t take the NHS. There are several US surgeons that are active on social media posting information about the disease. They post videos showing their surgeries and what they do. Check out Dr Andrea Vidali, Dr Masahide Kanayama, and Dr Lora Liu. I would assume that she’s going to need surgery in the near future. If you can afford to go with a private surgeon, then definitely make an appointment for a consultation. I’m sure other people in this group can help recommend specialists in the UK!

I’d also highly recommend Dr Masahide Kanayama, Dr Lora Liu and Dr Andrea Vidali. These docs are all out of network though and charge a separate cash fee. I had a consult with Dr Kanayama in 2018 and he quoted me $15k to operate on me. I would have done it if I had the money but I just didn’t at the time. Unfortunately the only things that really helped me are not good long term solutions. I used to burn myself with my hearing pad and take the hottest baths I could possibly tolerate. And of course opioid pain meds helped pretty significantly. But I hadn’t met my pain management doctor yet and never had access to consistent meds, just an occasional rx from sympathetic ER docs. I guarded those with my life and argued with myself about taking one every time because I was always worried that the pain wasn’t bad enough to warrant taking one of my precious and few meds that actually worked. Some people have found relief with the uterine ablation or a pre sacral neurectomy. I had a PSN in one of my surgeries and it never worked. Dr Andrea Vidali in NYC is using a new technique of using microwave technology to treat adenomyosis. And there are some surgeons in the US that are skilled enough to excise the adenomyosis from the uterus. Dr Masahide Kanayama does it here in NYC, but he charges a fortune. I had a consultation with him in 2018 and he did a 3D ultrasound, which finally confirmed that I had adeno. I’d been suffering for years with suspected adeno but he was finally able to see it. He quoted me $15k to operate on me but my family had already spent upwards of $25k on surgeries in Atlanta at the CEC and with Dr Tamer Seckin here in NYC. We just could not afford another $15k. Ultimately, the pain was so severe that it was making me suicidal and I had to be hospitalized. After finally getting the adeno diagnosis confirmed, I knew that I had to have a hysterectomy. I had done everything possible to preserve my fertility, but in the end this fucking monster of a disease won. I know this is a sad ending to a terrible story, but it’s what happened to me. I hope your outcome is better.

There’s no test for endometriosis you went to a dumb Dr. you can get an MRI and that might show endo. Mine showed once my endo reached stage IV. If you have $600-1100 to spare I would consult the big time surgeons like Dr Kanayama or Dr (the surgeon that Bindi Birwin(?) used  I went with Dr K and he reviewed my MRI images one by one all 100 images and found all the Endo that the MRI report missed and downplayed. My gyno relied heavily on the report and when I asked her to review the images she said it wasn’t necessary. Thank god I didn’t have her do my excision surgery

Hi, do not go to him. Would not recommend at all. I was diagnosed with endo 10 years ago and had numerous check ups with him and could never afford the surgery. Please do yourself a huge favor and make an appointment with Dr. Shakiba in Hackensack, NJ. I just had my endo lap with him, he has a special arrangement with insurance and will not have to pay an outlandish amount like for Kanayama, believe me it's extremely affordable and he is an excellent doctor, even better than Dr. K

I would not recommend this doctor at all. I had a handful of appointments with him for my endo and each and every time he would instill the fear of god in me if I didn’t schedule the surgery ASAP. I was 17 at the time, his office does not take insurance, and they were unwilling to work out a payment plan. They required tens of thousands of dollars as a deposit before the surgery which my parents could not afford, not to mention he made them feel bad about it saying they need to figure out how to get him the money or else I’m going to keep suffering. Very inappropriate. Separately, I had another instance where I saw him for 3 times before he could properly diagnose I had an STI (which was a result of assault). He accused me of being promiscuous and said “who is this guy did you even know him??” I was 21 at the time and already distraught at what happened to me let alone having to be made to feel worse by this doctor was the last straw. Back to the endo, there are many other better doctors out there. I had my endo surgery with Dr. Shakiba in NJ and LOVE him, he is kind, respectful, and is far more knowledgeable. And he will absolutely work with your insurance for the surgery, all I had to pay was a minimal doctors fee of about $1k and didn’t have to shell out tens of thousands of dollars I didn’t have to Kanayama I am pain and symptom free since my surgery so just know there is hope out there with the right doctor. Best of luck 🙏🏼

I had seen Kanayama for a while. I had a few endo consults with him where they quoted me outrageous prices. I never thought I was going to be able to afford endo surgery ever, and it was such a hard time for me. My endo pain was excruciating, I would often vomit and/or faint and wouldn’t be able to get up and walk for days. I didn’t feel like his office cared, they just wanted the money. There was also a brief moment where I was going to him for regular gyno needs - I was having an issue down there and he berated me for having it. He completely humiliated me and questioned how or WHO could give me said issue. I don’t want to go into too much detail but it was the most inappropriate and disgusting encounter I have ever had with a doctor. Since then, I stopped going to him and found the wonderful Dr. Shakiba. He did my endo surgery in 2020 (I had stage 4). He was able to work something out with my insurance which he does for all his patients which was such a huge relief. Money aside, i could tell he really cared about me during my consult. What I also loved about him was that he’s a pelvic reconstructive surgeon. In my case, my endo was so severe he had to essentially “move” things back to where they are supposed to be, and he was skilled enough to do it. I was able to walk ok after surgery and recovery was about a week. Now 4 years later I have no pain, and I feel great. I am so thankful for him and he truly saved me. I thought I would never get the surgery and he was able to do it. Sorry for the long post - in short I absolutely recommend Shakiba. Stay away from Kanayama - I am not his first bad reviewer.

I wish you the best of luck in your recovery ❤️

“Patient did not see Kanayama but interacted via DM. Disliked his demeanor. He claimed robotic excision still uses ablation and criticized Dr. Liu's technique; patient found this dismissive and untrustworthy. Patient preferred hands-on (non-robotic) approach he claimed to use. I hated the way kanayama responded to my dm I hate kanayamas demeanor”

Honestly there was no post that inspired the question. I hated the way kanayama responded to my dm and kept saying a robot even with excision is using ablation and I’ve just been annoyed since. I am tired of endo and having no real solution to it sigh. But yeah I hate kanayamas demeanor but apparently he uses his “hands” for excision. And I LOVE dr. Liu’s demeanor but she uses robot and apparently it can use ablation.

That’s what I’m saying. Dr. Liu keeps telling me she’s using the robot but no ablation involved it is excision. But then kanayama is saying it’s a lie, that robot still uses ablation. And that’s why I don’t trust him? Like idk

Interesting! Thank you so much for your comment! I knew it! Because I saw Dr. Liu using scissors on her robot in her videos she posted. I knew kanayama was just being weird.

“Patient DMed Kanayama and disliked his demeanor and response. He claimed robotic surgery always uses ablation, which patient disputed. Patient chose not to pursue him. Uses hands (non-robotic) for excision. No actual appointment or surgery described.”
